Abstract:PANoptosis is a newly recognized form of inflammatory programmed cell death (PCD) that integrates key molecular features of pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis, rather than representing a simple combination of these pathways. It is characterized primarily by loss of plasma membrane integrity and the subsequent release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and damage-associated molecular patterns, thereby contributing to immune regulation and tissue injury. Previous studies have focused mainly on the roles of PANoptosis in cancer, infectious diseases, and inflammatory disorders, whereas its involvement in ocular diseases remains incompletely understood. This review summarizes the current evidence regarding PANoptosis in ocular diseases, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and keratitis, and may provide a basis for further investigation into its potential roles and underlying mechanisms.
