    Abstract:

    AIM:To study and assess the effects of cataract surgery in patients with cataract and age-related macular degeneration(AMD).METHODS:Thirty-seven eyes of 31 patients with cataract and AMD who received the phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation were followed up for 3-6 months.RESULTS:All patients had improvement in visual acuity:2 eyes(5%) got counting fingers,11 eyes(30%) got 0.01-0.08,12 eyes(32%) got 0.1-0.2,8 eyes(22%) got 0.3,4 eyes(11%) got 0.4-0.5.1 eye(3%) had wet AMD which macular degeneration got worse.CONCLUSION:In patients with cataract and AMD,cataract surgery is necessary for the improvement of life quality when the visual acuity is affected by cataract.
