This review provides a brief summary of the main focus on the advantages and limitations of GWAS of myopia, with potential strategies that may contribute to further insight into the genetics of myopia in the post-GWAS or omics era.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Vision screening plays an important role in the early detection of children who have or probably are predisposed to have specific visual problems. The validity and reliability of the screening batteries in relation to the age group to be screened, and the person administering the test as well as the referral and follow-up criteria contribute to the overall outcome of the vision screening. Despite the long history of vision screening and significant improvement in the development of screening protocols, no agreement exists concerning the age at which children should be screened, the exact test batteries that should be included and who should conduct the screening. This review highlights some important aspects of the history of paediatric vision screening and available evidence in support of their use to detect visual conditions in children. It also examines some of the barriers against the development of paediatric vision screening models especially in low and medium income countries.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Cystoid macular edema (CME) is the abnormal collection of intraretinal fluid in the macular region, especially in the inner nuclear and outer plexiform layers. CME leads to severe visual impairment in patients with various retinal diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusion, choroidal neovascularization, and uveitis. Although various retinal conditions lead to CME, a shared pathogenesis of CME is involved in these diseases. Accordingly, the pathogenesis of CME based on vasogenic mechanisms is first discussed in this review, including vascular hyperpermeability, leukostasis, and inflammation. We then describe cytotoxic mechanisms based on retinal Müller cell dysfunction. This comprehensive review will provide an understanding of the pathogenesis of CME for potential therapeutic strategies.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Currently, thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) lacks effective treatment due to our lack of clarity in its immunopathogenesis. Orbital fibroblasts play a key role in altering inflammation and immune response in TAO, and are considered as the key target and effector cells in its pathogenesis. The orbit infiltrating CD34+ fibrocytes add on to the process by expressing high levels of autoantigens and inflammatory cytokines, while also differentiating into myofibroblasts or adipocytes. This review focuses on the role of orbital fibroblasts and CD34+ fibrocytes in the pathogenesis of TAO, highlighting the basis of emerging treatments.]]></description>

The purpose of this literature review is to summarize the available data on prevalence and causes of VI in school-age children from various regions globally. A discussion on the major findings highlighting the definition criteria, classifications and limitations for further studies is also presented.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Internal carotid artery dissection (ICAD) results from disruption of the intima of the arterial wall, and can lead to intrusion of blood into the arterial wall and form an intramural hematoma. The hematoma can compress the true lumen of the vessel, causing functional stenosis or occlusion. The classic triad signs of ICAD include pain in the ipsilateral neck, head and orbital regions; a (partial) Horner syndrome; and cerebral or retinal ischemia. However, not all ICAD patients present with this classic signs. In some cases, ocular manifestations are the initial (and sometimes the only) findings. We summarize the ocular manifestations associated with ICAD in 3 categories: visual symptoms, oculosympathetic palsy, and ocular motor nerve palsy.]]></description>

Retinopathy is caused by a gap between the neurosensory retina and the retinal pigment epithelium, which severely damages the visual function of the patient. Therefore, early clinical discovery, prevention and selection of an appropriate treatment are important. This article reviews progress in the treatment of retinal detachment.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To elucidate the association of treatment modality to vitreoretinal fibrosis and traction retinal detachment (TRD) in Coats’ disease.
METHODS: A PubMed search for Coats’ disease with included studies describing eyes with clinical features and treatment course of Coats’ disease. Binary logistic regression with fibrosis at presentation and treatment type as independent variables was performed to determine predictors of TRD historically (since 1921) and in the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) era (since 2007). Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) reported.
RESULTS: Of 175 articles described 1183 eyes. Vitreoretinal fibrosis increased from presentation (5.4%) to follow-up (15.5%) and TRD increased from 0.44% to 3.9% at follow up. Laser was protective against vitreoretinal fibrosis (OR 0.6, 95%CI 0.4-0.9) but TRD was borderline (OR 0.6, 95%CI 0.3-1.1). Cryotherapy showed a higher association with TRD (OR 1.9, 95%CI 1.0-3.7) than with vitreoretinal fibrosis (OR 0.8, 95%CI 0.5-1.2). Similarly, intravitreal anti-VEGF alone was not associated with fibrosis (OR 1.1, 95%CI 0.6-1.8) nor TRD (OR 1.1, 95%CI 0.5-2.6) but the combination of laser and anti-VEGF therapy was protective [Fibrosis: 0.1 (0.03, 0.35); TRD: 0.05 (0.01, 0.23)] compared to anti-VEGF plus cryotherapy (P<0.001). Disease stage ≤2B or ≥3A was not associated with TRD.
CONCLUSION: Vitreoretinal fibrosis and TRD increase after treatment in Coats’ disease. The combination of anti-VEGF agents and cryotherapy may lead to higher risk for TRD. Presence of pre-treatment fibrosis is the highest risk factor for post-treatment worsening of vitreoretinal fibrosis and TRD.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Donor cornea shortage is a primary hurdle in the development of corneal transplantation. Of all species, porcine corneas are the ideal transplantation material for humans. However, the xenoimmune rejection induced by porcine corneal xenotransplantation compromises surgical efficacy. Although the binding of IgM/IgG in human serum to a genetically modified porcine cornea is significantly weaker than that of the wild type (WT), genetically modified porcine corneas do not display a prolonged graft survival time in vivo. Conversely, costimulatory blockade drugs, such as anti-CD40 antibodies, can reduce the xenoimmune response and prolong graft survival time in animal experiments. Moreover, porcine endothelial grafts can survive for more than 6mo with only the subconjunctival injection of a steroid-based immunosuppressants regime; therefore, they show great value for treating corneal endothelial disease. In addition, zoonotic transmission is a primary concern of xenotransplantation. Porcine endogenous retrovirus (PERV) is the most significant virus assessed by ophthalmologists. PERV integrates into the porcine genome and infects human cells in vitro. Fortunately, no evidence from in vivo studies has yet shown that PERV can be transmitted to hosts.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[A systematic review of the recent literature regarding the current image-guided systems used for cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange was performed based on the PubMed and Google Scholar databases in March 2018. Literature review returned 21 eligible studies. These studies compared image-guided systems with other keratometric devices regarding their accuracy, repeatability and reproducibility in measurement of keratometric values, astigmatism magnitude and axis, as well as in IOL power calculation. Additionally, the image-guided systems were compared with conventional manual ink-marking techniques for the alignment of toric IOLs. In conclusion, image-guided systems seem to be an accurate and reliable technology with measurements of high repeatability and reproducibility regarding the keratometry and IOL power calculation, but not yet interchangeable with the current established and validated keratometric devices. However, they are superior over the conventional manual ink-marking techniques for toric IOL alignment.]]></description>

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Current glaucoma treatments only slow the progression of RGCs loss. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are capable of differentiating into all three germ layer cell lineages. iPSCs can be patient-specific, making iPSC-derived RGCs a promising candidate for cell replacement. In this review, we focus on discussing the detailed approaches used to differentiate iPSCs into RGCs.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Keratoconus and iatrogenic keratectasia are the corneal ectatic disorders occurring due to biomechanical weakening of the cornea resulting in distorted images, myopia, and irregular astigmatism. Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is performed to arrest keratoconus successfully. The main aim of this review is to discuss the safety and efficacy of the adjuvant therapies, such as the combination of CXL and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for the treatment of corneal ectatic disorders. A comprehensive literature search was performed using PubMed, MEDLINE, and Scopus using keywords ‘collagen’ ‘keratoconus’, ‘keratectasia’, ‘collagen cross-linking’, and ‘photorefractive keratectomy’. Search results were restricted to clinical studies published in English. Corneal CXL effectively arrests the progression of keratoconus by enhancing corneal rigidity. However, functional vision is not improved by cross-linking. Combining CXL to refractive surgeries such as topography-guided PRK or transepithelial PRK is found to be a safe and effective method in providing corneal stability as well as significantly improving functional visual acuity with few minor complications. This combined technique also prevents regression of keratoconus and reduce the risk of keratectasia. CXL combined with PRK is a promising therapeutic approach in ophthalmology that can be successfully used to treat progressive keratoconus and other corneal ectatic disorders and to enhance visual acuity.]]></description>

Diabetic keratopathy is the major complication of the cornea characterized by delayed corneal wound healing, decreasing corneal epithelial sensitivity, and recurrent corneal ulcers. There is accumulating evidence that diabetic keratopathy is correlated with the hyperglycemic state. Different corneal components may produce different alterations under hyperglycemia. In addition, diabetic nerve alteration may become a novel biomarker of early-stage DM. Abnormalities of the corneal nerve plexus have been associated with diabetic inflammatory states. There is rapidly growing evidence based on investigations of diabetic corneal nerves through in vivo confocal microscopy. Understanding the molecular pathogenesis caused by hyperglycemia may assist in the identification of novel biomarkers, as well as therapeutic targets for early treatment. This review mainly summarizes recent findings on corneal alteration and pathogenesis in DM.]]></description>

All of the original articles were assessed according to date of publications, countries, clinics and topics. Studies about ocular inflammatory diseases were evaluated according to their qualifications, review methods and results.
RESULTS: A total of 4473 publications, including original research articles and reviews were screened. The number of publications was shown a regular logarithmic increase over the years. The majority of studies were performed by clinics in Turkey and many of these publications were performed by oncology and cardiology clinics. A total of 75 publications were identified to be about ocular diseases.
CONCLUSION: Elevated NLR as a cheap, reproducible, and readily available marker could be used as a diagnostic and/or prognostic marker in ocular diseases.]]></description>

Ocular diseases, previously associated with a higher depression risk, also impose a substantial economic burden on affected families, thus early detection and/or accurate treatment in order to avoid and prevent blindness should be emphasized. Ocular neovascularization (NV), the leading cause of blindness in a variety of eye diseases, is a pathologic process characterized by the formation, proliferation and infiltration of anomalous, tiny and leaky fragile blood vessels within the eye. Genetics have been suspected to play an important role in the occurrence of eye diseases, with the detection of a numbers of specific gene mutations. Long non-coding RNA (lncRNAs) are novel class of regulatory molecules previously associated with various biological processes and diseases, however the nature of the relation and pathways by which they might contribute to the development of corneal, choroidal and retinal NV have not yet been completely elucidated. In this review, we focus on the regulation and characteristics of lncRNAs, summarize results from ocular NV-related studies and discuss the implication of lncRNAs in ocular NV development.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory disorder which is gradual in development; corneal thinning and ectatic protrusion characterizes it. Keratoconus prevalence varies between different regions depending on several factors that affecting its prevalence. There are risk factors for developing keratoconus such as demographic and environmental factors. It was suggested that eye rubbing was associated with the development of keratoconus. The main aim of this review was to summarize the literature data about keratoconus and to identify the role of eye-rubbing in the aetiology of the disease. A number of 24 articles was reviewed through the PubMed, Google Scholar and Research Gates. There are many keywords used such as keratoconus, aetiology of keratoconus, eye rubbing, keratoconus prevalence, keratoconus and eye rubbing correlation. We concluded that eye rubbing causes the thinning of keratocyte, and the degree of effect of eye rubbing depends on the period and force of performing eye rubbing. It is recommended to avoid eye rubbing to prevent keratoconus, this can be achieved by avoiding itching and treating dryness of the eye and avoiding wearing eye lenses.]]></description>

In turn, they are associated with a higher prevalence of dysphotopsia symptoms that is one of the most common causes of patient dissatisfaction. Neuroadaptation seems to play a major role in the optimal adaptation to multifocal IOLs. In this context, the development of strategies that facilitate the neuroadaptation process to multifocality might be an effective strategy to reduce patients’ dissatisfaction. Video games have been proved to be effective for the improvement of visual acuity and for the promotion of neuroplasticity in elderly subjects and other populations with cortical-related visual impairment. This narrative review highlights the physiological potential of video games as a perceptual strategy to improve visual acuity and promote neuroplasticity in patients using multifocal IOLs, although research is still needed to confirm these benefits in this specific population, with only one comparative study to this date providing evidence of them.]]></description>

This increased use can be attributed to negative or zero spherical aberrations with unique optical designs, which counteract some of the positive spherical aberrations of the cornea. These alterations reduce the total spherical aberration of human eyes and improve the visual acuity in patients with cataract postoperatively. At present, various types of aspheric IOLs are used worldwide. Although the implantation of aspheric IOL is beneficial to the patients who need correction of spherical aberrations, much controversy is still associated with ocular residual spherical aberrations that facilitate the best visual quality for patients postoperatively. In order to provide reference for future clinical work and scientific research, this report reviews the relationship between the ocular residual spherical aberration of human eyes and visual quality.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Artemisinin, also named qinghaosu, is a family of sesquiterpene trioxane lactone originally derived from the sweet wormwood plant (Artemisia annua), which is a traditional Chinese herb that has been universally used as anti-malarial agents for many years. Evidence has accumulated during the past few years which demonstrated the protective effects of artemisinin and its derivatives (artemisinins) in several other diseases beyond malaria, including cancers, autoimmune disorders, inflammatory diseases, viral and other parasite-related infections. Recently, this long-considered anti-malarial agent has been proved to possess anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic and anti-excitotoxic properties, which make it a potential treatment option for the ocular environment. In this review, we first described the overview of artemisinins, highlighting the activity of artemisinins to other diseases beyond malaria and the mechanisms of these actions. We then emphasized the main points of published results of using artemisinins in targeting ocular disorders, including uveitis, retinoblastoma, retinal neurodegenerative diseases and ocular neovascularization. To conclude, we believe that artemisinins could also be used as a promising therapeutic drug for ocular diseases, especially retinal vascular diseases in the near future.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[We reviewed the literature for different diagnostic approaches for dry eye disease (DED) including the most recent advances, contradictions and promising diagnostic tools and technique. We performed a broad literature search for articles discussing different methods for diagnosis of DED including assessment of tear osmolarity, tear film stability, ocular biomarkers and others. Articles indexed in PubMed and google scholar were included. With the growing cosmetic industry, environmental pollution, and booming of digital screens, DED is becoming more prevalent. Its multifactorial etiology renders the diagnosis challenging and invites the emergence of new diagnostic tools and tests. Diagnostic tools can be classified, based on the parameter they measure, into tear film osmolarity, functional visual acuity, tear volume, tear turnover, tear film stability, tear film composition, ocular biomarkers and others. Although numerous methods exist, the most accurate diagnosis can be reached through combining the results of more than one test. Many reported tests have shown potential as diagnostic/screening tools, however, require more research to prove their diagnostic power, alone or in combination. Future research should focus on identifying and measuring parameters that are the most specific to DED diagnosis.]]></description>

Ab interno canaloplasty (ABiC), which can reconstruct the natural outflow pathways of aqueous humor in mild-to-moderate primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients, is a new minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedure improving from traditional canaloplasty. Canaloplasty can reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) with high efficiency and security. There are no complications such as scar formation and encapsulation for this no-bleb canaloplasty.]]></description>

A bibliographic search focused on the study of the geometry of conjunctiva and/or sclera as well as those studies evaluating the relationship between geometric changes in the scleral-conjunctival structure and myopia was carried out. Several studies have been performed with different diagnostic technologies, including optical coherence tomography, profilometry and Scheimpflug imaging, to detect geometric changes of the scleral-conjunctival tissue in different physiological conditions of the eye, after use of contact lenses and in different ocular pathologies. Likewise, these technologies have been shown to be a valuable clinical tool to optimize scleral contact lens fitting. Future studies should investigate new potential clinical applications of such technologies, including the evaluation of anterior scleral changes related to myopia, as well as to define standardized clinical standard operating procedures for obtaining accurate and reproducible clinical measurement of the scleral-conjunctival morphology.]]></description>

However, there is an increasing body of evidence to suggest the use of these implants at an earlier stage in the surgical management of glaucoma. We describe the mechanics behind their function as well as the various implants available. The implants vary in size, surface area and composition and hence the surgical implantation of these devices are described in detail. The knowledge of such devices and their potential complications is fundamental for the successful management of patients who undergo aqueous-shunt surgery. Careful patient selection and optimal postoperative management is critical to the successful patient outcomes.]]></description>

The efficacy of wearing RGP contact lens has been confirmed to some extent, but some studies have found that wearing&#160;RGP contact lens has adverse effects, which may promote disease progression. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of RGP contact lens in controlling keratoconus were reviewed to provide more suggestions and references for the clinical application of RGP contact lens.]]></description>

In this condition, the neurofunctional disorder occurring during first years of life provoke several monocular and binocular anomalies such as crowding, deficits in the accommodative response, contrast sensitivity, and ocular motility abilities. The inhibition of the binocular function of the brain by the misaligned amblyopic eye induces a binocular imbalance leading to interocular suppression and the reduction or lack of stereoacuity. Passive treatments such as occlusion, optical and/or pharmacological penalization, and Bangerter foils has been demonstrated to be potentially useful treatments for strabismic amblyopia. Recent researches have proved new pharmacological options to improve and maintain visual acuity after occlusion treatment in strabismic amblyopia. Likewise, the active vision therapy, in the last years, is becoming a very relevant therapeutic option in combination with passive treatments, especially during and after monocular therapy, in the attempt of recovering the imbalanced binocular vision.]]></description>

The present approaches for diagnosis are morphological examination, imaging examination and immunological examination, regrettably, they lack of sensitivity and difficult to make a definite diagnosis in the early stage. Systemic biology as an effective method has been used in clinical diagnosis and treatment for diseases, especially metabolomics which is more attractive with high sensitivity and accuracy. Although previous researches had been confirmed that endogenous metabolites in the ocular matrix play a crucial role in the progress of diseases related diseases, the standard protocols and systematic summary about the biomarker researches based on ocular matrix has not been established. This review article highlights the pretreatment for ocular matrix and the new biomarkers expressed by the eye diseases, expected to promote the application of biomarkers in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.]]></description>

Redundancy, poor visual acuity and decreased life quality are bothering patients and ophthalmologists for decades. After vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was found to be a primary factor in promoting retinal angiogenesis, intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF drugs has been the first-line treatment. Whereas, some patients are refractory to this therapy and problems of economic burden, local complications and adverse effects promote researches into other possible targets. The vasohibin (VASH) family is a newly-investigated factor in modulating ocular angiogenesis. The family includes VASH1 and VASH2, which show opposite effects of inhibiting and accelerating angiogenesis respectively. Positive results have been reported in cellular and animal experiments. With further researches, it can be a promising future target of treating ocular neovascular diseases.]]></description>

Intraocular pressure (IOP) plays a key role in glaucoma development and progression. Schlemm’s canal (SC), an important structure of the anterior chamber angle, regulates the flow of aqueous humor and maintains IOP. Because of its special function of aqueous outflow, the SC has been intensive investigated recently. Several characteristics of SC in anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology have been revealed. Compare to normal, glaucomatous SC cells are more sensitive to substrate stiffness, have higher stiffness and and lower porosity leading to higher outflow resistance. And SC collapse caused by acute IOP increase is partially or totally reversal. With advanced inspection techniques, high-quality images of the SC can be obtained in vivo, which facilitates SC quantitative measurements clinically and allows us to investigate a new therapy paradigm for glaucoma. In this review, we summarize the basic and clinical research that focused on mechanisms of aqueous outflow resistance and SC changes in physiological, pathological, and post-treatment states.]]></description>

However, the improvements of MH closure rate and postoperative visual acuity are not satisfactory especially in large and refractory MHs. Currently, the ILM flap technique has gradually been applied for the treatment of MH and achieved high MH closure rate. The ILM flap technique has many variations, including the difference of the size, shape, number, and manner in which the flaps put on the MHs. The ILM flap technique also has some auxiliary means including perfluoro-n-octane (PFO), dye, autologous blood and adhesive viscoelastics. There is controversy about the effects between several technique variations of ILM flap, and it needs to be explored in the future.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Non-simulator-based examination methods of the fundal examination have shown to be cost-effective. We reviewed different non-simulator-based direct fundoscopy examination methods used in undergraduate curricula and their outcomes. PubMed (MEDLINE) and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched using standard Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms ophthalmoscopy, medical education, undergraduate medical education, medical student, educational assessment and learning. The search included publications until 28th February 2019. We obtained 34 articles after screening abstracts; of them, 12 articles were included in the qualitative synthesis. The studies were comprised of diverse teaching methods which included fundal photograph matching with corresponding eye, continuous education using community-based eye clinics, formal instructions and demonstrations prior to skills training, ophthalmoscopy skills practice using eye pathologies, teaching versus conventional ophthalmoscopy and group-based teaching. We concluded that non-simulator-based techniques such as use of fundal photograph matching of an eye of a volunteer, introduction to eye pathologies, smaller student groups and formal instructions with video demonstrations prior to skills training were highly effective in teaching direct ophthalmoscopy for undergraduate medical students.]]></description>

This review is to summarize the incidence, the pathogenesis, the risk factors, the prognosis and the prevention of corneal graft melting after keratoplasty. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science and WanFang database to retrieve potentially eligible articles about relevant clinical reports and animal experiments. We read the full texts to identify eligible articles. The selection of studies and data extraction were performed independently by two reviewers. In conclusion, the pathogenesis of corneal graft melting is complicated, and many risk factors are closely related to corneal graft melting. Analysis of pathogenesis and risk factors of corneal graft melting can facilitate the development of targeted therapies to better guide clinical practice.]]></description>

However, limitations exist when utilizing current methods. Recently, many studies have identified identify new RB biomarkers which can be used in diagnosis, as prognostic indicators and may contribute to understanding the pathogenesis of RB and help determine specific treatment strategies. This review focuses on recent advances in the discovery of RB biomarkers and discusses their clinical utility and challenges from areas such as epigenetics, proteomics and radiogenomics.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Scleritis and other autoimmune diseases are characterized by an imbalance in the levels of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory molecules with the balance tilted more towards the former due to the failure of recognition of self. The triggering of inflammatory process could be ascribed to the presence of cytoplasmic DNA/chromatin that leads to activation of cytosolic DNA-sensing cGAS-STING (cyclic GMP-AMP synthase linked to stimulator of interferon genes) pathway and enhanced expression of NF-κB that results in an increase in the production of pro-inflammatory bioactive lipids. Bioactive lipids gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), dihomo-GLA (DGLA), prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), prostacyclin (PGI2) and lipoxin A4, resolvins, protectins and maresins have anti-inflammatory actions, bind to DNA to render it non-antigenic and are decreased in autoimmune diseases. These results suggest that efforts designed to enhance the production of anti-inflammatory bioactive lipids may form a new approach to autoimmune diseases. Local injection or infusion of lipoxins, resolvins, protectins and maresins or their precursors such as arachidonic acid may be exploited in the prevention and management of autoimmune diseases including scleritis, uveitis and lupus/rheumatoid arthritis.]]></description>

However, extrapulmonary TB affects almost any tissues around the eye and orbit, and it then requires a high degree of suspicion to accurately diagnose. Diagnostic delays are common and may lead to morbidity. For ophthalmologists and infectious disease specialists, it is important to work together to accurately diagnose and treat ocular tuberculosis (OTB) to prevent vision loss. This review reports the latest advanced diagnostic methods for active TB and latent TB as well as various known manifestations of OTB. In fibrotic diseases, fibroblasts synthesize large amounts of extracellular matrix (ECM), leading to scarring and organ failure. Purine-rich box1 (PU.1) is a specific transcription factor of hematopoietic cell and belongs to the E26 transformation specificity (ETS) family. Recently, it was found that the transcription factor PU.1 is an important regulatory factor of the profibrotic gene expression program. TGF-β had been proved to play an important role in many ocular tissue fibrosis diseases, and up-regulated the expression of PU.1 in fibroblasts producing ECM in a Smad-3 dependent manner. We explore the effect of PU.1 on fibrosis of different ocular tissues from this perspective. This article reviews the role of PU.1 and its effects on fibrosis of ocular tissue and other tissues.]]></description>

Recent studies have found the aberrant epigenetics in TAO, including DNA methylation, non-coding RNAs, and histone modification. Many genes have an aberrant level of methylation in TAO. For example, higher levels are found in CD14, MBP, ANGLE1, LYAR and lower levels in DRD4 and BOLL. Non-coding RNAs are involved in the immune response (miR-146a, miR-155, miR-96, miR-183), fibrosis regulation (miR-146a, miR-21, miR-29), adipogenesis (miR-27) and are thought to play roles in TAO. MicroRNA is also related to the clinical activity score (miR-Let7d-5p) and may be a predictor of glucocorticoid therapy (miR-224-5p). The quantities of H4 in TAO are increased compared with euthyroid control subjects, and the role of histone modifications in Graves’ disease may lead to better understanding of its role in TAO. More studies are needed to explain the role of epigenetics in TAO and provide potential therapeutic strategies.]]></description>

The Keap1-Nrf2-ARE pathway is a classical pathway that resists oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. This pathway is also active in the development of age-related eye diseases. A variety of drugs have been shown to treat age-related eye diseases through the Keap1-Nrf2-ARE (Kelch-like ECH-Associating protein 1- nuclear factor erythroid 2 related factor 2-antioxidant response element) pathway. This review describes the role of oxidative stress in the development of age-related eye diseases, the function and regulation of the Keap1-Nrf2-ARE pathway, and the therapeutic effects of drugs associated with this pathway on age-related eye diseases.]]></description>

The accumulation of oxidized phospholipids in the outer layer of the retina plays a key role in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells death and the formation of choroidal neovascularization (CNV), which mean the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Recent studies have shown that MET can regulate lipid metabolism, inhibit inflammation, and prohibit retinal cell death and CNV formation due to various pathological factors. Here, newly discovered functions of MET that may be used for the prevention and treatment of AMD were reviewed.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Fungal keratitis (FK) is a refractory disease that poses a serious threat to vision, with common risk factors like eye trauma, contact lens wearing, topical corticosteroids and antibiotic abuse. Nowadays, topical and systemic anti-fungal drugs and ocular surgeries are still the main therapeutic modalities. However, the pathogenesis of FK, especially the immunologic mechanism within it, has not yet been deeply clarified. A better understanding of the pathogenesis of FK is imperative for more effective therapies and prognosis. Meanwhile, the immune protection strategies are also urgently required to manage FK. This review highlights recent advances in the immunologic mechanism in the pathogenesis of FK, in hope of providing valuable reference information for more effective anti-fungal treatment.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[To assess all available data to compare the efficacy of glucocorticoids treatment and orbital decompression for dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON). PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library databases as well as other sources were searched by two independent reviewers followed by extensive hand-searching for the identification of relevant studies. The primary outcomes were the improvement in visual acuity and responder rate. Secondary outcomes were the proptosis reduction, change in diplopia, and clinical activity score (CAS). One randomized controlled trial, three retrospective case series and one prospective case series met the inclusion criteria. They were divided into intravenous high-dose glucocorticoids (ivGC) group and orbital decompression (OD) group. Both groups demonstrated improvement in visual acuity. In addition, the proportion of patients with improved vision in OD group was higher than that in ivGC group (P<0.001). Post-treatment proptosis reduction was also reported in both groups. Overall, weighted mean in proptosis reduction estimated at 1.64 and 5.45 mm in patients treated with ivGC and OD respectively. This study also presented results regarding pre-existing and new-onset diplopia. Apart from diplopia, a wide variety of minor and major complications were noted in 5 included studies. The most common complication in ivGC group and OD group was Cushing’s syndrome and epistaxis respectively. The present systematic review shows that both glucocorticoids treatment and OD are effective in treating DON and OD may work better in improving visual acuity and reducing proptosis. However, high-quality, large-sample, controlled studies need to be performed in the future.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Lutein, a type of carotenoids, is found to delay the onset and progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Several lutein supplementation studies showed that after an initial increase, lutein serum levels demonstrated a subsequent decrease despite continuous supplementation. In this systematic literature review, this obscure phenomenon was tried to be explained. The subsequent drop in lutein levels was postulated due to down-regulation of lutein receptors scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI) in the gastrointestinal tract, upregulation of lutein degrading enzyme β-carotene dioxygenase (BCDO2), or perhaps a combination of both. Some single nucleotides polymorphisms (SNPs) that could have influence on the occurrence of this phenomenon. To date, an exact scientific explanation for this phenomenon has not been established. Further research is needed to investigate this phenomenon in depth to reach an irrefutable explanation, giving that lutein is proven to be effective in delaying the onset and progression of AMD and its metabolism in the human body becomes of equal importance.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Meibomian gland, the largest sebaceous gland of the body, is responsible for the biosynthesis of lipid layer of the tear film to prevent excessive evaporation. The loss of normal functions of meibomian gland, known as meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), is a chronic disease and is the leading cause of dry eye symptoms in the clinics. Studies have found sex hormones, especially androgen, play vital roles in the regulation of the functions of meibomian gland. Recently, androgen has also been preliminarily applied in clinics for the treatment of MGD and showed promising results, especially in people with endogenous androgen deficiency. This review summarized the mechanisms of the function of androgen on meibomian gland based on molecular, animal, and clinical studies, and proposed evidence-based views about its potential applications for the treatment of MGD.]]></description>

Timing of IOL implantation in infantile congenital cataract patients is not simply a point-in-time but a personalized decision that comprehensively takes age at surgery, risks of postoperative complications, and economic condition of family in consideration, and combines with choosing suitable IOL type and power. For infants with well-developed eyeballs and good systemic conditions, IOL implantation at six months of age or older is safe and effective. Otherwise, secondary IOL implantation may be a safer choice.]]></description>

The IOP reduction is due to a transitional hyposecretory phase of the aqueous humor, that increases gradually until 3mo after the venous occlusion onset, and then finally disappears after month 4th. The IOP increases lead to the ocular hypertension and glaucoma. The possible pathogenetic correlations between ocular hypertension/glaucoma and acute central/hemicentral RVOs have been classified into three groups: 1) the venous occlusion precedes the ocular hypertension/glaucoma causing neovascular glaucoma and secondary angle-closure glaucoma without rubeosis; 2) the ocular hypertension and the glaucoma precede the venous occlusion and favor its appearance (ocular hypertension, primary angle-closure, primary angle-closure glaucoma, and open angle glaucomas); and 3) the venous occlusion and the ocular hypertension/glaucoma are mostly age dependent appearances due to common vascular and collagen alterations, lacking a causal connection between the 2 conditions.]]></description>

There is an urgency to establish new therapeutic strategies that could prevent or delay the progression of AMD more efficiently. Until now, the pathogenesis of AMD has remained unclear, limiting the development of the novel therapy. Bruch’s membrane (BM) goes through remarkable changes in AMD, playing a significant role during the disease course. The main aim of this review is to present the crucial processes that occur at the level of BM, with special consideration of the lipid accumulation and protein modifications. Besides, some therapies targeted at these molecules and the construction of BM in tissue engineering of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells transplantation were listed. Hopefully, this review may provide a reference for researchers engaged in pathogenesis or management on AMD.]]></description>

Considering the aging population and concurrent rapid increase in the number of individuals with myopia, the risk of visual defects caused by highly myopic OAG is likely to increase dramatically over the next few decades. However, precise screening and diagnosis of OAG is challenging because of the tilt and rotation of the optic disc, as well as extensive β-zone parapapillary atrophy in highly myopic eyes. Recent advances in optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) technologies imply that both modalities are promising tools for the detection of highly myopic OAG. Notably, the diagnosis of OAG remains to be determined with the longitudinal changes of functional damages (e.g. visual field defect, visual electrophysiological changes). We herein describe some aspects of microvascular and microstructural pathology in patients with highly myopic OAG and proposes a framework for the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.]]></description>

The prevalence of DES in patients with GO is significantly higher than normal subjects. The ocular surface changes involving changes in tears, cornea, conjunctiva and glands occur in GO patients. However, the mechanism of how DES occurs in GO still remains unclear. In this review, the ocular surface changes were illustrated and analyzed the reasons for high prevalence of DES in GO patients.]]></description>

CS-MSCs are stem cells with self-renewal and multidirectional differentiation potential. A large amount of data confirmed that CS-MSCs can be induced to differentiate into functional keratocytes in vitro, which is the motive force for maintaining corneal transparency and producing a normal corneal stroma. CS-MSCs are also an important component of the limbal microenvironment. Furthermore, they are of great significance in the reconstruction of ocular surface tissue and tissue engineering for active biocornea construction. In this paper, the localization and biological characteristics of CS-MSCs, the use of CS-MSCs to reconstruct a tissue-engineered active biocornea, and the repair of the limbal and matrix microenvironment by CS-MSCs are reviewed, and their application prospects are discussed.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Chemical eye burns present an avoidable, but frequent, occupational injury with potentially detrimental consequences for the quality of life and occupational rehabilitation of the injured. A periodical review of guidelines is required to assure the optimal emergency management. We reviewed the literature with emphasis on current German guidelines, primarily MEDLINE. If the crucial first-line measure, the injury prevention has failed and an eye burn has been sustained, the immediate and copious rinsing of the eye is the pivotal emergency treatment modality. Whereas the immediacy and sufficiency of the emergency rinsing are largely unanimous, there is an ongoing debate about the benefits and risks of specific rinsing solutions, and regular updates on guidelines and recommendations for the emergency treatment are warranted. The easiest and readily available rinsing solution is tap water, which fulfils the crucial criteria conveniently in most industrialized countries: purity, sterility, and neutral pH. Other rinsing solutions are proposing higher osmolality to stabilize the physiological pH, because of their superior buffering capacity. However, there is no compelling evidence for a substantial benefit, and some reports suggest that there could be unwanted side effects. In combination with the substantially increased expenditure and a more complex handling procedure, currently a general recommendation of any other solution than tap water is not warranted.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To assess the effectiveness, safety, and cost-effectiveness of the Argus II in treatment of the retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients.
METHODS: The ProQuest, Web of Science, EMBASE, MEDLINE (via PubMed) were searched using combinations of the keywords of Argus, safety, effectiveness, bionic eye, retinal prosthesis, and RP through March 2018. The retrieved records were screened and then assessed for eligibility.
RESULTS: Totally 926 records were retrieved from the searched databases and finally 12 studies included. The RP patients showed improvements in visual function after receiving the prosthesis, compared to the time before the prosthesis or the time it was off. This was measured by square localization, direction of motion, and grating visual acuity tests. No major adverse effect was reported for the Argus II prosthesis itself and/or the surgery to implement it, but the most frequently reported items were hypotony, and conjunctival dehiscence. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was calculated to be €14603 per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) in UK and $207 616 per QALY in Canada.
CONCLUSION: The available evidence shows that the Argus II prosthesis in RP patients is effective in improvement of their visual function. Some minor adverse effects are reported for the prosthesis. The cost-effectiveness studies show that the technology is cost-effective only at high levels of willingness-to-pay.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness, affects more than 64 million people worldwide and is expected to grow in number due to the aging global population and enhanced methods of detection. Although topical therapies are often effective when used as prescribed, the drawbacks of current medical management methods include poor patient adherence, local and systemic side effects, and in some cases, limited therapeutic efficacy. Novel ocular drug delivery platforms promise to deliver differentiated drug formulations with targeted delivery leveraging patient-independent administration. Several platforms are in various stages of development with promising pre-clinical and clinical data. The Bimatoprost Sustained Release (SR) intracameral implant was approved in the United States in March of 2020, making it the first long-term injectable therapy available for the treatment of glaucoma. This review aims to provide an update on novel sustained release drug delivery systems that are available today as well as those that might be commercialized in coming years.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the most recognized inherited retinal disorder involving progressive photoreceptors degeneration which eventually causes blindness. However, the pathogenesis of RP is still unclear, making it difficult to establish satisfying treatments. Evidence have been found to support the theory that vascular dysfunction is associated with the progression of RP. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a newly developed technology that enables visualization as well as quantitative assessment of retinal and choroidal vasculature non-invasively. Advances in OCTA have opened a window for in-depth understanding of RP pathogenesis. Here, we propose a hypothesis of RP pathogenesis based on the current OCTA findings in RP, which includes four stages and two important key factors, vascular dysfunction and microglia activation. Further, we discuss the future animal experiments needed and how advanced OCTA technology can help to further verity the hypothesis. The final goal is to explore potential treatment options with enhanced understanding of RP pathogenesis.]]></description>

As the visual pathways conducting dynamic and static signals are different, DVATs may have potential advantages over the traditional visual acuity tests commonly used, such as static visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and static perimetry. Here, we provide a review of commonly applied DVATs and their several uses in clinical ophthalmology. These data indicate that the DVAT has its unique clinical significance in the evaluation of several ocular disorders.]]></description>

The vitreous body, the largest intraocular component, plays a key role in eye development, refraction, cell barrier function, oxygen metabolism and the pathogenesis of assorted diseases. Age, refraction and systemic diseases can cause vitreous metabolic abnormalities. With the continuous development of vitrectomy techniques and equipment, vitreous injections and vitrectomies have increased over the recent decades. However, the normal oxygen tension gradient in the vitreous helps to protect the lens and anterior chamber angle from oxidative stress damage, whereas the increased vitreous oxygen tension around lens and the trabecular meshwork after vitrectomy may lead to postoperative nuclear cataract and a high incidence of open angle glaucoma. As a conventional procedure, scleral buckling holds several advantages over vitrectomy in selected cases. This review raises concerns regarding the function of the vitreous, and encourages conducting vitreous interventions prudently.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Intraorbital wooden foreign bodies (IOWFBs) constitute a relatively rare ocular trauma, which occupy a special type of intraorbital foreign bodies (IOFBs). Data regarding IOWFBs must be obtained from case reports or small case series due to their rarity. Here, we reported 5 cases of IOWFBs and reviewed the related literatures, which could provide comprehensive information regarding the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and surgical treatment of IOWFBs. Combined with the published literature, a total of 51 independent cases were counted after we added 5 cases. Among them, the number of male and female patients was 35 and 16 respectively; the mean age was 27.3±18.2 (range 1-66)y. Obviously, the disorder seemed to occur mainly in young and middle-aged people. Because of the diversity in the clinical manifestations and imaging characteristics of IOWFBs, misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis often occur during the initial visit. Delayed diagnosis may lead to a high risk of orbital infection caused by IOWFBs. Surgery is the treatment of choice for most patients; however, the missed diagnosis and residue of foreign bodies after previous surgery cannot be ignored. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis is governed by the detailed trauma history, careful ocular examination, close observation of clinical manifestations, correct imaging diagnosis [e.g., magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized tomography (CT)], and timely and completely elimination of IOWFBs.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Tuberculous uveitis (TBU) comprises a broad clinical spectrum of ocular manifestations, making its diagnosis challenging. Ophthalmologists usually require evidence from investigations to confirm or support a clinical diagnosis of TBU. Since direct isolation of the causative organism from ocular specimens has limitations owing to the small volume of the ocular specimens, resultant test positivities are low in yield. Immunodiagnostic tests, including the tuberculin skin test and interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs), can help support a clinical diagnosis of TBU. Unlike the tuberculin skin test, IGRAs are in vitro tests that require a single visit and are not affected by prior Bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccination. Currently, available IGRAs consist of different techniques and interpretation methods. Moreover, newer generations have been developed to improve the sensitivity and ability to detect active tuberculosis. This narrative review collates salient practice points as a reference for general ophthalmologists, such as evidence for the utilization of IGRAs in patients with suspected TBU, and summarizes basic knowledge and details of clinical applications of these tests in a clinical setting.]]></description>

Although several approaches exist in the treatment of RB, some children with the disease do not have satisfactory results because of various factors. Plant-derived natural products have shown definite therapeutic effects in the treatment of various tumors and are also widely used in the study of RB. We review plant-derived natural products used in the study of anti-RB to provide ideas for the clinical application of these drugs and the development of new therapeutic drugs.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common complications of diabetes and major cause of blindness among people over 50 years old. Current studies showed that the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) played a central role in the pathogenesis of DR, and application of anti-VEGF has been widely acknowledged in treatment of DR targeting retinal neovascularization. However, anti-VEGF therapy has several limitations such as drug resistance. It is essential to develop new drugs for future clinical practice. The vitreous takes up 80% of the whole globe volume and is in direct contact with the retina, making it possible to explore the pathogenesis of DR by studying related factors in the vitreous. This article reviewed recent studies on DR-related factors in the vitreous, elaborating the VEGF upstream hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) pathway and downstream pathways phosphatidylinositol diphosphate (PIP2), phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K), and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways. Moreover, factors other than VEGF contributing to the pathogenesis of DR in the vitreous were also summarized, which included factors in four major systems, kallikrein-kinin system such as bradykinin, plasma kallikrein, and coagulation factor XII, oxidative stress system such as lipid peroxide, and superoxide dismutase, inflammation-related factors such as interleukin-1β/6/13/37, and interferon-γ, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) system such as MMP-9/14. Additionally, we also introduced other DR-related factors such as adiponectin, certain specific amino acids, non-coding RNA and renin (pro) receptor in separate studies.]]></description>

Although cataract surgery brings many benefits to the patients, the risk of various complications is still a concern. One of the infrequent adverse events but potentially affecting on patients’ visual acuity and contrast sensitivity is losing the transparency of IOL. IOL opacification may lead to IOL removal or exchange, which is unpleasant to both the patient and the surgeon. Several reports of acute IOL clouding are available in the literature describing various etiologies of this phenomenon, however, the exact mechanism remained unclear in some cases. Herein, we aimed to review the causes and outcomes of intraoperative and early postoperative IOL opacification.]]></description>

It is a secondary glaucoma that is most frequently caused by severe retinal ischemia. The most common diseases responsible for the development of neovascular glaucoma are diabetic retinopathy, ischemic central retinal vein occlusion, and ocular ischemic syndrome. Uncommon causes include ocular radiation, ocular tumors, uveitis and other miscellaneous conditions. Vascular endothelial growth factor is an important and likely predominant agent involved in the pathogenesis of intraocular neovascularization and neovascular glaucoma. The evolution of clinical and histopathological changes from predisposing conditions to the occurrence of rubeosis iridis and neovascular glaucoma is divided into four stages: prerubeosis, preglaucoma, open angle glaucoma, and angle-closure glaucoma.]]></description>

It also affects the health of meibomian glands and their secretions which further aggravates ocular surface disease. This article reviews current knowledge regarding ocular surface inflammation in DED and explores the relationships between the vicious cycles of DED, inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The clinical evaluation of eyes with such changes, markers that identify the presence of inflammation on the ocular surface and current treatment options are discussed.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a commonly inherited disease of the retina, which is characterized by progressive loss of visual function due to specific genetic mutations. There are many risk factors that may have effect on the progression of RP, such as inheritance patterns, genotype, gender, age, smoking, physical activity, and other demographic and environmental factors. Baseline visual field conditions, changes of ellipsoid zone, photoreceptor layer thickness, and choroidal structure are reported to be the phenotype risk factors for RP progression. Moreover, aqueous flare and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein are probable inflammation biomarkers for assessing the progression of RP. Increased oxidative stress is considered to be one of the potential factors for the existence of RP. The risk factors can be combined to form a corresponding prediction model to predict disease progression. This review is to summarize the current literature that studies the genetic, environmental, phenotypic, demographic, inflammatory and other risk factors of RP progression and discuss the most reliable risk factors that could provide predictive models.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Dry eye disease (DED) is one of the most common chronic multifactorial ocular surface diseases with high prevalence and complex pathogenesis. DED results in several ocular discomforts, vision fluctuation, and even potential damage of the ocular surface, bringing heavy burdens both on individuals and the society. The pathology of DED consists of tear film hyperosmolarity and immune responses on the ocular surface. Mice are widely used for developing models that simulate human DED features for investigating its pathogenesis and treatment. DED can be classified into aqueous-deficiency dry eye (ADDE) and evaporative dry eye (EDE). ADDE can be further divided into Sjögren syndrome dry eye (SSDE) and non-Sjögren syndrome dry eye (NSSDE). SSDE mouse models include natural strains, typified by non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice, and genetically engineered ones, like Aire-/- and Id3 knockout mice. Intrinsic EDE mainly refers to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Eda-/- Tabby, Sod1-/-, Elovl1-/- are the most common transgenic MGD mouse models. Transgenic mouse models provide useful tools for studying the pathogenesis of DED and evaluating its novel therapies. This review compares the major transgenic dry eye mouse models and discusses their applications in DED research.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) targeting cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 and programmed cell death protein 1 receptor/ligand have revolutionized cancer treatment, achieving unprecedented efficacy in numerous malignancies. Despite the excellent therapeutic effects of ICIs, medications, such as pembrolizumab, ipilimumab, nivolumab, atezolizumab, avelumab, and durvalumab, typically cause a broad spectrum of toxicity events termed as immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Out of all irAEs, ophthalmic adverse events occur infrequently and are not comprehensively recognized. The current understanding of ophthalmic irAEs is mainly derived from case reports and case series. In this review, based on relevant articles in the literature and current evidence, we summarize the incidences, manifestations, diagnoses, underlying mechanisms, treatments, and outcomes of ophthalmic irAEs and discuss possible management strategies. A better understanding of these features is critical for managing patients with ICI-associated ophthalmic adverse events.]]></description>

Scleral remodeling plays a critical function in the incidence and progression of myopia. <description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[With the continuing progress in space exploration, a new and perplexing condition related to spaceflight ocular syndrome has emerged in the past four decades. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has named this condition “spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome” (SANS). This article gives an overview of the current research about SANS and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) by analyzing the existing publications on PubMed and CNKI and reports from NASA about SANS, summarizing the potential pathogenesis of SANS and physical interventions for treating SANS, and discussing the feasibility of treating SANS with TCM. Due to the unique characteristics of the space environment, it is infeasible to conduct large-scale human studies of SANS. SANS may be the result of the interaction of multiple factors, including inflammation and fluid displacement in the optic nerve sheath and cerebrospinal fluid. We should pay attention to SANS. Visual function is not only related to the health of astronauts but also closely related to space operations. TCM has antioxidative stress and antiapoptotic effects and is widely used for optic nerve diseases. TCM has great potential to prevent SANS.]]></description>

Here the therapies which have reached clinical trial for treatment of dry AMD were reviewed. A thorough search of PubMed, Embase, and Clinicaltrials.gov has led to a comprehensive collection of the most recent strategies being evaluated. This review also endeavors to assess the status and future directions of therapeutics for this debilitating condition.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR), and associated morbidity is high in the Asia-Pacific region. Emerging evidence suggests a potential role for fenofibrate in the prevention of progression of DR, especially in patients with cardiovascular risk, and pre-existing mild-to-moderate DR. Fenofibrate has also been found to reduce maculopathy, and the need for laser treatment in these patients. Considering these benefits of fenofibrate, a group of experts from the fields of endocrinology and ophthalmology convened in May 2017, to discuss on the the mechanism of action, and clinical efficacy of fenofibrate in DR. The findings from key clinical studies on fenofibrate in DR were reviewed by the experts, and consensus statements were derived to define the role of fenofibrate in the prevention and treatment of DR. The statements were rated based on the GRADE criteria. An algorithm was also developed for the screening and treatment of DR in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and the place of fenofibrate was defined in the algorithm. The expert recommendations, and the algorithm provided in this review will serve as a guide to the clinicians to reconsider the adjunctive use of fenofibrate for preventing the progression of DR in selected T2D patients.]]></description>

Infection-caused endophthalmitis can lead to irreversible vision loss, accompanied by eye pain or eye distention, and in the most severe cases the removal of the eyeball. Microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites typically account for the disease and the entry pathways of the microbial can be divided into either endogenous or exogenous approaches, according to the origin of the etiological agents. Exogenous endophthalmitis can be derived from various occasions (such as post-operative complications or trauma) while endogenous endophthalmitis results from the bloodstream which carries pathogens to the eye. This review aims to summarize the application of new technology in pathogen identification of endophthalmitis so as to prevent the disease and better guide clinical diagnosis and treatment.]]></description>

Epidemic of the virus produces a tremendous pressure on the global health systems. With progressive insight into SARS-CoV-2, the role of eye tissue has attracted wide attention in the spread of COVID-19. Whether SARS-CoV-2 can enter the human body through eyes and cause infection? The fact that unprotected exposure of the eyes to 2019-nCoV might have allowed the virus to infect the body implies that 2019-nCOV can invade eye tissue and set foot in organism. Facing the severe challenge of preventing spread of the COVID-19, combined with the high-risk environment of ophthalmology, it is crucial to investigate ocular tropism of coronavirus. This paper explores the possibility of coronavirus transmission through the eye from aspects of probable mechanisms, clinical cases, detection of coronavirus; and puts forward precautions for ophthalmologists and nurses. Consequently, this review reveals our understanding of ocular tropism of coronavirus and contributes to determining risk of ocular transmission, raising awareness of necessary eye protection among medical workers and reducing further prevalence of SARS-CoV-2.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[The recognition of the profound impact of the human gastrointestinal microbiome (GM) on human autoimmune diseases has gradually increased thanks to deeper research efforts. As a systemic autoimmune disease, primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) cannot be completely cured. Human studies have revealed that GM species and diversity are altered in patients with pSS compared with healthy individuals. Animal studies have provided possible mechanisms for the association between pSS and GM. The potential role of GM in pSS is exerted through several mechanisms. GM dysbiosis leads to increased intestinal permeability, which increases the risk of GM antigen exposure and activates specific autoreactive T lymphocytes via “molecular mimicry”. In addition, GM antigen exposure and intestinal immune tolerance loss caused by GM dysbiosis together induce chronic local gut mucosal inflammation, which deteriorates to systemic chronic non-specific inflammation with the circulation of pro-inflammatory lymphocytes and cytokines. These factors eventually activate autoreactive B lymphocytes and lead to pSS. If GM plays a key role in the pathogenesis of pSS, clarifying the underlying mechanisms will be helpful for the development of new therapies targeting GM for dry eye associated with pSS. This review summarizes the latest knowledge about the relationship between GM and pSS, with the aim of contributing to future research and to the development of new clinical applications.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[A novel, algorithmic “naming-meshing” system was introduced for the distinction of hypopyon from pseudohypopyon to make an early diagnosis and prompt treatment of anterior chamber collection standardized to encompass all sediment characteristics. For this reason, a literature review of “hypopyon” and “pseudohypopyon” was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from 1966 to May 15, 2023. Two issues were clarified: 1) which strategies should the ophthalmologist follow when asked to evaluate an eye with anterior chamber sedimentation to distinguish hypopyon from pseudohypopyon, and 2) in which systemic disorders should a non-ophthalmologist order a prompt ophthalmic consultation to distinguish pseudohypopyon from hypopyon. Pathognomonic characteristics of the sediment were examined; scleral show (warm/cold), location (corneal/anterior chamber/capsular/posterior), visibility (macro/micro/occult-angle), orientation (horizontal/vertical/oblique), number (single/double), shape (convex/triangular/pyramidal/ring/lumpy/inverse), and color (white/yellow/pink/brown/black). Associated findings were then assessed; acute/chronic, spontaneous/provoked, unilateral/bilateral, inflammatory/non-inflammatory, suppurative (non-sterile)/non-suppurative (sterile), granulomatous/non-granulomatous, recurrent/non-recurrent, shifting/non-shifting, and transient/persistent. The type of precipitation was named (naming) and matched (meshing) to a potential list of etiologies (inflammatory, infective, therapeutic, masquerades). Given that (pseudo)hypopyon predominantly afflicts younger patients in their most productive years, clinicians supervising such patients should be aware of all sediment characteristics. The ophthalmologist should never ask non-ophthalmologists to run the full battery of tests in a patient with (pseudo)hypopyon, and rather indicate which type of collection is present, what its pathognomonic feature is, and what the most likely diagnoses to be excluded are.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To collect and present updated evidence about epidemiological aspects of retinoblastoma (Rb) in the world.METHODS: A comprehensive search without the time and language restrictions was conducted in international databases, including MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed. The search keywords were “retinoblastoma” OR “retinal Neuroblastoma” OR “retinal glioma” OR “retinoblastoma eye cancer” OR “retinal glioblastoma”.RESULTS: The worldwide incidence of Rb is 1 in 16 000-28 000 live births, but was higher in developing compared to developed countries. Several attempts for improving early detection and treatment had increased the Rb survival rate from 5% to 90% in developed countries over the past decade, but its survival was lower in developing countries (about 40% in low-income countries) and the majority of mortalities occurred in developing countries. The etiology of Rb could be viewed as genetics in the heritable form and environmental and lifestyle factors in the sporadic form. Some environmental risk factors such as in vitro fertilization; insect sprays; father’s occupational exposure to oil mists in metal working, and poor living conditions might play a role in the occurrence of the disease. Although ethnicity might affect Rb incidence, sex has no documented effect and the best treatment approaches were now ophthalmic artery chemosurgery and intravitreal chemotherapy.CONCLUSION: Determining the role of genetics and environmental factors helps to accurately predict the prognosis and identify the mechanism of the disease, which can reduce the risk of tumor development.]]></description>

Currently used myopia control treatments, such as multifocal soft contact lenses or spectacle lenses, orthokeratology, and atropine eyedrops, either do not completely arrest myopia progression or are associated with significant ocular and possibly systemic side effects. A new candidate for pharmaceutical control of myopia progression and excessive eye elongation, the non-selective adenosine antagonist 7-methylxanthine (7-MX), appears to be non-toxic and effective in reducing myopia progression and axial eye growth in experimental and clinical studies. The latest findings regarding 7-MX for myopia control and evaluate its potential as a supplement to existing treatment options were reviewed.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Posterior choroidal leiomyoma is a sporadic, rare benign tumor that is always confused with anaplastic melanoma. Here we report a case and provide a review. Most of the preoperative findings in our case were suggestive of malignant choroidal melanoma. However, the contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) suggested a benign hemangioma. In summary, the posterior choroidal leiomyomas were yellowish-white in color and most commonly located in the temporal quadrant of the fundus (11/15). They were more frequent in Asians (13/16), the prevalence was almost equal in males and females (9:7), with a mean age of 35y. Microscopically, the tumor typically showed spindle cell bundles and nonmitotic ovoid nuclei arranged in intersecting fascicles. Vitrectomy is now a popular treatment option and definitive diagnosis can be made after immunohistochemistry. Finally, some summarized features of this tumor differ from those previously described. These may help in the diagnosis of posterior choroidal leiomyoma and differentiation from malignant melanoma.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Glaucoma is a kind of optic neuropathy mainly manifested in the permanent death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), atrophy of the optic nerve, and loss of visual ability. The main risk factors for glaucoma consist of the pathological elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) and aging. Although the mechanism of glaucoma remains an open question, a theory related to mitochondrial dysfunction has been emerging in the last decade. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the mitochondrial respiratory chain are abnormally produced as a result of mitochondrial dysfunction. Oxidative stress takes place when the cellular antioxidant system fails to remove excessive ROS promptly. Meanwhile, more and more studies show that there are other common features of mitochondrial dysfunction in glaucoma, including damage of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), defective mitochondrial quality control, ATP reduction, and other cellular changes, which are worth summarizing and further exploring. The purpose of this review is to explore mitochondrial dysfunction in the mechanism of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Based on the mechanism, the existing therapeutic options are summarized, including medications, gene therapy, and red-light therapy, which are promising to provide feasible neuroprotective ideas for the treatment of glaucoma.]]></description>

Patients with CVL may experience various vision impairments, including of visual acuity, fixation stability, contrast sensitivity, and stereoacuity. After CVL, most patients develop a preferred retinal locus outside the affected macular region, which serves as a new visual reference. In this review, we provide an overview of the visual function and impairment in individuals with CVL. In addition, the important role of biofeedback training on the visual function and activity of individuals with CVL is also reviewed. Accordingly, the location and development of the preferred retinal loci are discussed. Finally, this review discusses how to conduct biofeedback training to treat individuals with CVL.]]></description>

During the last decade, increasing emphasis has been placed on the underlying roles of m6A modification owing to their great importance in biological significance. The abnormal regulation of m6A modification will lead to aberrant cellular behavior and various diseases. Recently, studies have demonstrated that m6A modification is closely associated with the genesis and progression of ocular surface diseases (OSDs). This review focus on the role of m6A modification and research progress in OSDs including fungal keratitis, herpes simplex keratitis, immune-related keratoconjunctival diseases, pterygium, ocular chemical burns, and Graves’ ophthalmopathy, which may provide new insights into and prospective applications for OSDs.]]></description>

Compared with systemic chemotherapy, regional chemotherapy has similar efficacy and fewer systemic adverse effects. Regional chemotherapy for UM liver metastases includes hepatic artery infusion (HAI), transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), and isolated hepatic perfusion (IHP). In this review, we aim to examine the efficacy of regional chemotherapy and compare HAI, TACE, and IHP in terms of overall survival (OS). The three approaches showed no obvious difference in OS results.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Adequate near and intermediate visual capacity is important in performing everyday tasks, especially after the introduction of smartphones and computers in our professional and recreational activities. Primary objective of this study was to review all available reading tests both conventional and digital and explore their integrated characteristics. A systematic review of the recent literature regarding reading charts was performed based on the PubMed, Google Scholar, and Springer databases between February and March 2021. Data from 11 descriptive and 24 comparative studies were included in the present systematic review. Clinical settings are still dominated by conventional printed reading charts; however, the most prevalent of them (i.e., Jaeger type charts) are not validated. Reliable reading capacity assessment is done only by those that comply with the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) recommendations. Digital reading tests are gaining popularity both in clinical and research settings and are differentiated in standard computer-based applications that require installation either in a computer or a tablet (e.g., Advanced VISION Test and web-based ones e.g., Democritus Digital Acuity Reading Test requires no installation). It is evident that validated digital tests will prevail in future clinical or research settings and it is upon ophthalmologists to select the one most compatible with their examination routine.]]></description>

Yet, early diagnosis and effective treatment for DED continue to pose significant challenges in clinical settings. Nevertheless, by recognizing key phenomena in DED such as ocular surface inflammation, hyperosmolarity, and tear film instability, this article provides a comprehensive overview of both traditional and recently developed methods for diagnosing and monitoring DED. The information serves as a valuable resource not only for clinical diagnosis but also for further research into DED.]]></description>

Given the rising prevalence of blindness caused by corneal scarring, increasing attention has been focused on corneal epithelial-stromal defects. Currently, the etiology and pathogenesis of these defects remain inadequately understood, necessitating further investigation through experimental research. Various modeling methods exist both domestically and internationally, each with distinct adaptive conditions, advantages, and disadvantages. This review primarily aims to summarize the techniques used to establish optimal animal models of corneal epithelial-stromal injury, including mechanical modeling, chemical alkali burns, post-refractive surgery infections, and genetic engineering. The intention is to provide valuable insights for studying the mechanisms underlying corneal epithelial-stromal injury and the development of corresponding therapeutic interventions.]]></description>

There are numerous factors that control the balance of iron metabolism, and its storage and transportation mechanisms are intricate. As one of the most energy-intensive tissues in the body, the retina is susceptible to iron imbalance. The occurrence of iron overload in the retina leads to the generation of a significant quantity of reactive oxygen species. This will aggravate local oxidative stress and inflammatory reactions and even lead to ferroptosis, eventually resulting in retinal dysfunction. The blood-retina-retinal barrier is eventually harmed by oxidative stress and elevated inflammation, which are characteristics of retinal vascular disorders. The pathophysiology of retinal vascular disorders may be significantly influenced by iron. Recently, iron-chelating agents have been found to have antioxidative and anti-inflammatory actions in addition to iron chelating. Therefore, iron neutralization is considered to be a new and potentially useful therapeutic strategy. This article reviews the iron overload in retinal vascular diseases and discusses the therapeutic potential of iron-chelating agents.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is widely used in ophthalmic clinic, including in diagnosis, surgery, prosthetics, medications, drug development and delivery, and medical education. Articles published in 2011–2022 into bioinks, printing technologies, and bioprinting applications in ophthalmology were reviewed and the strengths and limitations of bioprinting in ophthalmology highlighted. The review highlighted the trade-offs of printing technologies and bioinks in respect to, among others, material type cost, throughput, gelation technique, cell density, cell viability, resolution, and printing speed. There is already widespread ophthalmological application of bioprinting outside clinical settings, including in educational modelling, retinal imaging/visualization techniques and drug design/testing. In clinical settings, bioprinting has already found application in pre-operatory planning. Even so, the findings showed that even with its immense promise, actual translation to clinical applications remains distant, but relatively closer for the corneal (except stromal) tissues, epithelium, endothelium, and conjunctiva, than it was for the retina. This review similarly reflected on the critical on the technical, practical, ethical, and cost barrier to rapid progress of bioprinting in ophthalmology, including accessibility to the most sophisticated bioprinting technologies, choice, and suitability of bioinks, tissue viability and storage conditions. The extant research is encouraging, but more work is clearly required for the push towards clinical translation of research.]]></description>
