International Eye Science (IES) is an international ophthalmic academic journal with both Chinese and English articles, under the guidance and support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), and sponsored by Chinese Medical Association Xi’an Branch. China standard serial numbers are ISSN 1672-5123 and CN 61-1419/R. Founded in 2000, the journal is published monthly at present.

IES is currently a Chinese Core Journal of Science and Technology, Chinese Core Journal for Medicine and Health, Chinese Applied Oriented Core Journal, Q1 zone journal in Chinese academic journals, and Shaanxi Provincial High-Quality Science and Technology Journal. It is indexed by multiple authoritative domestic and international retrieval systems including WJCI, Scopus, Embase, JST, UPD, CA, IC, and WPRIM. The journal has been honored as a Shaanxi Provincial Excellent Science and Technology Journal and Shaanxi Provincial Excellent University Journal. According to the Chinese S&T Journal Citation Reports issued by the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC), the journal’s comprehensive evaluation score has ranked among the top three national core journals for consecutive years. It leads all domestic ophthalmic journals in total citation frequency, number of published articles, and proportion of overseas-authored papers for many years, and has become a renowned ophthalmic journal worldwide. The journal targets ophthalmologists at all levels and graduate students, and welcomes basic and clinical papers related to ophthalmology, as well as relevant and interdisciplinary fields.

IES does not accept translations, abstracts or case reports. Manuscripts involving academic misconduct will be rejected. We take strict measures against academic misconduct including plagiarism, and multiple submissions of the same manuscript.

1. Main Columns: Expert Commentary, Articles in English, Experimental Articles, Clinical Articles, Special Lectures, Meta-Analysis, Review, Bibliometric Analysis, Investigation, Educational Research, Clinical Research, Clinical Report, Blindness Prevention and Vision Rehabilitation.

2. Submission Requirements: Manuscripts should be scientific, innovative and practical, with clear arguments, reliable materials, concise text, and accurate data. Original articles and reviews are generally 6 000 words, while clinical research and clinical reports are around 5 000 words.

3. Featured Column: As an international journal, the “Articles in English” is a featured column. To facilitate international exchange, full-length English research papers are particularly welcome.

4. Title: As the general outline of a manuscript, the title should be accurate, appropriate, concise, searchable, and readable. Chinese titles should generally not exceed 20 Chinese characters, and English titles should contain no more than 10 content words. The terms used in the title should facilitate the selection of keywords and the compilation of secondary literature such as bibliographic entries and indexes, thereby providing specific and practical information for indexing purposes. Therefore, titles must include keywords reflecting the specific content of the paper and more keywords are preferable. Non-standard abbreviations and acronyms should be avoided in titles.

5. Abstract: All papers should be accompanied by abstracts and keywords in both Chinese and English. The Chinese abstract should be concise, while the English abstract should be relatively detailed. Both Chinese and English abstracts should be structured in four parts: Aim, Methods, Results, and Conclusion. For reviews and special reports, a non-structured abstract in both Chinese and English should be provided. The length of the abstract should preferably be within 300 words.

6. Keywords: Keywords are the markers for literature retrieval and the core terms reflecting the main content of manuscripts. They are selected from the title, abstract, and text of the manuscript, including MeSH terms, non-MeSH terms, and free terms, generally in the form of words or phrases. Each manuscript should list 3–8 keywords, among which MeSH terms should be included as many as possible.

7. Statistical Symbols: Statistical symbols should be written in accordance with GB/T 3358.1–3358.393: the mean is indicated by x? (median as M); the standard deviation is denoted by s (not SD); and the t-test, F-test, χ²-test, correlation coefficient r, degrees

8. References: References shall be accurate and comprehensive. Priority should be given to original literature published within the past five years. Among the references, at least 30 should be original articles or reviews. The proportion of references published within the last five years should exceed 50%. No more than 3 references are from the same journal, and no more than 3 references are from the same author. Outdated literature shall be avoided or kept to a minimum. References should be numbered sequentially in the order in which they appear in the text, indicated by Arabic numerals in square brackets. For each reference, the first three authors are listed; subsequent authors are abbreviated as et al. Authors should be listed in the order of surname first, followed by given name. Non-Chinese journal titles should be abbreviated according to the format used in Index Medicus. Each reference must be confirmed, including authors, article title, journal name, publication year, volume (issue): inclusive page numbers. References are arranged in order of citation at the end of the manuscript and numbered consecutively in the text. In addition, the DOI or the URL should be provided after each reference.

9. Online Submission: Authors should log in to IES website (https://www.ijo.cn) and submit manuscripts through the online submission and peer-review system, filling in the author information and other details as requested. IES don't charge any review fees. Authors will be notified of the acceptance decision approximately 3mo after submission, and the publication process (time to online publication) is around 6mo. Full-length English papers and those supported by any foundations will be given priority for rapid publication. For regular manuscripts requiring expedited review and priority publication, authors should state the requirements upon submission, and we will facilitate the process through the green channel where possible.
