<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To comprehensively evaluate the potential association of COL1A1 polymorphisms with high myopia by a systematic review and Meta-analysis.
METHODS: All association studies on COL1A1 and high myopia reported up to June 10, 2014 in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Chinese Biomedical Database were retrieved. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were analyzed for single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) using fixed- and random- effects models according to between-study heterogeneity. Publication bias analyses were conducted by Egger’s test.
RESULTS: A total of four studies from reported papers were included in this analysis. The Meta-analyses for COL1A1 rs2075555, composed of 2304 high myopia patients and 2272 controls, failed to detect any significant association with high myopia. A total of 971 cases and 649 controls were tested for COL1A1 rs2269336. The association of COL1A1 rs2269336 with high myopia was observed in recessive model (CC vs CG+GG, P=0.03) and in heterozygous model (CG vs GG, P=0.04), but not in other models.
CONCLUSION: This Meta-analysis shows that COL1A1 rs2269336 (CC vs CG+GG) affects individual susceptibility to high myopia, whereas there is no association detected between SNPs rs2075555 and high myopia. Given the limited sample size, further investigations including more ethnic groups are required to validate the association.]]></description>

<title xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="text"><![CDATA[Sub-threshold micro-pulse diode laser treatment in diabetic macular edema: A Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials]]></title>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To examine possible differences in clinical outcomes between sub-threshold micro-pulse diode laser photocoagulation (SDM) and traditional modified Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (mETDRS) treatment protocol in diabetic macular edema (DME).
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search using the Cochrane Collaboration methodology to identify RCTs comparing SDM with mETDRS for DME. The participants were type I or type II diabetes mellitus with clinically significant macular edema treated by SDM from previously reported randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The primary outcome measures were the changes in the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and the central macular thickness (CMT) as measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT). The secondary outcomes were the contrast sensitivity and the damages of the retina.
RESULTS: Seven studies were identified and analyzed for comparing SDM (215 eyes) with mETDRS (210 eyes) for DME. There were no statistical differences in the BCVA after treatment between the SDM and mETDRS based on the follow-up: 3mo (MD, -0.02; 95% CI, -0.12 to 0.09; P=0.77), 6mo (MD, -0.02; 95% CI, -0.12 to 0.09; P=0.75), 12mo (MD, -0.05; 95% CI, -0.17 to 0.07; P=0.40). Likewise, there were no statistical differences in the CMT after treatment between the SDM and mETDRS in 3mo (MD, -9.92; 95% CI, -28.69 to 8.85; P=0.30), 6mo (MD, -11.37; 95% CI, -29.65 to 6.91; P=0.22), 12mo (MD, 8.44; 95% CI, -29.89 to 46.77; P=0.67). Three RCTs suggested that SDM laser results in good preservation of contrast sensitivity as mETDRS, in two different follow-up evaluations: 3mo (MD, 0.05; 95% CI, 0 to 0.09; P=0.04) and 6mo (MD, 0.02; 95% CI, -0.10 to 0.14; P=0.78). Two RCTs showed that the SDM laser treatment did less retinal damage than that mETDRS did (OR, 0.05; 95% CI, 0.02 to 0.13; P<0.01).
CONCLUSION: SDM laser photocoagulation shows an equally good effect on visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and reduction of DME as compared to conventional mETDRS protocol with less retinal damage.]]></description>

<title xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="text"><![CDATA[Comparison of the efficacy of anti-VEGF monotherapy versus PDT and intravitreal anti-VEGF combination treatment in AMD: a Meta-analysis and systematic review]]></title>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To compare the effect of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) monotherapy versus photodynamic therapy (PDT) and anti-VEGF combination treatment in age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
METHODS: A computerized online search was performed using PubMed, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library. Studies that compared anti-VEGF monotherapy with PDT and anti-VEGF combination treatment of AMD and were designed as randomized controlled trials were included. The means and standard deviations of the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT), number of treatments and proportions of patients who gained BCVA ≥15, 10, 5, or 0 letters at 12th month were extracted. A systematic review and Meta-analysis of the comparison of the two approaches was conducted using Review Manager 5.2. Subgroup. A sensitivity analysis was also performed.
RESULTS: Eight studies were included. When the subgroup and sensitivity analysis was conducted, the results indicated that in the findings that included the monotherapy group and PDT (standard fluence, SF) group of Kaiser’s study, the patients in the monotherapy group had a better BCVA compared with the combination group at 12th month in the PDT (SF) subgroup [weighted mean difference (WMD): 3.54; 95%CI: 0.36 to 6.73; P=0.03], and there were more patients who gained ≥15 letters of BCVA in the monotherapy group compared with the combination group in the total result [odds ratio (OR): 1.41; 95%CI: 1.02 to 1.95; P=0.04]. The same conclusion was obtained in the total result that included the monotherapy group and PDT (reduced fluence, RF) group of Kaiser’s study (OR: 1.56; 95%CI: 1.13 to 2.15; P=0.007). However, there were no significant differences in the other indexes between the two therapies.
CONCLUSION: We found that anti-VEGF monotherapy is more effective on the recovery of visual acuity than combination therapy and more researches with lager sample size should be performed to study on the effect of the two therapy approaches on CRT and number of injections.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To explore the relationship between metabolic risk factors and dry eye syndrome (DES).
METHODS: Retrieved studies on the association of metabolic syndrome risk factors (hypertension, hyperglycemia, obesity, and hyperlipidemia) and DES were collected from PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library in December 2015. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were pooled to evaluate the final relationship. Subgroup analyses were conducted according to diagnostic criteria of DES.
RESULTS: Nine cross-sectional studies and three case-control studies were included in this Meta-analysis. The pooled results showed that people with hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia had a higher risk of suffering from DES (P<0.05), especially the typical DES symptoms. On the other hand, obesity did not increase the risk of DES.
CONCLUSION: The present Meta-analysis suggests that all metabolic risk factors except obesity were risk factors for DES.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate and compare the intraoperative parameters and postoperative outcomes of torsional mode and longitudinal mode of phacoemulsification.
METHODS: Pertinent studies were identified by a computerized MEDLINE search from January 2002 to September 2013. The Meta-analysis is composed of two parts. In the first part the intraoperative parameters were considered: ultrasound time (UST) and cumulative dissipated energy (CDE). The intraoperative values were also distinctly considered for two categories (moderate and hard cataract group) depending on the nuclear opacity grade. In the second part of the study the postoperative outcomes as the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and the endothelial cell loss (ECL) were taken in consideration.
RESULTS: The UST and CDE values proved statistically significant in support of torsional mode for both moderate and hard cataract group. The analysis of BCVA did not present statistically significant difference between the two surgical modalities. The ECL count was statistically significant in support of torsional mode (P<0.001).
CONCLUSION: The Meta-analysis shows the superiority of the torsional mode for intraoperative parameters (UST, CDE) and postoperative ECL outcomes.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To assess the feasibility of radial optic neurotomy (RON) in central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) treatment with a Meta-analysis.
METHODS: Electronic databases were searched for comprehensive articles that compared efficacy of RON with that of other treatments in CRVO. Study quality was assessed and risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) with fix- or random-effects model were calculated according to the heterogeneity.
RESULTS: A total of 200 eyes from 5 studies were included. The results indicated that no significant differences were found between groups with and without RON in improvement of visual acuity (VA) at 6mo follow-up (pooled RR 0.51, 95%CI 0.22 to 1.18, P=0.117) while improvement of VA showed significantly favourable in patients receiving RON treatment at 12mo follow-up (pooled RR 2.27, 95%CI 1.31 to 3.95, P=0.004). For complications, RON treatment was more effective in reducing neovascular glaucoma (pooled RR 0.45, 95%CI 0.21 to 0.97, P=0.042) but was comparable in retinal detachment (pooled RR 2.41, 95%CI 0.51 to 11.39, P=0.267) and vitreous hemorrhage (pooled RR 0.91, 95%CI 0.33 to 2.46, P=0.847).
CONCLUSION: Compared with some certain treatment modalities, RON might offer better VA at 12mo and decrease the rate of neovascular glaucoma without changing the rate of retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage. Further studies are required considering the limitation of the research.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To draw a Meta-analysis over the comparison of the intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering efficacy and safety between the commonly used fixed-combinations of prostaglandin analogs and 0.5% timolol with prostaglandin analogs (PGAs) monotherapy.
METHODS: After searching the published reports from MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, all randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) comparing the fixed combination of PGAs/timolol therapy (FCs) and PGAs monotherapy with treatment duration at least 6mo were included. The efficacy outcomes were mean diurnal IOP, percentage of participants whose IOP were lower than 18 mm Hg, incidence of visual field change, while the safety outcomes included corneal side effects, hyperemia and eye irritation. The analysis was carried out in RevMan version 5.3 software.
RESULTS: After six-month medical intervention, the mean diurnal IOP of FCs was lower than PGAs (MD -1.14, 95% CI -1.82 to -0.46, P=0.001); the percentage of target IOP achieving between FCs and PGAs showed no significant difference (RR 1.18, 95% CI 0.97 to 1.43, P=0.10). No statistically significant differences of the incidence of hyperemia (RR 0.67, 95% CI 0.45 to 1.01, P=0.06) and eye irritation (RR 1.20, 95% CI 0.95 to 1.51, P=0.12) between the FCs and PGAs monotherapy were detected. Only one research involved in corneal events, result of this trial revealed no difference between two intervention groups regarding corneal effects (central endothelial cell density, MD -0.20, 95% CI -0.72 to 0.32, P=0.45; central corneal thickness, MD -0.01, 95% CI -0.02 to 0.00, P=0.23). The evaluation of visual field change was not performed due to the limited duration of the trials included in this Meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: The long-term efficacy of the FCs overweighed the PGAs monotherapy in lowering IOP, but in the incidence of hyperemia and eye irritation syndromes, the differences are not statically significant. More RCTs with detailed and authentic data over the assessments of visual functions and morphology of optic nerve heads are hoped to be conducted.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To identify possible differences of efficacy, safety, predictability, higher-order aberrations and corneal biomechnical parameters after small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond lenticule extraction (FLEx).
METHODS: A systematic literature retrieval was conducted in Medline，Embase and the Cochrane Library, up to October, 2015. The included studies were subject to a Meta-analysis. Comparison between SMILE and FLEx was measured as pooled odds ratio (OR) or weighted mean differences (WMD). Of 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to analyze data.
RESULTS: A total of seven studies were included. Firstly, there were no differences in uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) 20/20 or better (OR, 1.37; 95% CI, 0.69 to 2.69; P=0.37) and logMAR UDVA (WMD, -0.02; 95% CI, -0.05 to 0.01; P=0.17) after SMILE versus FLEx. We found no differences in corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) unchanged (OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.46 to 2.11; P=0.97) and logMAR CDVA (WMD, -0.00; 95% CI, -0.01 to 0.01; P=0.90) either. Secondly, we found no differences in refraction within ±1.00 D (OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.13 to 7.28; P=0.99) and ±0.50 D (OR, 1.62; 95% CI, 0.62 to 4.28; P=0.33) of target postoperatively. Thirdly, for higher-order aberrations, we found no differences in the total higher-order aberrations (WMD, -0.04; 95% CI, -0.09 to 0.01; P=0.14), coma (WMD, -0.04; 95% CI, -0.09 to 0.01; P=0.11), spherical (WMD, 0.01; 95% CI, -0.02 to 0.03; P=0.60) and trefoil (WMD, -0.00; 95% CI, -0.04 to 0.03; P=0.76). Furthermore, for corneal biomechanical parameters, we also found no differences (WMD, 0.08; 95% CI, -0.17 to 0.33; P=0.54) after SMILE versus FLEx.
CONCLUSION: There are no statistically differences in efficacy, safety, predictability, higher-order aberrations and corneal biomechnical parameters postoperative between SMILE and FLEx.]]></description>

METHODS: Searches of peer-reviewed literature were conducted in PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library. The search terms were “optic capture” and “cataract”. The retrieval period ended in December 2014. Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs), case-control studies and cohort studies were included. Meta-analyses were performed. Pooled weighted mean differences and risk ratios with 95% confidence intervals were estimated.
RESULTS: Ten studies involving 282 eyes were included, 5 of which were RCTs involving 194 eyes. The application of optic capture significantly reduced both opacification of the visual axis (RR: 0.12; 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.85; P=0.03) and occurrence of geometric decentration (RR: 0.09; 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.46; P=0.004). But it did not significantly affect best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (WMD: -0.01; 95%CI: -0.07 to 0.05; P=0.75) and influence the occurrence of posterior synechia (RR: 1.53; 95% CI: 0.84 to 2.77; P=0.17). Deposits in the anterior intraocular lens were significantly increased in the optic capture group early after surgery (RR: 1.40; 95% CI: 1.05 to 1.86; P=0.02) and at the last follow-up (RR: 2.30; 95% CI: 1.08 to 4.92; P=0.03). The quality of the evidence was assessed as high.
CONCLUSION: The application of optic capture significantly reduces opacification of visual axis and occurrence of geometric decentration but do not significantly improve BCVA with notable safety.]]></description>

<title xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="text"><![CDATA[Phacoemulsification versus combined phacotrabeculectomy in the treatment of primary angle-closure glaucoma with cataract: a Meta-analysis]]></title>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To compare the efficacy and safety of phacoemulsification (Phaco) against combined phacotrabeculectomy (Phacotrabe) in primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) with coexisting cataract.
METHODS: By searching electronically the PubMed, EMBASE, Scientific Citation Index and Cochrane Library published up from inception to January 2014, all randomized controlled trials that matched the predefined criteria were included. The quality of included trials was evaluated according to the guidelines developed by the cochrane collaboration. And the outcomes estimating efficacy and safety of two different surgical treatments were measured and synthesised by RevMan 5.0.
RESULTS: Five randomized controlled trials were selected and included in Meta-analysis with a total of 468 patients (468 eyes) with both PACG and cataract. We found that Phacotrabe had a greater intraocular pressure (IOP) lowing effect [preoperative IOP: weighted mean difference (WMD)=0.58, 95% confidence intervals (95% CI, -0.53 to 1.69), P=0.31; postoperative IOP: WMD=1.37, 95% CI (0.45 to 2.28), P=0.003], a lower number of anti-glaucoma medications [ risk ratio (RR) =0.05, 95% CI (0.02 to 0.18), P<0.00001] needed postoperatively and less serious damage of optic nerve [risk ratio (RR)=0.48, 95% CI (0.21 to 1.07), P=0.07], but a higher risk of complications [odds ratio (OR) =0.04, 95% CI (0.01 to 0.16), P<0.00001] compared with Phaco. The rest studies indicated that there had no significantly difference between the two surgical methods for postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) [WMD=-0.05, 95% CI (-0.14 to 0.05), P=0.32] and loss of visual field [OR=1.06, 95% CI (0.61 to 1.83), P=0.83].
CONCLUSION: Phaco alone compared with Phacotrabe had a better effect in IOP reduction, whereas the security decline. Considering the number of sample size, our results remains to be further studied.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To investigate the association between collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1) gene and high myopia.
METHODS: In this Meta-analysis, we examined 5 published case-control studies that involved 1942 high myopia cases and 2929 healthy controls to assess the association between the COL1A1 rs2075555 polymorphism and high myopia risk. We calculated the pooled odds ratios (ORs) of COL1A1 rs2075555 polymorphism in high myopia cases vs healthy controls to evaluate the strength of the association.
RESULTS: Overall, there was no significant difference both in the genotype and allele distributions of COL1A1 rs2075555 polymorphism between high myopia cases and healthy controls: CC vs AA OR=1.10, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.76-1.58; AC vs AA OR=0.98, 95%CI 0.80-1.20; CC/AC vs AA/OR=1.01, 95%CI 0.84-1.22; CC vs AC/AA OR=1.06, 95%CI=0.93-1.20; C vs A OR=1.06, 95%CI 0.91-1.23). In addition, in the stratified analyses by ethnicity, no significant associations were found in any genetic model both in European and Asia cohorts.
CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that the COL1A1 rs2075555 polymorphism may not affect susceptibility to high myopia.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To perform a Meta-analysis on the precision and safety of femtosecond laser (FSL) capsulotomy compared with manual continuous curvilinear capsulotomy (CCC).
METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library databases, and Clinical Trials.gov that maintained our inclusion criteria. Reference lists of retrieved articles were also reviewed. The effects of morphology of capsulorhexis and the tears of anterior capsule were calculated by using random-effect models.
RESULTS: We identified 4 randomized and 7 nonrandomized studies involving 2941 eyes. The diameter of capsulotomy and the rates of anterior capsule tear showed no statistically difference between FSL group and manual group (MD=0.03; 95%CI, -0.03 to 0.09, P=0.31), and (OR=1.40; 95%CI, 0.28 to 6.97, P=0.68) respectively. In terms of the circularity of capsulotomy, FSL group had a more significant advantage than the manual CCC group (MD=0.09; 95%CI, 0.05 to 0.12, P<0.0001).
CONCLUSION: Our Meta-analysis shows that FSL can perform a capsulotomy with more precision and higher reliability than manual CCC. The results in diameter of capsulotomy and the rate of anterior capsule tears was no significant difference between FSL and manual CCC groups. However in terms of circularity, the FSL was superior to the manual procedure.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To systematically review the association between complement factors I (CFI) polymorphisms and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and to explore whether CFI polymorphisms are associated with AMD.
METHODS: Meta-analysis of articles published from 1995 to January 2015 of articles involved with AMD and polymorphisms of the CFI gene. Eligible data were pooled in a Meta-analysis, analyzing using STATA software (version 12.0), Review Manager (version 5.2) and different models based on the heterogeneity of effect sizes. Egger’s test, Begg’s rank correlation methods were used to evaluate for publication bias.
RESULTS: Thirteen articles were eligible, describing two loci polymorphisms of the CFI gene (of which 12 articles focus on rs10033900T>C and 3 articles focus on rs2285714C>T). For rs10033900T>C, the results of our study&nbsp;revealed that having a mutant allele C, TC, CC and TC+CC was associated with a decreased risk of AMD in all population groups studied (C versus T models, OR=0.84, 95%CI: 0.72-0.99, P=0.04; TC versus TT models OR=0.89, 95%CI: 0.88-0.99, P=0.04; CC versus TT models, OR=0.76, 95%CI: 0.60-0.98, P=0.03; TC+CC versus TT models, OR=0.81, 95%CI:0.65-0.99, P=0.04). We found that C allele were related to lower AMD risk in the Caucasian population by subgroup analysis, but there was no association with AMD under the allele and genotypes comparison in Asian studies. For rs2285714 C>T, the TC, TT genotypes contributed to a higher risk of AMD, compared with the CC carriers and TC+CC (OR=1.34, 95%CI: 1.09-1.63, P=0.004; OR=1.50, 95%CI: 1.25-1.80, P<0.0001).
CONCLUSION: This Meta-analysis suggests that CFI rs10033900T>C and rs2285714C>T polymorphisms may contribute to AMD.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To systematically review the current evidence based on the efficacy and cost of Ex-PRESS implantation and trabeculectomy (Trab) for uncontrolled glaucoma.
METHODS: Clinical trials were identified by electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, ISI Web of science and Cochrane library), and data, such as intraocular pressure (IOP), the complete and qualified success rate, the postoperative complications and the cost, were exacted from these relevant studies. Weighted mean difference (WMD), odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated and were pooled using a random-effects model.
RESULTS: Eleven relevant publications and two abstracts met the inclusion criteria. The efficacy of Ex-PRESS was similar to that of Trab in the percentage of IOP reduction (IOPR %) at 1, 2y (WMD: -2.01; 95% CI: -7.92-3.90; P=0.50 and WMD: 2.89; 95% CI: -8.05-13.83; P=0.60, respectively). Ex-PRESS possessed a significant higher complete and qualified success rate (OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 1.07-2.35; P=0.02 and OR: 1.74; 95% CI: 1.06-2.86; P=0.03, respectively). Moreover, Ex-PRESS exerted a significantly lower frequency of hypotony and hyphema than Trab (OR: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.21-0.72; P=0.003 and OR: 0.27; 95% CI: 0.10-0.69; P=0.003, respectively). However, there was no consistent result on the cost between the two groups according to the previous three studies.
CONCLUSION: Both Trab and Ex-PRESS have equivalent efficacy in lowering IOP, yet Ex-PRESS had a lower risk of hypotony and hyphema than Trab. Nevertheless, whether the cost of Ex-PRESS was less than that of Trab should be further investigated to ensure evidence-based conclusion in the long run.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To assess possible benefits of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) injection as pretreatment for macular laser photocoagulation (MLP) in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME).
METHODS: Published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) concerning MLP with or without IVTA pretreatment for DME were retrieved from databases CNKI, Medline, EMbase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. A Meta-analysis on eligible studies was conducted using RevMan 5.0 software. Two investigators independently assessed the quality of the trials and extracted data. Main outcome measures included the change in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), difference in central macular thickness (CMT) and adverse events reporting in particular elevated intraocular pressure within the follow-up period. The results were pooled using weight mean difference (WMD) or odds risk (OR) with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). A fixed- or random-effect model was employed depending on the heterogeneity of the inclusion trials.
RESULTS: Finally, five independent RCTs were identified and used for comparing MLP with IVTA pretreatment (131 eyes) with MLP alone (133 eyes, control group). The overall study quality was relatively higher according to the modified Jadad scale. The Meta-analysis showed that MLP with IVTA pretreatment significantly reduced CMT at one, three and six months (P=0.002, 0.0003 and 0.04, respectively), compared with MLP alone. The IVTA pretreatment group showed statistically significant improvements in BCVA at the one-month follow up as compared with the control group (P=0.03). At three- and six-month follow up, there was a beneficial trend towards improving visual acuity in the IVTA pretreatment group without statistical significance between groups (P=0.06 and 0.20, respectively). The incidence of elevation of intraocular pressure was significantly higher in the IVTA pretreatment group than in the control group (P<0.0001). No evidence of publication bias was present according to Begg’s test and Egger’s test. There was a low level of heterogeneity in the included studies.
CONCLUSION: This Meta-analysis indicates that MLP with IVTA pretreatment has a better therapeutic effect in terms of CMT reduction and earlier (1mo) visual improvement for patients with DME as compared with MLP alone. Further confirmation with rigorously well-designed multi-center trials is needed.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To report on intraocular pressure (IOP) after intravitreal injections of triamcinolone acetonide.
METHODS: Systematic literature review of studies that investigated the effects of an injection of triamcinolone intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide on IOP was conducted according to the Cochrane Collaboration methodology and the reported effects have been analyzed with Meta-analysis.
RESULTS: We found that the IOP follows an inverted-U shape pattern over time starting with an average value of 14.81±1.22 mm Hg before the injection, rising to a maximum of 19.48±2.15 mm Hg after one month of injection and falling down to 16.16±1.92 mm Hg after 6mo. Moreover, country of study, age, previous history of glaucoma and gender compositions matter for cross-study were different in reported IOP changes. 
CONCLUSION: Our findings may be helpful in determining pressure elevation risk of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide therapy as well as comparing it with those of more recent therapies such as the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents.

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the advantage of canaloplasty compared to trabeculectomy for patients with open angle glaucoma.
METHODS: Potentially relevant studies were systematically searched using various databases from inception until December 2015. The outcome analyses performed automatically using Revman 5.3 included intraocular pressure reduction (IOPR), postoperative success rate, anti-glaucoma medications reduction and the incidence of adverse events.
RESULTS: We included four qualified studies incorporating a total of 215 eyes for quantitative synthesis. The weighted mean difference (WMD) of IOPR between canaloplasty and trabeculectomy from baseline to 12mo was -2.33 (95%CI: -4.00, -0.66). There was not significant improvement in the complete or qualified success rate (OR: 0.58, 95%CI: 0.26, 1.31; OR: 0.50, 95%CI: 0.10, 2.44, respectively). Similarly, no statistically significance was observed in anti-glaucoma mediations reduction (WMD: -0.54, 95%CI: -1.18, 0.09). Sensitivity analysis of the primary outcome estimate confirmed the stability of the Meta-analysis result.
CONCLUSION: Trabeculectomy seems to be more effective in lowering IOP up to 12mo when comparing with canaloplasty. Canaloplasty does not seem to be inferior to trabeculectomy considering the postoperative success rate or the number of postoperative anti-glaucoma medications. Meanwhile, it has an advantage of less bleb related complications.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness changes in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), and detect possible prevalence of glaucoma in this population.
METHODS: Comprehensive studies were conducted on the Cochrane Library, PubMed and Embase through March, 2015. Only studies that fit the selection criteria about RNFL and OSAS would be included. For the measures, we calculated the 95% confidence interval (CI) and weighted mean differences (WMD). The systematic review and Meta-analysis was performed by RevMan 5.2 software.
RESULTS: Nine case-control studies were analyzed containing a total of 1086 cases and 580 controls. Average RNFL thickness in OSAS was reduced significantly compared with healthy controls in random effects model (WMD=-2.56, 95% CI: -4.82 to -0.31, P =0.003, I&sup2; =57%). A significant RNFL thickness reduction were found between the two groups in inferior quadrant (WMD=-3.11, 95% CI: -5.53 to -0.69, P=0.01), superior quadrant (WMD=-2.37, 95%CI: -4.7 to 0.04, P =0.05). In nasal quadrant (WMD=-2.54, 95% CI: -6.53 to 1.45, P =0.21) and temporal quadrant (WMD=-1.26, 95% CI: -2.19 to 0.47, P =0.15) there was no difference of RNFL thickness between the two groups.
CONCLUSION: The results show that RNFL thickness is lower in patients with moderate or severe OSAS than in normal subjects or patients with mild OSAS according to the nine homogeneity studies.]]></description>

METHODS: The PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL, last issue), CBM (Chinese BioMedical Literature Database), and CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure/Chinese Academic Journals full-text Database) were searched for eligible studies published from January 1964 to December 2015 to investigate the association of smoking with the risk of dry eye. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were summarized and calculated. The extracted studies were pooled by the fixed-effects model or a random-effects model.
RESULTS: Two cohort studies and eight cross-sectional surveys were included in our Meta-analysis. There was no statistically significant relationship between current (OR=1.32; 95% CI: 0.99-1.76; P=0.055) or ever smoking (OR=1.12; 95% CI: 0.98-1.28; P=0.107) and the risk of dry eye among the studies, even when age and gender were adjusted (OR=1.16; 95% CI: 0.83-1.64; P=0.383). In the sensitivity analysis in which only general population were included, the association was significant between smoking and dry eye (OR=1.50; 95% CI: 1.08-2.09; P=0.016).

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To quantify the association between alcohol consumption and dry eye syndrome (DES) with Meta-analysis of published case-control and cross-sectional studies.
METHODS: Three databases were screened for potentially eligible studies through Nov. 30, 2015, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. Odds ratios (ORs) were pooled with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate the relationship between alcohol consumption and DES risk. Subgroup analyses were performed according to diagnostic criteria, publication year, sample size, alcohol intake and adjusted factors.
RESULTS: A total of 10 (9 case-control and 1 cross-sectional) studies from 8 articles were included in this Meta-analysis. The pooled results showed that alcohol consumption would significantly increase the risk of DES (OR 1.15, 95% CI: 1.02-1.30), and the results were independent of smoking, hypertension, diabetes and thyroid disease history. And the results of subgroup analyses indicated an increased incidence of DES diagnosed by typical DES symptoms and positive objective tests together (OR 1.18, 95% CI: 1.01-1.39) among drinkers, but not by typical DES symptoms alone (OR 1.11, 95% CI: 0.94-1.32). What’s more, any drinkers were at higher risk of suffering from DES (OR 1.33, 95% CI: 1.31-1.34), while heavy drinkers not (OR 1.01, 95% CI: 0.86-1.18).
CONCLUSION: The present Meta-analysis suggests that alcohol consumption may be a significant risk factor for DES. Alcohol-induced peripheral neuropathymay falsely reduce the prevalence of DES among heavy drinkers. Future prospective studies of alcohol consumption and DES risk are needed to confirm our results.]]></description>

METHODS: After a systematic literature search, all relevant studies evaluating the association between the three primary mutations of LHON and visual prognosis were included. All statistical tests were calculated with Revman 5.2 and STATA 12.0.
RESULTS: Ten independent studies were included finally. A significant association between the three primary mutations and prognostic vision over 0.3 were found in G11778A versus T14484C [odds ratio (OR)=0.10, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.05-0.17, P<0.001], G11778A versus G3460A (OR=0.18, 95%CI=0.09-0.37, P<0.001) and T14484C versus G3460A (OR=2.45, 95%CI=1.10-5.48, P<0.05). In addition, obtained by pairwise comparison, the vision during onset, age of onset and sex ratio of these three kinds of patients, have no statistical significance (P>0.05).
CONCLUSION: From pairwise comparison, we conclude that these three different genotypes of LHON are related to patients’ visual prognosis. The T14484C patients might have a best prognostic vision, G3460A second, and G11778A worst. And there is little relation between the three different genotypes and patients’ vision, age of onset and sex ratio.]]></description>

METHODS: Eligible studies were retrieved from four electronic databases, including CENTRAL, Clinical Trials gov, PupMed and OVID MEDLINE. We set post-surgical maximum K value (Kmax) as the primary outcome. In addition, uncorrected and corrected distant visual acuity (UDVA and UDVA), spherical equivalent (SE), endothelial cell density (ECD), central cornea thickness (CCT) and depth of demarcation line (DDL) were Meta-analyzed as secondary outcomes. Mean differences for these outcomes were pooled through either a random-effect model or fixed-effect model according to data heterogeneity.
RESULTS: Twenty-four comparative studies either on accelerated cross-linking (AC) compared with SC or on trans-epithelial cross-linking (TC) compared with SC were included and pooled for analysis. The results indicated that MC was significantly inferior to SC at delaying Kmax deterioration [AC vs SC 0.49 (95% CI: 0.04-0.94, I2=75%, P=0.03); TC vs SC 1.15 (95% CI: 0.54-1.75, I2=50%, P=0.0002)]. SE decreased significantly for SC when compared to AC [0.62 (95% CI: 0.38-0.86, I2=22%, P<0.00001)]. DDL of SC was more significantly deeper than that of TC [-133.49 (95% CI: -145.94 to -121.04, I2=33%, P<0.00001)]. Other outcomes demonstrated comparable results between MC and SC.
CONCLUSION: SC is more favorable at halting the progression of keratoconus, but visual acuity improvement showed comparable results between MCs and SC.]]></description>

METHODS: PubMed and Embase were searched using medical subject headings and key words related to diabetes and glaucoma. The inclusion criteria were: 1) the study design was a prospective cohort study; 2) the exposure of interest was diabetes; 3) the outcome of interest was primary open angle glaucoma (POAG); 4) risk ratios (RR) and the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). Data were pooled using fixed effects models to take into account heterogeneity between studies. Seven prospective studies were selected. Diabetes increased the incidence of glaucoma by 36% (OR=1.36, 95% CI=1.25-1.50). There was no evidence of statistical heterogeneity (I2=0, P=0.53) or publication bias (the funnel plot did not identify obvious asymmetry).
RESULTS: Seven prospective cohort studies were incorporated in this Meta-analysis. The pooled RR of the association between POAG and diabetes based on the risk estimates of the seven cohort studies was 1.36 (95%CI=1.24-1.50), with no significant heterogeneity across studies (I2=0; P=0.526). The sensitivity analysis yielded a range of RRs from 1.34 (95%CI=1.22-1.48) to1.40 (95%CI=1.18-1.67).
CONCLUSION: Diabetes is associated with a significantly increased risk of glaucoma.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the possible differences in visual quality between small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) for myopia.
METHODS: A Meta-analysis was performed. Patients were from previously reported comparative studies treated with SMILE versus FS-LASIK. The PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Web of Science and Chinese databases (i.e. WANFANG and CNKI) were searched in Nov. of 2016 using RevMan 5.1 version software. The differences in visual acuity, aberration and biomechanical effects within six months postoperatively were showed. Twenty-seven studies including 4223 eyes were included.
RESULTS: No significant differences were observed between SMILE and FS-LASIK in terms of the proportion of eyes that lost one or more lines of corrected distance visual acuity after surgery (P=0.14), the proportion of eyes achieving an uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/20 or better (P=0.43), the final refractive spherical equivalent (P=0.89), the refractive spherical equivalent within ±1.00 diopter of the target values (P=0.80), vertical coma (P=0.45) and horizontal coma (P=0.06). Compared with the FS-LASIK group, total higher-order aberration (P<0.001) and spherical aberration (P<0.001) were higher and the decrease in corneal hysteresis (P=0.0005) and corneal resistance factor (P=0.02) were lower in the SMILE group.
CONCLUSION: SMILE and FS-LASIK are comparable in efficacy, safety and predictability for correcting myopia. However, the aberration in the SMILE group is superior to that in the FS-LASIK group, and the loss of biomechanical effects may occur less frequently after SMILE than after FS-LASIK.]]></description>

METHODS: A systematic review and Meta-analysis was performed of all published studies pertaining to prevalence of ROP using international and national electronic databases (ISI Web of Sciences, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, SID, MagIran, and IranMedex) from their inception until May 2016 with standard keywords. Begg and Egger tests were used to examine the publication bias and Cochran test and I2 statistics were used to evaluate the statistical heterogeneity. Pooled estimate of the prevalence of ROP were calculated using random effects Meta-analysis.
RESULTS: The publication bias assumption was rejected by Egger tests with P-value equal to 0.024. The results of Cochran test and I2 statistics revealed substantial heterogeneity (Q=1099.02, df=25, I2=97.7%, P=0.001). The overall prevalence of ROP using the random effect model in Iran was 26.1% (95% CI: 20.3%-31.8%).
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of ROP is relatively high in Iran. Low birth weight and gestational age are significant risk factors for the disease. Improved care, including oxygen delivery and monitoring, for preterm babies in all facility settings would reduce the number of babies affected with ROP.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) combined with photodynamic therapy (PDT) versus anti-VEGF monotherapy for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV).
METHODS: We conducted a Meta-analysis of 9 studies to compare the efficacy and safety between combined therapy and anti-VEGF monotherapy for PCV. The programs of RevMan 5.3 and Stata 12.0 were used to analyze data.
RESULTS: The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in combined therapy group were significantly better than those of anti-VEGF monotherapy group at 6, 24 and 36mo, with pooled weighted means differences (WMDs) of 0.12 (0.06, 0.18), 0.25 (0.12, 0.38) and 0.28 (0.13, 0.43), respectively. The central retinal thickness (CRT) reductions in combined therapy group were higher than that in anti-VEGF monotherapy group at 1, 3, 6 and 9mo, with pooled WMDs of 63.90 (20.41, 107.38), 33.47 (4.69, 62.24), 30.57 (0.12, 60.01) and 28.00 (2.51, 53.49), respectively. The regression rate of polyps in combined therapy group was much higher than that in anti-VEGF monotherapy group [RD: 0.47 (0.26, 0.68); P<0.0001]. The adverse event retinal hemorrhage did not differ significantly between the two groups.
CONCLUSION: Our findings clearly document that anti-VEGF combined with PDT is a more effective therapy for PCV compared with anti-VEGF monotherapy. Furthermore, combined therapy does not increase the incidence of retinal hemorrhage.]]></description>

METHODS: A systematic review and quantitative Meta-analysis was performed. PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane database were searched for eligible literatures published in English until June 2016. The endpoint was recurrence rate and pooled risk ratio (RR) was calculated.
RESULTS: Nine eligible studies were included and Meta-analysis results showed no significantly difference in patients treated with bevacizumab in short term follow-up [3mo: RR=0.70 (0.34, 1.45); 6mo: RR=0.55 (0.23, 1.32)] compared with control groups. No significant effects were observed in favor of bevacizumab in subgroup analyses: patients with subconjunctival injection of bevacizumab [3mo: RR=0.95 (0.70, 1.29); 6mo: RR=0.83 (0.55, 1.28)], primary pterygium [3mo: RR=0.59 (0.23, 1.54; 6mo: RR=0.59 (0.23, 1.53)], simple pterygium excision [3mo: 0.32 (0.05, 2.04), P=0.23; 6mo: 0.27 (0.05, 1.53)] and excision with conjunctival autograft [3mo: 1.51 (0.25, 9.15); 6mo: 1.11 (0.06, 21.69)].
CONCLUSION: In this Meta-analysis, we did not found the significant effect of bevacizumab in pterygium treatment, at least in short term follow-up (3mo and 6mo).]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To compare the therapeutic effect and safety of laser photocoagulation along with intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) versus laser therapy in treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME).
METHODS: Pertinent publications were identified through comprehensive searches of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov to identify randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing IVR+laser to laser monotherapy in patients with DME. Therapeutic effect estimates were determined by weighted mean differences (WMD) of change from baseline in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central retinal thickness (CRT) at 6, 12, or 24mo after initial treatment, and the risk ratios (RR) for the proportions of patients with at least 10 letters of improvement or reduction at 12mo. Data regarding major ocular and nonocular adverse events (AEs) were collected and analyzed. The Review Manager 5.3.5 was used.
RESULTS: Six RCTs involving 2069 patients with DME were selected for this Meta-analysis. The results showed that IVR+laser significantly improved BCVA compared with laser at 6mo (WMD: 6.57; 95% CI: 4.37-8.77; P<0.00001), 12mo (WMD: 5.46; 95% CI: 4.35-6.58; P<0.00001), and 24mo (WMD: 3.42; 95% CI: 0.84-5.99; P=0.009) in patients with DME. IVR+laser was superior to laser in reducing CRT at 12mo from baseline with statistical significance (WMD: -63.46; 95% CI: -101.19 to -25.73; P=0.001). The pooled RR results showed that the proportions of patients with at least 10 letters of improvement or reduction were in favor of IVR+laser arms compared with laser (RR: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.77-2.57; P<0.00001 and RR: 0.37; 95% CI: 0.22-0.62; P=0.0002, respectively). As for AEs, the pooled results showed that a significantly higher proportion of patients suffering from conjunctival hemorrhage (study eye) and diabetic retinal edema (fellow eye) in IVR+laser group compared to laser group (RR: 3.29; 95% CI: 1.53-7.09; P=0.002 and RR: 3.02; 95% CI: 1.24-7.32; P=0.01, respectively). The incidence of other ocular and nonocular AEs considered in this Meta-analysis had no statistical difference between IVR+laser and laser alone.
CONCLUSION: The results of our analysis show that IVR+laser has better availability in functional (improving BCVA) and anatomic (reducing CRT) outcomes than laser monotherapy for the treatment of DME. However, the patients who received the treatment of IVR+laser may get a higher risk of suffering from conjunctival hemorrhage (study eye) and diabetic retinal edema (fellow eye).]]></description>

<title xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="text"><![CDATA[Prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in Iran: a systematic review and Meta-analysis]]></title>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To estimate the overall prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in Iran by a systematic review and Meta-analysis.
METHODS: We conducted a search of all published literature on diabetic patients for the prevalence of DR using Web of Sciences, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and national electronic databases SID, Magiran, and Iranmedex from their inception until September 2016 with standard keywords. Pooled estimates of the DR prevalence and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using random effects models.
RESULTS: Thirty-one studies involving 23 729 patients with type I and II diabetes were included. The publication bias assumption for prevalence of DR was rejected by Begg and Egger tests (P=0.825, P=0.057, respectively). The results of Cochran test and I2 statistics showed considerable heterogeneity for prevalence of DR (Q=1278.21, d.f.=30, P<0.001 and I2=97.7%). The prevalence of DR, non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) in Iranian diabetic patients were 41.9% (95% CI: 35.6-48.2), 32.2% (95% CI: 28.7-35.8), and 13.2% (95% CI: 8.3-18.1), respectively.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of DR in Iran appears a little high. NPDR was more common. This study highlights the necessity for DR screening and management in diabetic patients in Iran.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To assess the corneal sensitivity and the incidences of dry eye after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK).
METHODS: The Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3. We searched on PubMed from inception to March 2016. Summary weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to analyze the datum. Random-effects or fixed-effects models were chosen up to between-study heterogeneity. The main outcomes were composed of the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores, tear film break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer Test and corneal sensitivity.
RESULTS: Eight eligible studies including 772 eyes (386 in SMILE group and 386 in FS-LASIK group) were identified. The parameters have no significiant difference heterogeneity between SMILE and FS-LASIK group preoperatively. There were significant differences between the two groups in OSDI scores at one and three months postoperatively, in TBUT at one and three months postoperatively, in corneal sensitivity at one week, about one month and three months postoperatively. However, there was no significant difference observed in Schirmer Test at the follow-up periods.
CONCLUSION: Compare to FS-LASIK, dry eye and the corneal sensitivity recover better in the SMILE group, in first three months after the surgery.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To investigate the association of Manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) Val16Ala polymorphism with diabetic retinopathy (DR).
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang databases were searched. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to evaluate the strength of the association. Subgroup, sensitivity, and cumulative analyses were performed. Publication bias was also analyzed.
RESULTS: Eight studies were included in the pooled analysis. The MnSOD Val16Ala polymorphism was associated with the risk of DR under the dominant model (OR=0.66, 95%CI=0.48-0.91, P<0.0001), this result was demonstrated to be relatively stable in cumulative analysis. No significant publication bias was found. This polymorphism was also associated with the risk of DR in Caucasians under the dominant model (OR=0.64, 95%CI=0.42-0.97, P=0.04,) and in Asians under the recessive model (OR=0.31, 95%CI=0.11-0.88, P=0.03).
CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the MnSOD Val16Ala polymorphism is a risk factor for DR, and that more attention should be paid to carriers of these susceptibility genes.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To determine the association between retinal vasculature changes and stroke.
METHODS: MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched for relevant human studies to September 2015 that investigated the association between retinal vasculature changes and the prevalence or incidence of stroke; the studies were independently examined for their qualities. Data on clinical characteristics and calculated summary odds ratios (ORs) were extracted for associations between retinal microvascular abnormalities and stroke, including stroke subtypes where possible, and adjusted for key variables.
RESULTS: Nine cases were included in the study comprising 20 659 patients, 1178 of whom were stroke patients. The retinal microvascular morphological markers used were hemorrhage, microaneurysm, vessel caliber, arteriovenous nicking, and fractal dimension. OR of retinal arteriole narrowing and retinal arteriovenous nicking and stroke was 1.42 and 1.91, respectively, indicating that a small-caliber retinal arteriole and retinal arteriovenous nicking were associated with stroke. OR of retinal hemorrhage and retinal microaneurysm and stroke was 3.21 and 3.83, respectively, indicating that retinal microvascular lesions were highly associated with stroke. Results also showed that retinal fractal dimension reduction was associated with stroke (OR: 2.28 for arteriole network, OR: 1.80 for venular network).
CONCLUSION: Retinal vasculature changes have a specific relationship to stroke, which is promising evidence for the prediction of stroke using computerized retinal vessel analysis.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To examine differences in efficacy, accuracy, safety, aberrations and corneal biomechanical between Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond lenticule extraction (FLEx) for myopia.
METHODS: Comprehensive studies were conducted on the PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Controlled Trials Register before 31 July, 2015. Meta-analyses were performed on the primary outcomes [loss of ≥2 lines of corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) ≥20/20, spherical equivalent (SE) within ±0.50 diopters (D), final refractive SE], secondary outcomes were high-order aberrations (HOAs) and corneal biomechanical [central corneal thickness (CCT), corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF)].
RESULTS: Seven trials describing a total of 320 eyes with myopia were included in this Meta-analysis. No significant differences were found in the efficacy [UDVA weighted mean difference (WMD) -0.01; 95%CI: -0.04 to 0.01; P=0.37, UDVA ≥20/20, OR 1.49; 95%CI: 0.78 to 2.86; P=0.23], accuracy (SE WMD -0.03; 95%CI: -0.12 to 0.07; P=0.58 , SE within ±0.5 D OR 1.25; 95%CI: 0.34 to 4.65; P=0.74), HOAs (WMD -0.04; 95%CI: -0.09 to 0.01; P=0.14) and CCT WMD 1.83; 95%CI: -7.07 to 10.72; P=0.69, CH WMD -0.01; 95%CI: -0.42 to 0.40; P=0.97, CRF WMD 0.17; 95%CI: -0.33 to 0.67; P=0.50) in the last fellow-up. But for safety, FLEx may achieve fewer CDVA lost two or more two lines (OR 11.11; 95%CI: 1.27 to 96.86; P=0.03) than SMILE, however CDVA (WMD 0.00; 95%CI: -0.03 to 0.02; P=0.77) is similar.
CONCLUSION: SMILE and FLEx are comparable in terms of both efficacy, accuracy, aberrations and corneal biomechanical measures in the follow-up，but FLEx seems to be better in safety measures. The results should be interpreted cautiously since relevant evidence is still limited, although it is accumulating. Further large-scale, well-designed randomized controlled trials are urgently needed.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the effect of cataract surgery on sleep quality and to compare the difference between ultraviolet-blocking clear intraocular lens (UVB-IOL) and blue-filtering intraocular lens (BF-IOL) implantation.
METHODS: Electronic search was performed of PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase and the Cochrane Library up to January 2016. Studies were eligible when they evaluated the sleep quality before and after cataract surgery by Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). A random/fixed-effects Meta-analysis was used for the pooled estimate. Heterogeneity was assessed with the I2 test.
RESULTS: Six studies were selected from 5623 references. Cataract surgery significantly reduced the PSQI scores at postoperative 0-3mo [mean difference (MD) =-0.62, 95%CI: -1.14 to -0.11, P=0.02, I2=66%] and 3-12mo (MD=-0.32, 95%CI: -0.62 to -0.02, P=0.04, I2=0), respectively. Considering different intraocular lens (IOL) implantations, relative post-operative PSQI reduction was found for both UVB-IOL and BF-IOL, but a significant reduction was detected only for UVB-IOL. No significant difference was found with the effect of BF-IOL vs UVB-IOL on sleep quality.
CONCLUSION: This study found that cataract surgery significantly improved the PSQI score-derived subjective sleep quality irrespective of the IOL type implanted. These findings highlight a substantial benefit of cataract surgery on systemic health with photoreceptive restoration in addition to visual acuity improvements.]]></description>

METHODS: PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were searched for relevant human studies, which investigated the prediction of the postoperative visual recovery of patients with pituitary adenoma, from January 2000 to May 2017. Meta-analyses were performed on the primary outcomes. After the related data were extracted by two independent investigators, pooled weighted mean difference (WMD) and odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated using a random-effects or a fixed-effects model.
RESULTS: Nineteen studies were included in the literature review, and nine trials were included in the Meta-analysis, which comprised 530 patients (975 eyes) with pituitary adenoma. For the primary outcomes, there was a significant difference between preoperative and postoperative mean deviation (MD) values of the visual field (WMD -5.85; 95%CI: -8.19 to -3.51; P<0.00001). Predictive characteristics of four factors were revealed in this Meta-analysis by assigning the patients to sufficient and insufficient groups according to postoperative visual field improvements, including preoperative visual field defect (WMD 10.09; 95%CI: 6.17 to 14.02; P<0.00001), patient age (WMD -12.32; 95%CI: -18.42 to -6.22; P<0.0001), symptom duration (WMD -5.04; 95%CI: -9.71 to -0.37; P=0.03), and preoperative peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness (OR 0.1; 95% CI: 0.04 to 0.23; P<0.00001).
CONCLUSION: Preoperative visual field defect, symptom duration, patient age, and preoperative pRNFL thickness are the dominant predictive factors of the postoperative recovery of the visual field for patients with pituitary adenoma.]]></description>

METHODS: We searched for clinical trials published up to November 2015 without language or region restrictions in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Ovid, EBSCO, Elsevier, the Chinese Biomedicine Database, WanFang, CNKI, CQVIP and Google Scholar. Studies of the ocular changes observed in pregnant women were selected. The main outcomes were assessed by changes in IOP and CCT.
RESULTS: Fifteen studies were included. In subgroup analyses, IOP was significantly decreased during the second MD=-1.53, 95%CI (-2.19, -0.87); P<0.00001, and third MD=-2.91, 95%CI (-3.74, -2.08); P<0.00001 trimesters of pregnancy. CCT was increased during the second MD=10.12, 95%CI (2.01, 18.22); P=0.01, trimester of pregnancy; moreover, during the third trimester of pregnancy, the CCT displayed an increasing trend, but the difference was not significant MD=5.98, 95%CI (-1.11, 13.07); P=0.1.
CONCLUSION: A decrease in IOP is accompanied by an increase in CCT in the second and third trimesters of a normal pregnancy in women.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the relative efficacy and safety of aflibercept for treatment of diabetic macular oedema (DMO).
METHODS: A comprehensive search in MEDLINE, CENTRAL and EMBASE was undertaken for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) versus another treatment. Primary outcome measures were proportion of patients with at least 15 letters of gain or loss on a logMAR visual acuity chart, and change in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central macular thickness (CMT) from baseline. Safety outcomes were rates of death, thromboembolic events and any systemic or ocular serious adverse events. The final search was performed on November 2017.
RESULTS: Four RCTs were included. Only one trial compared efficacy and safety of aflibercept with bevacizumab and ranibizumab over 1 or 2y. Three trials were included for Meta-analysis comprising 661 patients (331 in the aflibercept, and 330 in the photocoagulation group). Aflibercept was more efficacious compared to photocoagulation in the proportion of patients with at least 15 letters of improvement and worsening, and in improvement of BCVA and reduction in CMT at 1 or 2y. The safety estimates at 1 or 2y did not differ statistically.
CONCLUSION: Aflibercept offers superior benefits over photocoagulation in improving and preserving vision, with no differences in safety. Further comparative effectiveness trials between aflibercept and other anti-VEGF agents will aid ophthalmologists in treatment decisions.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To compare a trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) and a bifocal IOL implantation in improving visual function after cataract surgery.
METHODS: Eligible literatures were systematically searched through EMBASE and PubMed databases. The inclusion criteria were prospective comparative clinical trials on cataract surgery comparing trifocal IOL with bifocal IOL implantation that assessed visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and subjective vision quality. The effects were computed as standardized mean differences and pooled using fixed-effect or random-effect models.
RESULTS: Four prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and five cohorts provided data were included by a systematic review, comprising 265 eyes implanted with trifocal IOLs and 264 eyes implanted with bifocal IOLs. Monocular distance visual acuity (VA) showed a statistically significant but small difference that favored trifocal IOLs (MD=-0.06; 95%CI, -0.10 to -0.02; Z=2.90, P=0.004 for uncorrected distance VA, and MD= -0.02; 95%CI, -0.03 to -0.00; Z=2.02, P=0.04 for corrected distance VA), but the data did not suggest that the effect of trifocal IOL implantation would clinically outperform bifocal IOL implantation. There was no significant difference in monocular near VA (MD=-0.01; 95%CI, -0.07 to 0.04; Z=0.42, P=0.68 for distance-corrected near VA, and MD=-0.01; 95%CI, -0.06 to 0.03; Z=0.55, P=0.58 for corrected near VA) or refraction between two groups. Contrast sensitivity and subjective visual quality had no conclusive results.
CONCLUSION: All results indicate that trifocal IOL and bifocal IOL had similar levels of monocular distance and near VA.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To conduct a systematic review and quantitative Meta-analysis of the efficacy and safety of combined surgery for the eyes with coexisting cataract and open angle glaucoma.
METHODS: We performed a systematic search of the related literature in the Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science databases, CNKI, CBM and Wan Fang databases, with no limitations on language or publication date. The primary efficacy estimate was identified by weighted mean difference of the percentage of intraocular pressure reduction (IOPR%) from baseline to end-point, the percentage of number of glaucoma medications reduction from pre- to post-operation, and the secondary efficacy evaluations were performed by odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for complete and qualified success rate. Besides, ORs were applied to assess the tolerability of adverse incidents. Meta-analyses of fixed or random effect models were performed using RevMan software 5.2 to gather the consequences. Heterogeneity was evaluated by Chi2 test and the I2 measure.
RESULTS: Ten studies enrolling 3108 patients were included. The combined consequences indicated that both glaucoma and combined cataract and glaucoma surgery significantly decreased IOP. For deep sclerectomy vs deep sclerectomy plus phacoemulsification and canaloplasty vs phaco-canaloplasty, the differences in IOPR% were not all statistically significant while trabeculotomy was detected to gain a quantitatively greater IOPR% compared with trabeculotomy plus phacoemulsification. Furthermore, there was no statistical significance in the complete and qualified success rate, and the rates of adverse incidents for trabeculotomy vs trabeculotomy plus phacoemulsification.
CONCLUSION: Compared with trabeculotomy plus phacoemulsification, trabeculectomy alone is more effective in lowering IOP and the number of glaucoma medications, while the two surgeries can not demonstrate statistical differences in the complete success rate, qualified success rate, or incidence of adverse incidents.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To clarify this controversy and to provide evidence for application of lipid lowering agents in treatment of diabetic retinopathy (DR).
METHODS: We searched the databases of PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) and abstracts from main annual meetings up to January 1, 2017. Google scholar and ClinicalTrials.gov were also searched for unpublished relevant studies. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that studied lipid-lowering agents in type 1 or type 2 diabetes in this Meta-analysis. The primary endpoint was the progression of DR, and the secondary endpoints included vision loss, development of diabetic macular edema (DME) and aggravation of hard exudates. The pooled odds ratios (OR) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were calculated.
RESULTS: After systemic and manual literature search by two independent investigators, we included 8 RCTs from 7 published articles with 13 454 participants in this Meta-analysis. The results revealed that lipid-lowering drugs were associated with reduced risk in DR progression [OR=0.77 (95%CI: 0.62, 0.96), P=0.02]. Lipid-lowering agents might have protective effect on DME compared to placebo, although the difference was not statistically significant [OR=0.60 (95%CI: 0.34, 1.08), P=0.09]. However, no significant differences in the worsening of vision acuity [OR=0.96 (95%CI: 0.81,1.14), P=0.64] and hard exudates [OR=0.50 (95%CI:0.15, 1.74), P=0.28] were found between the lipid-lowering drugs and the placebo groups.
CONCLUSION: In DR patients, lipid-lowering agents show a protective effect on DR progression and might be associated with reduced risk in the development of DME. However, lipid-lowering agents have no effects on vision loss and hard exudates aggravation. Further clinical trials in larger scale are required to confirm the conclusion of this study and thus justify the use of intensive control lipids with anti-lipid agents at the early stages of DR.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To assess the association between endogenous cortisol level and the risk of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC).
METHODS: Case-control studies were systematically searched on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) for publishes between January 1990 and July 2017 to assess the association between endogenous cortisol level and CSC. The main endpoints were serum cortisol level at 8 a.m. and 24-hour urine 17-hydroxysteroids level. We assessed pooled data using a random-effects model.
RESULTS: Of 86 identified studies, 5 were eligible included in our analysis. The 5 studies included a total of 315 participants, of whom 187 had CSC. Statistically significant association was observed between serum cortisol level (summary SMD=0.77, 95%CI=0.55-0.99), 24-hour urine 17-hydroxysteroids level (summary SMD=0.95, 95%CI=0.61-1.30), and the risk of CSC.
CONCLUSION: Endogenous cortisol level is associated with an increased risk of CSC. Combined treatment targeting the serum cortisol level at 8 a.m. and 24-hour urine 17-hydroxysteroids level can be a potential preventive strategy for individuals who are at risk of CSC and therapeutic strategy for patients with CSC.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To compare the effectiveness of unilateral recession- resection (R&R) and bilateral/unilateral recession (BLR/ULR) for treatment of basic type of intermittent exotropia [IX(T)].
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library, to identify randomized controlled trials and comparative studies regarding the effectiveness of R&R and BLR/ULR for IX(T). Based on which, a Meta-analysis was then performed in terms of long-term success rate, overcorrection rate, and recurrence rate.
RESULTS: Nine studies in total satisfy the specified eligibility criteria. BLR is at disadvantage to R&R at a short-term follow-up [<2y, OR 0.56 (0.33-0.94) for success rate; OR 2.11 (1.17, 3.81) for undercorrection rate]. However, BLR achieved a higher success rate [OR 2.49 (1.61, 3.86)] and a lower undercorrection rate [OR 0.40 (0.23, 0.71)], compared to that of R&R at a long-term follow-up (>2y). There is no significant difference was found in overcorrection rate, regardless of the length of follow-up time [OR 0.85 (0.41, 1.75)]. In the treatment for small-angle IX(T), the final outcome was significantly different between the groups, demonstrating a more successful alignment [OR 0.37 (0.18, 0.74)] and a lower undercorrection [OR 3.50 (1.28, 7.26)] in the R&R group than in the ULR group. While for moderate-angle IX(T) (20 PD-25 PD), the effectiveness of R&R and ULR is quite equivalent with similar success rate [OR 1.08 (0.65, 1.79)] and undercorrection rate [OR 0.89 (0.54, 1.48)].
CONCLUSION: As regard to the effect of BLR and R&R, R&R shows an advantage over BLR at short term. But, BLR is more effective in the long term for the basic type IX(T) in children. R&R surgery should be a better choice for the treatment of small-angle IX(T) of ≤20 PD than ULR. However, both of ULR and R&R are recommended for moderate-angle IX(T) from 20 PD to 25 PD.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling for diabetic macular edema (DME).
METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, SionMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, CNKI databases and Wanfang databases, published until Oct. 2017, were searched to identify studies comparing the clinical outcomes following vitrectomy with and without ILM peeling, for treating DME. Pooled results were expressed as odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) for vitrectomy with and without ILM peeling with regard to best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), and complication incidents.
RESULTS: A total of 14 studies involving 857 eyes were included of which three studies were Chinese and the rests were English literatures. Meta-analysis indicated that compared with vitrectomy alone, vitrectomy with ILM peeling could improve BCVA more obviously (OR=1.66, 95%CI: 1.12-2.46, P=0.01) and had higher rate of CMT reduction (OR=3.89, 95%CI: 1.37-11.11, P=0.01). There were significant statistical differences between the two surgical methods for both BCVA and CMT (P<0.05). For the incidence of intraoperative and postoperative complications, the incidence of epiretinal membrane (ERM) was slightly lower in the ILM peeling group than the group without ILM peeling (OR=0.38, 95%CI: 0.07-2.00, P=0.25), although insigni?cant statistically. Other incidences of overall complications, iatrogenic peripheral retinal break and increased intraocular pressure indicated no significant difference between two groups (OR=1.19, 95%CI: 0.82-1.73, P=0.36; OR=1.21, 95%CI: 0.66-2.21, P=0.53; OR=1.34, 95%CI: 0.75-2.40, P=0.32).
CONCLUSION: Vitrectomy is effective for DME and the effect can be improved by additional ILM peeling, especially for anatomical efficacy, without increasing the incidence of intraoperative and postoperative complications. However, it is imperative to gain more evaluation in the future due to the paucity of prospective randomized study.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of intravitreal injection of conbercept (IVC) and ranibizumab (IVR) in patients with diabetic macular edema.
METHODS: Reviewers have searched 12 databases, including PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science, Springer, ScienceDirect, OVID, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials.gov, cqVIP, WanFangdata and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), up to December 28, 2018. RevMan 5.3 (Cochrane Library Software, Oxford, UK) was employed for statistical analysis. Fixed and random effects models were applied to assess heterogeneity. Odds ratio (OR) was applied for dichotomous variables; weighted mean difference (WMD) was applied for continuous variables. The confidence interval (CI) was set at 95%. Central macular thickness (CMT) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were employed to analyze the improvement of DME patients. Inclusion criteria for picking out studies were retrospective studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared IVC and IVR for the treatment of diabetic macular edema.
RESULTS: Four retrospective studies and five RCTs were included with a total of 609 patients. No statistically significant difference was observed in mean CMT and mean BCVA in the baseline parameters [BCVA (WMD: -0.48; 95%CI: -1.06 to 0.10; P=0.1), CMT (WMD: -0.83; 95%CI: -15.15 to 13.49; P=0.91). No significant difference was found in the improvement of BCVA and adverse event (AE) in IVC group, compared with IVR group after treatment of loading dosage [the 1st month BCVA (WMD: 0.01; 95%CI: -0.26 to 0.27; P=0.96), the 3rd month BCVA (WMD: -0.04; 95%CI: -0.14 to 0.06; P=0.46); the 6th month BCVA (WMD: -0.24; 95%CI: -1.62 to 1.14; P=0.73)], AE (OR: 0.84; 95%CI: 0.38 to 1.84; P=0.66)]. A slight difference was found in the effectiveness rate (OR: 1.70; 95%CI: 0.97 to 2.96; P=0.06), There were statistically significant differences between IVC and IVR treatment in terms of CMT [1st month CMT (WMD: -19.88; 95%CI: -27.94 to -11.82; P<0.001), 3rd month CMT (WMD: -23.31; 95%CI: -43.30 to -3.33; P=0.02), 6th month CMT (WMD: -74.74; 95%CI: -106.22 to -43.26; P<0.001)].
CONCLUSION: Pooled evidence suggests that both IVC and IVR are effective in the therapy of diabetic macular edema and affirms that IVC presents superiority over IVR therapy in regard of CMT in patients with diabetic macular edema, but no statistically significant difference with regard to visual improvement. Relevant RCTs with longer-term follow-up are necessary to back up our conclusion.]]></description>

METHODS: We searched for relevant studies in the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Ovid, CBM, CNKI, VIP and Wan Fang Data in Chinese. A supplementary search was conducted in OpenGrey (System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe), the ISRCTN registry, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP) from the dates of inception to  June 30, 2018.
RESULTS: Seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with a total of 1079 subjects were included (505 in the atropine 0.01% group and 574 in the control group). The results showed that the atropine 0.01% group exhibited significantly greater control of axial growth than the control group [MD=-0.12, 95%CI (-0.19, -0.06)]. There was also a statistically significant difference between the atropine 0.01% and control groups in the changes in axial length [MD=-0.14, 95%CI (-0.25, -0.03)], but the quality of evidence was low. There were no significant differences between the atropine 0.01% and control groups in the overall effect with respect to diopter value, change in diopter, distance vision and intraocular pressure [MD=0.08, 95%CI (-0.27, 0.42); MD=0.09, 95%CI (-0.17, 0.36); MD= -0.01, 95%CI (-0.02, 0.00); MD=0.08, 95%CI (-0.56,0.40)]. The sensitivity analysis showed that the conclusion of the Meta-analysis is relatively stable. With respect to adverse events, there were significant differences between the atropine 0.01% and control groups [OR=0.26, 95%CI (0.11, 0.61)].
CONCLUSION: Based on the available evidence, atropine 0.01% eye drops offer benefits in controlling axial growth and safety without causing significant differences in diopter values, distance vision and intraocular pressure.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the benefit and harms of high-dose intravenous glucocorticoids (IVGC) as first-line treatment for Graves’ ophthalmopathy (GO).
METHODS: A systematic review and Meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing IVGC for the treatment of GO, with placebo or other treatments, were conducted. Electronic databases were searched, and standard methodological guidance of Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions was used. The primary outcome was overall response, and secondary outcomes included the improvement and change in clinical activity score (CAS), and adverse events.
RESULTS: Ten RCTs were included in the Meta-analysis. Low quality evidence (one trial) showed that participants receiving IVGC achieved significantly higher response compared to participants receiving placebo [risk ratio (RR) 7.50, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.14 to 49.26]. Moderate quality evidence (four trials) support appreciable benefit of IVGC in response compared with oral glucocorticoids (OGC), with of RR being 1.51 (95%CI 1.25 to 1.83). There was low quality evidence (one trial) compatible with appreciable benefit for IVGC plus orbital radiotherapy in response (RR 1.38, 95%CI 1.07 to 1.79), compared with OGC plus orbital radiotherapy. One IVGC versus rituximab trial provided moderate quality evidence suggesting that participants using IVGC achieved significantly lower response compared to participants using rituximab (RR 0.70, 95%CI 0.50 to 0.98). One IVGC versus mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) trial provided moderate quality evidence suggesting that participants using IVGC achieved significantly lower response compared to participants using MMF (RR 0.74, 95%CI 0.63 to 0.88). Very low quality evidence (one trial) showed that participants with dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) receiving IVGC were more likely to achieve response compared to participants receiving orbital decompression (RR 3.33, 95%CI 0.51 to 21.89).
CONCLUSION: The current evidence is moderate quality, which is sufficient to support IVGC to be as the first-line treatment for moderate-to-severe GO, and the use of rituximab or MMF to be the second-line treatment instead of IVGC. However, the evidence is very low quality, which is insufficient to support the use of IVGC or orbital decompression as the first-line treatment of DON.]]></description>

<title xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="text"><![CDATA[Prevalence of amblyopia in congenital blepharoptosis: a systematic review and Meta-analysis]]></title>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To conduct a systematic review and Meta-analysis of the published literature to evaluate the pooled prevalence rate of amblyopia in patients with congenital ptosis.
METHODS: We searched the PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, and Chongqing VIP databases for studies reporting the prevalence of amblyopia in patients with congenital ptosis. The reference lists of relevant studies were scanned. Heterogeneity of effect sizes across studies was tested. We calculated prevalence ratios to compare prevalence estimates for different causes of amblyopia in patients with congenital ptosis, as well as for different geographical regions, year of publication and sample size in subgroup analyses. A systematic review and Meta-analysis were performed.
RESULTS: We identified 29 eligible surveys with a total population of 2436. Prevalence rates of amblyopia ranged from 13.8% to 69%. We noted substantial heterogeneity in prevalence estimates for amblyopia in congenital ptosis (Cochran’s χ2 significant at P<0.0001; I2=90%). The pooled prevalence using random-effects models of 29 studies was 32.8% (95%CI: 27.3%-38.4%) in the overall population. Compared to the overall pooled prevalence, amblyopia prevalence was higher in studies in which only subjects with blepharophimosis syndrome were included.
CONCLUSION: We confirm that nearly one-third of congenital ptosis patients are suffering from or at risk for amblyopia. Patients with blepharophimosis syndrome are more likely to develop amblyopia. The identification and management of amblyopia should be integral to the treatment of congenital ptosis.]]></description>

AIM: To evaluate the relative efficacy and safety of besifloxacin for treatment of acute bacterial conjunctivitis.
METHODS: A comprehensive search in PubMed, EMBASE Web of Science, Cochrane Central Database and CNKI was undertaken for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing besifloxacin with other treatments or placebo. The primary outcome measures were clinical resolution, rates of bacterial eradication, individual clinical outcomes, cure rates, and bacterial eradication rates of different kinds of pathogens. Safety outcomes were the number of adverse effects (AEs). The final search was performed on August 2018.
RESULTS: Eight RCTs were included. Five studies compared the efficacy and safety of besifloxacin with placebo, 2 studies compared besifloxacin with moxifloxacin, and 1 study compared besifloxacin with gatifloxacin. A total of 3105 patients met the inclusion criteria. Besifloxacin presented higher efficacy and safety than did placebo in clinical resolution, rates of bacterial eradication, individual clinical outcomes, cure rates, bacterial eradication rates of different kinds of pathogens and the number of AEs. There was no significant difference between besifloxacin and moxifloxacin or gatifloxacin in the comparison items mentioned above.
CONCLUSION: Besifloxacin is highly effective and safe for treatment of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Further comparative trials regarding the effect of besifloxacin for treatment of acute bacterial conjunctivitis will aid in treatment decisions.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To compare the benefits and potential harms of routine phacoemulsification (phaco) alone and combined surgery with goniosynechialysis (GSL) for angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) and coexisting lens opacity, as shown in different randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted searching several databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, ClinicalTrials.gov from the inception to September 2018 for RCTs with data published on the effects and safety of phaco and intraocular lens implantation combined with GSL or routine cataract surgery alone. Several studies were recruited which reported data at baselines and postoperative follow-up, including the mean values of postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) and mean numbers of anti-glaucoma medications using postoperatively. The numbers of complications happening were also included. Fixed-effect and random-effect models were applied, and the quality of evidence was evaluated.
RESULTS: Analysis of the seven included RCTs, with a total number of 321 participants (358 eyes) diagnosed with ACG and cataract, received a solo procedure (phaco group) or a combined surgery (phaco-GSL group) randomly, and follow-up periods ranging from 2 to 12mo postoperatively. The involved studies showed that the mean value of IOP between the two groups at 3 (four studies, one study follow-up at 2mo postoperative was included), 6, 12mo postoperative were not significantly different. Only two studies reported the change in IOP value at 12mo compared with baseline but showed no significant differences between the two interventions. Although three studies did not have the significant difference in the number of medications using to reduce IOP at 3mo postoperatively, two studies reported that the participants using fewer anti-glaucoma medications at 12mo postoperative in the phaco group than in the phaco-GSL surgery group.
CONCLUSION: The analysis provides a low to moderate-quality evidence that phaco-GSL surgery lead to an equivalent IOP-lowering effect. The phaco-GSL surgery may not help patients to reduce the consumption of anti-glaucoma eyedrops in the long period. The results of this analysis suggested that additional GSL may not be necessary for primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) patients. Further studies, especially RCTs with more participants and longer follow-up time were needed to provide more sufficient data.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To perform a Meta-analysis to explore the correlation between metabolic syndrome and intraocular pressure (IOP).
METHODS: We searched PubMed and Embase in November 2017 for studies discussing the relationship between metabolic syndrome components and IOP in patients. Pearson correlation coefficients, odds ratios and standardized betas were extracted from inclusive studies. Heterogeneity and publication bias were checked.
RESULTS: Of 295 articles, 10 met inclusion criteria and provided sufficient data for Meta-analysis. Results showed a significant positive relation between metabolic syndrome and IOP (Z=0.47, 95%CI: 0.15-0.79, P=0.005). The five components [waist circumference, hypertriglyceridemia, high blood pressure, high fasting glucose and low high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol] of metabolic syndrome all showed positive correlation with IOP except the low HDL-cholesterol which had no statistical significance. The pooled Z was 0.08 (95%CI: 0.04-0.12), 0.16 (95%CI: 0.11-0.21), 0.16 (95%CI: 0.10-0.22), 0.30 (95%CI: 0.20-0.40) and 0.12 (95%CI: 0.08-0.16), respectively. Begg’s test and Egger’s test showed no evidence of significant publication bias of this Meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that metabolic syndrome and its components are significantly associated with IOP, besides the HDL-cholesterol. This association may be used to control IOP by intervening the occurrence of metabolic syndrome.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To investigate the pooled prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR), proliferative DR (PDR) and nonproliferative DR (NPDR) in Asian type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.
METHODS: We performed a systematic search online search using PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and China WeiPu Library to identify eligible studies that reported the prevalence of DR, PDR and NPDR in Asian T2DM patients. Effect size (ES) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to evaluate the prevalence of DR, PDR and NPDR in Asian T2DM patients, respectively.
RESULTS: There were 41 references and 48 995 T2DM patients involved in this study. The prevalence of DR, PDR, and NPDR was 28%, 6%, and 27% in T2DM patients, respectively; while the prevalence of PDR and NPDR in DR patients was 17% and 83%, respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that prevalence of DR in T2DM patients from Singaporean, Indian, South Korean, Malaysian, Asian, and Chinese was 33%, 42%, 16%, 35%, 21% and 25%, respectively. In T2DM patients with NPDR from Indian, South Korean, Malaysian, Asian, Chinese, higher prevalence was found than that in PDR patients (45% vs 17%, 13% vs 3%, 30% vs 5%, 23% vs 2% and 22% vs 3%), as well as in DR patients (74% vs 26%, 81% vs 19%, 86% vs 14%, 92% vs 8% and 85% vs 15%). The prevalence of PDR in T2DM from India was higher than patients from other locations of Asia, and the same results were also observed in NPDR patients.
CONCLUSION: In either T2DM Asian patients or DR patients, NPDR is more common than PDR. Based on our results, we should pay more attention to NPDR screening and management in T2DM patients, and we also recommend suitable interventions to prevent its progression.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To explore the correlation between several blood cell-associated inflammatory indices including mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and the presence and severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR).
METHODS: We searched for eligible studies from PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and CNKI up to December 13, 2017. Standardized mean difference (SMD) calculated with confidence interval (CI) of 95% was used to estimate the values of those indices.
RESULTS: A total of 31 studies were included in the present Meta-analysis. As compared with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients without DR, the values of MPV, PDW, NLR, and PLR were higher in patients with DR (SMD=0.67; 95%CI: 0.36 to 0.98; SMD=0.51; 95%CI: 0.27 to 0.75; SMD=0.77; 95%CI: 0.49 to 1.05 and SMD=1.18; 95%CI: 0.07 to 2.28). Additionally, it was also observed that MPV was closely correlated with the severity of DR.
CONCLUSION: MPV, PDW, NLR, and PLR could be recommended as diagnostic biomarkers for DR, and MPV could be applied to assess the severity of DR.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To systematically review whether the increased fluctuation of intraocular pressure (IOP) is a risk factor for open angle glaucoma (OAG) progression.
METHODS: Scientific studies relevant to IOP fluctuation and glaucoma progression were retrieved from MEDLINE, EMBASE and CENTRAL databases, and were listed as references in this paper. The hazard ratio (HR) was calculated by using fixed or random-effects models according to the heterogeneity of included studies.
RESULTS: Individual data for 2211 eyes of 2637 OAG patients in fourteen prospective studies were included in this Meta-analysis. All studies were longitudinal clinical studies with follow-up period ranging from 3 to 8.5y. The combined HR was 1.23 (95%CI 1.04-1.46, P=0.02) for the association between IOP fluctuation and glaucoma onset or progression with the evidence of heterogeneity (P<0.1). Subgroup analyses with different types of IOP fluctuation were also evaluated. Results indicated that the summary HR was 0.98 (95%CI 0.78-1.24) in short-term IOP fluctuation group, which showed no statistical significance with heterogeneity, whereas, the combined HR was 1.43 (95%CI 1.13-1.82, P=0.003) in long-term IOP fluctuation group without homogeneity. Sensitivity analysis further showed that the pooled HR was 1.10 (95%CI 1.03-1.18, P=0.004) for long-term IOP fluctuation and visual function progression with homogeneity among studies (P=0.3).
CONCLUSION: Long-term IOP fluctuation can be a risk factor for glaucoma progression based on the presented evidence. Thus, controlling the swing of IOP is crucial for glaucoma or glaucoma suspecting patients.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To gain a better understanding of the overall efficacy of valproic acid (VPA) treatment for retinitis pigmentosa (RP).
METHODS: Publications in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Clinicaltrials.gov were searched for clinical trials of patients with RP assigned to treatment with VPA. Patients’ pre- and post-treatment visual field (VF) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) scores were extracted and compared to assess changes.
RESULTS: A total of 78 reports were retrieved and 6 studies involving 116 patients were included in the Meta-analysis. The combined results showed a significant decrease in logarithm of minimal angle of resolution (logMAR) scores, calculated using baseline and post-treatment BCVA (P<0.00001, mean difference=-0.05, 95%CI: -0.05, -0.04, I2=36%) scores, which means there was considerable improvement in visual acuity. Meanwhile, more BCVA changes were observed in short-term (≤6mo) treatment studies (P<0.00001, mean difference=-0.05, 95%CI: -0.05, -0.04, I2=38%), studies conducted in Asia (P<0.00001, mean difference=-0.05, 95%CI: -0.05, -0.04, I2=4%),  studies with a sample size of 30 or fewer patients (P<0.00001, mean difference=-0.05, 95%CI: -0.05, -0.04, I2=38%) and prospective studies (P<0.00001, mean difference=-0.05, 95%CI: -0.05, -0.04, I2=0%). However, VPA’s effect on VF was inconsistent across studies (P=0.75, mean difference=-22.76, 95%CI: -160.56, 115.05, I2=68%).
CONCLUSION: This Meta-analysis reveals that most RP patients who were treated with VPA showed improvement in BCVA. However, its effect on VF remains inconsistent. VPA may be a promising treatment for RP.]]></description>

METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Ei village, IEEE Xplore and Cochrane Library database were searched systematically for literatures about computer aided detection (CAD) in DR detection. The methodological quality of included studies was appraised by the Quality Assessment Tool for Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2). Meta-DiSc was utilized and a random effects model was plotted to summarize data from those included studies. Summary receiver operating characteristic curves were selected to estimate the overall test performance. Subgroup analysis was used to identify the efficiency of CAD in detecting DR, exudates (EXs), microaneurysms (MAs) as well as hemorrhages (HMs), and neovascularizations (NVs). Publication bias was analyzed using STATA.
RESULTS: Fourteen articles were finally included in this Meta-analysis after literature review. Pooled sensitivity and specificity were 90% (95%CI, 85%-94%) and 90% (95%CI, 80%-96%) respectively for CAD in DR detection. With regard to CAD in EXs detecting, pooled sensitivity, specificity were 89% (95%CI, 88%-90%) and 99% (95%CI, 99%-99%) respectively. In aspect of MAs and HMs detection, pooled sensitivity and specificity of CAD were 42% (95%CI, 41%-44%) and 93% (95%CI, 93%-93%) respectively. Besides, pooled sensitivity and specificity were 94% (95%CI, 89%-97%) and 87% (95%CI, 83%-90%) respectively for CAD in NVs detection. No potential publication bias was observed.
CONCLUSION: CAD demonstrates overall high diagnostic accuracy for detecting DR and pathological lesions based on OP. Further prospective clinical trials are needed to prove such effect.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the effect of internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling with indocyanine green (ICG), brilliant blue G (BBG), triamcinolone acetonide (TA), trypan blue (TB), or without dye for the treatment of idiopathic macular hole (IMH).
METHODS: A search was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, and CENTRAL (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials) for related studies published before October 2018.
RESULTS: A total of 29 studies and 2514 eyes were included in this network Meta-analysis. For IMH closure, the rank from the best to the worse treatment was: BBG, TB, TA, ICG, and no dye. There was a significant difference in postoperative IMH closure rate between BBG and no dye. The rank of the best to the worse treatment to improve visual acuity was: BBG, TB, no dye, TA, and ICG. The improvement rate of visual acuity after using BBG was significantly higher than ICG. The improvement rate of visual acuity was more favorable with TB than ICG, TA, and no dye.
CONCLUSION: BBG can contribute to better anatomical and functional outcomes compared to other dyes for ILM peeling in patients with IMH. The results show that the best treatment of ILM peeling with dyes is BBG.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To conduct a Meta-analysis for the change of interleukin-10 (IL-10) concentration in vitreous samples of patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR).
METHODS: Systemic search for literature was conducted from the databases of PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library by August 2019. Statistical analyses including standard mean difference (SMD) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were performed by using RevMan 5.3 software.
RESULTS: Totally 194 studies were screened and finally 11 studies were included in the Meta-analysis. The concentration of IL-10 in the DR group was higher than in the control group (P=0.003, SMD: 0.77, 95%CI: 0.25-1.28). Significant heterogeneity was found among all studies (P<0.00001, I2=92%). The subgroup analysis showed that the concentration of IL-10 increased in vitreous samples from patients with DR compared to the non-DR controls (P=0.004, SMD: 1.44, 95%CI: 0.46-2.42). Moreover, the concentration of IL-10 in samples of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) patients was significantly higher than that of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) patients (P=0.01, SMD: 0.61, 95%CI: 0.13-1.08).
CONCLUSION: The vitreal concentration of IL-10 is significantly increased in patients with DR. Further studies are needed to reveal the mechanisms of IL-10 in DR.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To compare the efficacy and safety between laser therapy and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents intravitreal injection monotherapy in type-1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity (APROP).
METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase for original comparable studies. We included studies that compare laser therapy and intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents monotherapy in ROP regardless of languages and publication types.
RESULTS: Complication incidence was significantly higher in laser therapy group (OR: 0.38; 95%CI: 0.19-0.75; P=0.005). Spherical equivalent (SE) was higher in laser therapy [weighted mean difference (WMD): 2.40, 95%CI: 0.88-3.93; P=0.002]. The time between treatment and retreatment was longer in laser therapy group (WMD: 8.45, 95%CI: 5.35-11.55; P<0.00001). Recurrence incidence (OR: 0.97; 95%CI: 0.45-2.09; P=0.93) and retreatment incidence (OR: 1.24; 95%CI: 0.56-2.73; P=0.59) were similar in two approaches. Subgroup analysis between type-1 ROP and APROP was not significant except SE reported in the included studies (P<0.0001).
CONCLUSION: This Meta-analysis outcome indicates anti-VEGF agents are as effective as laser treatment, and safer than laser in type-1 ROP and APROP. The degree of myopia in APROP is higher than type-1 ROP. More randomized controlled trials in large sample size should be conducted in the future.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To summarize quantitatively the prospective association between physical activity and age-related cataract (ARC) risk.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched for all relevant follow up studies until July 2019. Multivariable-adjusted relative risks (RRs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) from individual studies were used to calculate the overall summary estimates. The dose-response relationship was assessed using generalized least-squares trend estimation.
RESULTS: Six prospective cohort studies, involving 19 173 cases in 6.2-12.1y follow up of 171 620 participants, were included in the analysis. Increased physical activity was significantly associated with reduced risk of ARC by 10% (RR: 0.90; 95%CI: 0.81, 0.99, P=0.04). Stratified analysis by assessment method for physical activity suggest that studies using metabolic equivalent (MET) per day tended to report a slightly stronger association with ARC (RR: 0.85; 95%CI: 0.81, 0.90, P<0.001) than studies which assessed activity by weekly activity (RR: 0.96; 95%CI: 0.89, 1.03, P=0.24). Dose-response analysis indicated that the risk of ARC decreased by 2% (RR: 0.98; 95%CI: 0.98, 0.99, P<0.001) for every 6 METs per day increase in activity.
CONCLUSION: The findings from this Meta-analysis provide additional evidence that increased physical activity is inversely associated with ARC risk dose-responsively.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To conduct a systematic review and Meta-analysis to examine the association between uveitis and psoriatic disease, and to evaluate whether one condition predisposes individuals to the other.
METHODS: We performed a comprehensive search of PubMed and EMBASE to identify cohort studies examining the association between uveitis and psoriatic disease [psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis (PsA)]. We used a random-effects model to calculate the pooled relative risks (RRs) adjusted for confounders, along with the 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
RESULTS: This Meta-analysis included a total of 6 studies and a maximum of 80 178 648 participants. Compared with non-psoriatic controls, uveitis risk was significantly elevated in patients with psoriasis (RR=1.49; 95%CI: 1.08-2.07), and PsA (RR=3.16; 95%CI: 2.16-4.63). Furthermore, pre-existing uveitis was associated with a significantly increased risk of psoriasis (RR=1.62; 95%CI: 1.44-1.83), and PsA (RR=4.44; 95%CI: 3.52-5.60).
CONCLUSION: The results of this systematic review and Meta-analysis suggest an overall positive bidirectional association between uveitis and psoriatic disease (psoriasis and PsA), warranting increased awareness among clinicians involved in the management of these two conditions. Therefore, there remains a need for more detailed studies of the possible common pathogenesis of psoriatic disease and uveitis.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering efficacy and safety of tafluprost 0.0015% eye drops [benzalkonium chloride (BAK) 0.1 mg/mL] compared with that of latanoprost 0.005% eye drops (BAK 0.2 mg/mL) for primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT).
METHODS: All the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) about treating POAG and OHT comparing tafluprost and latanoprost were collected by searching PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI and VIP. The outcomes of interest to evaluate the clinical efficacy and adverse effects included IOP and patient-related drop discomfort.
RESULTS: Five RCTs involving 888 glaucoma patients were included. The results showed that, 1) at the end of the study, no statistically significant differences were observed in IOP reduction [standard mean difference (SMD) =0.48, 95%CI 0.07 to 0.88, P=0.085] between tafluprost and latanoprost; 2) No statistically significant differences were observed in adverse events of foreign-body sensation [relative risk (RR) =0.62, 95%CI 0.26 to 1.46, P=0.269], eye irritation (RR=1.16, 95%CI 0.49 to 2.75, P=0.744), eye pain (RR=2.000, 95%CI 0.949 to 4.216, P=0.07), iris hyper-pigmentation (RR=0.741, 95%CI 0.235 to 2.334, P=0.61), dry eye (RR=1.154, 95%CI 0.409 to 3.256, P=0.79) and eye pruritus (RR=1.600, 95%CI 0.536 to 4.774, P=0.4) between tafluprost and latanoprost. However, tafluprost showed more reported incidence of conjunctival hyperaemia than latanoprost (RR=2.11, 95%CI 1.24 to 3.59, P=0.006).
CONCLUSION: Tafluprost 0.0015% eye drops (BAK 0.1 mg/mL) and latanoprost 0.005% eye drops (BAK 0.2 mg/mL) are comparable in lowering IOP for open angle glaucoma (OAG) and OHT. It does not differ in the incidence of foreign-body sensation, eye irritation, eye pain, iris hyper-pigmentation, dry eye and eye pruritus, but tafluprost shows less ocular tolerability because of more incidence of conjunctival hyperaemia.]]></description>

METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane library databases and Web of Science were searched until August 2018 for clinical trials comparing the above four adjuvants. ORs for postoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) improvement and primary macular hole closure rates were compared between the different adjuvants.
RESULTS: Twenty-seven eligible articles were included. For postoperative BCVA improvement, results of BBG-assisted peeling were significantly more favorable than those of ICG (WMD 0.08, 95% credible interval 0.01-0.16) and TA ranked highest. No significant differences were found between any other two groups in postoperative BCVA improvement. For postoperative primary macular hole closure rates, BBG ranked highest. However, no significant differences were shown between any two groups.
CONCLUSION: TA and BBG are the optimum adjuvants for achieving postoperative BCVA improvement macular hole surgery with adjuvant-assisted ILM peeling. Among all adjuvants, the use of BBG is associated with the highest postoperative macular hole closure rate.]]></description>

METHODS: Eligible studies were retrieved and screened from five main electronic databases. Mean difference (MD) was hired to show the pooled effectiveness of intraocular pressure (IOP) and medication decrease achieved by GATT. In addition, combined surgical success and reoperation rates were calculated, and complications were also summarized.
RESULTS: Ten studies were included for systematic review, but one study was not pooled for Meta-analysis due to the repeated data. The combined IOP decrease after GATT was 9.81 mm Hg (95%CI: 7.98-11.63 mm Hg) which showed significant reduction from the baselines (Z=10.52, P<0.0001). Similarly, the number of medications after GATT also decreased distinctly compared with that of medication before the surgery (Z=9.09, P<0.0001), and the pooled medication decrease was 1.68 (95%CI: 1.31-2.04). In addition, the combined surgical success rate was 85%, while the pooled reoperation rate was 20%. Sight-threatening complications occurred scarcely, whereas the pooled occurrence rate of hyphemia was as high as 36.0%.
CONCLUSION: GATT could effectively lower IOP and decrease medications for patients with OAG. Moreover, the procedure appears to be a safe and promising treatment for OAG due to its minimally-invasive and conjunctiva-sparing nature.]]></description>

METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and CNKI were systematically searched, and all studies involved MH were included. The closure rate of MH and the postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 6mo after the initial surgery were the primary measures. All statistical tests were performed in Review Manager 5.3.
RESULTS: Five studies that included 151 eyes of 151 patients were finally included, all of which were retrospectively comparative studies. Between the pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with ILM peeling surgery and the ILM insertion technique, the latter had significantly better efficacy with respect to the closure rate of MH (OR=21.32, 95%CI=7.25-62.67, P<0.001); However, regarding BCVA at 6mo after the initial surgery in MH, there was no statistical significance between the groups (OR=-0.04, 95%CI=-0.22-0.14, P=0.66). In addition, regarding the rate of retinal reattachment after the initial surgery, the two different methods were not significantly different (OR=2.22, 95%CI=0.34-14.32, P=0.4).
CONCLUSION: Both ILM peeling and ILM insertion technique could significantly improve anatomic outcomes of MH in high myopia with or without retinal detachment (RD), and anatomic outcomes are more effective. However, there is no statistical significance in BCVA at 6mo after the initial surgery in MH, or in the rate of retinal reattachment after the first surgery, between the two methods.]]></description>

<title xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="text"><![CDATA[Current applications of machine learning in the screening and diagnosis of glaucoma: a systematic review and Meta-analysis]]></title>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To compare the effectiveness of two well described machine learning modalities, ocular coherence tomography (OCT) and fundal photography, in terms of diagnostic accuracy in the screening and diagnosis of glaucoma.
METHODS: A systematic search of Embase and PubMed databases was undertaken up to 1st of February 2019. Articles were identified alongside their reference lists and relevant studies were aggregated. A Meta-analysis of diagnostic accuracy in terms of area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC) was performed. For the studies which did not report an AUROC, reported sensitivity and specificity values were combined to create a summary ROC curve which was included in the Meta-analysis.
RESULTS: A total of 23 studies were deemed suitable for inclusion in the Meta-analysis. This included 10 papers from the OCT cohort and 13 from the fundal photos cohort. Random effects Meta-analysis gave a pooled AUROC of 0.957 (95%CI=0.917 to 0.997) for fundal photos and 0.923 (95%CI=0.889 to 0.957) for the OCT cohort. The slightly higher accuracy of fundal photos methods is likely attributable to the much larger database of images used to train the models (59 788 vs 1743).
CONCLUSION: No demonstrable difference is shown between the diagnostic accuracy of the two modalities. The ease of access and lower cost associated with fundal photo acquisition make that the more appealing option in terms of screening on a global scale, however further studies need to be undertaken, owing largely to the poor study quality associated with the fundal photography cohort.]]></description>

<title xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="text"><![CDATA[Association between cystatin C and diabetic retinopathy among type 2 diabetic patients in China: a Meta-analysis]]></title>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To explore the correlation between cystatin C (Cys-C) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in those patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in China.
METHODS: Articles were collected from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, VIP, PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Clinical Trials.gov, and Google Scholar. Quality and risk of bias within included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS). Heterogeneity was determined by using Cochran’s Q-test and Higgins I2 statistics. Mean differences (MDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of Cys-C within the diabetes without retinopathy (DWR) and DR, DWR and non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), NPDR and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) were collected by using random-effects model because of high heterogeneity. Meta-analysis was conducted based on 23 articles of 2331 DR including NPDR and PDR patients and 2023 DWR patients through Review Manager 5.3. Subgroup analyses were also performed according to DM duration, body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol (TC), total triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein C (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein C (HDL-C), sample origins and methods. Publication bias was assessed by the funnel plot.
RESULTS: Cys-C level in DR patients was increased compared with that of DWR (total MD: 0.69, 95%CI: 0.41 to 0.97, Z=4.79, P<0.01). Besides, the synthesized results of the studies showed the similar findings in the DWR vs NPDR group (total MD: 0.29, 95%CI 0.20 to 0.39, Z=6.02, P<0.01) and the NPDR vs PDR group (total MD: 0.63, 95%CI 0.43 to 0.82, Z=6.33, P<0.01). Heterogeneity of most of the subgroup analyses was still obvious (I2?≥?50%, P?<?0.1). Forest plots of different subgroups indicated that there was a slight increase of Cys-C during the period between DWR and DR, DWR and NPDR, NPDR and PDR. Funnel plot showed that there was no significant publication bias.
CONCLUSION: The elevated Cys-C is closely related with DR and probably plays a critical role in its progression.]]></description>

<title xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="text"><![CDATA[Clinical outcomes and complications between FLACS and conventional phacoemulsification cataract surgery: a PRISMA-compliant Meta-analysis of 25 randomized controlled trials]]></title>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To update and investigate the clinical outcomes and complications between femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) and conventional phacoemulsification cataract surgery (CPCS).
METHODS: A Meta-analysis was performed using databases, including Pubmed, Embase, and the Cochrane library. At least one of the clinical outcomes and/or complications data in each included randomized controlled trials (RCT) was reported. The quality of the RCT was assessed with the Cochrane risk assessments tool.
RESULTS: Overall, 25 RCTs including 3781 eyes were included. No statistically significant difference detected between FLACS and CPCS in terms of corrected distant visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected distant visual acuity (UDVA), and central corneal thickness (CCT) at the long-term follow up, although FLACS showed better CDVA at 1wk postoperatively, and less increase in CCT at 1d and 1wk. FLACS had better postoperative endothelial cell count (ECC) at 1 and 4-6wk, while there was no significantly difference between FLACS and CPCS at 1d, 3 and 6mo [weighted mean difference (WMD): 51.54, 95% confidence interval (CI): -5.46 to 108.54, P=0.08; WMD: 48.52, 95%CI: -17.54 to 114.58, P=0.15; WMD: 12.17, 95%CI: -48.61 to 72.94, P=0.69, respectively]. Postoperative endothelial cell loss (ECL) of the FLACS was significantly lower than that of the CPCS at 1, 4-6wk, and 3mo (P=0.02, 0.008, 0.03, respectively). However, there was no significant difference between two groups at 6mo (WMD: -30.36, 95%CI: -78.84 to 18.12, P=0.22). No significant difference was discovered with respect to the macular edema [odds ratio (OR): 0.93, 95%CI: 0.42 to 2.05, P=0.85], capsular complication excluding posterior capsular tears (OR: 0.79, 95%CI: 0.42 to 1.50, P=0.47) and intraocular pressure change (OR: 0.82, 95%CI: 0.39 to 1.72, P=0.60). However, posterior capsular tears were more common in CPCS group (OR: 0.12, 95%CI: 0.01 to 0.98, P=0.05). The effective phacoemulsification times were significantly lower in the FLACS group compared to the CPCS group (WMD: -0.78, 95%CI: -1.23 to -0.34, P=0.0006).
CONCLUSION: No statistically significant difference is discovered between FLACS and CPCS in clinical outcomes at the long-term follow up. However, higher rate of posterior capsular tears is detected in patients receiving CPCS.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravitreal corticoid as an adjunctive therapy to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nvAMD).
METHODS: Four databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and the clinicaltrials.gov were comprehensively searched for studies comparing intravitreal corticoid plus anti-VEGF (IVC/IVA) vs anti-VEGF monotherapy (IVA) in patients with nvAMD. GRADE profiler was used to assess the quality of outcomes. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT) and adverse events including the occurrence of severe elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) and the progress of cataract were extracted from the eligible studies. Review Manager (RevMan) 5.3 was used to analyze the data.
RESULTS: There was no statistic difference of mean change in BCVA at 6 and 12mo between IVC/IVA and IVA group [95% confidence interval (CI): -2.28 to 4.24, P=0.55; 95%CI: -3.01 to 8.70, P=0.34]. No statistic difference was found in the change of CMT between two groups at 6mo time point (95%CI: -17.98 to 16.42, P=0.93) while the CMT reduction in IVC/IVA group was significantly more obvious than IVA group at 12mo time point [mean difference (MD)=-44.08, 95%CI: -80.52 to -7.63, P=0.02]. The risk of occurrence of severe elevation of IOP in the IVC/IVA group was higher than that in the IVA group (95%CI: 1.92 to 9.48; P=0.0004). Cataract progression risk was calculated no statistic difference between two groups (95%CI: 0.74 to 4.66; P=0.18).
CONCLUSION: No visual or anatomical benefits are observed in IVC/IVA group at 6mo. At 12mo, the CMT of the IVC/IVA group is significantly lower than that of the IVA group. Risk of severe elevation of IOP is significantly higher when treated by IVC/IVA.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To systematically understand the genetic association between methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search in Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Citation Index, Foreign Medical Literature Retrieval Service, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang Databases was performed to collect all eligible studies up to August 2019. Study selection, data abstraction and study quality evaluation were performed by two independent investigators. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to assess the association.
RESULTS: Eighteen case-control studies including 2156 cases and 2201 controls were identified. There was no significant difference in the terms of MTHFR C677T polymorphism and POAG in the Caucasian population (for T vs C OR=1.11, 95%CI: 0.88 to 1.39; for TT vs CC OR=1.01, 95%CI: 0.76 to 1.36; for TT+TC vs CC OR=1.15, 95%CI: 0.84 to 1.58 and for TT vs TC+CC OR=1.02, 95%CI: 0.78 to 1.33). However, a significant effect was revealed in the Asian population (for T vs C OR=1.34, 95%CI: 1.12 to 1.59; for TT+TC vs CC OR=1.41, 95%CI: 1.14 to 1.76).
CONCLUSION: Based on 18 eligible studies, we provide a correlation between MTHFR C677T polymorphism and POAG among the Asians subgroup indicating that the T allele or TT +TC genotype may play a critical role in POAG development in Asians.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To compare the outcomes between early surgery and late surgery for intermittent exotropia (IXT) with a Meta-analysis.
METHODS: Scientific databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched prior to December 16, 2019. From this broad database search, we performed some Meta-analysis including eleven independent studies, to further evaluate the outcome(s) when comparing early versus late surgery for IXT. The boundaries between early and late surgery and the surgery methods were not inconsistent, so subgroup analyses were conducted by different boundaries of age at surgery and different surgical approaches. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated according to the random-effects model for high heterogeneity between studies.
RESULTS: Eleven retrospective studies were included in this Meta-analysis. No significant difference between early and late surgery was observed for IXT patients (ORFirst follow-up= 0.88, 95%CI 0.53-1.44, P=0.61; ORFinal follow-up=1.48, 95%CI 0.94-2.31, P=0.09). However, sensitivity analysis performed by sequentially omitting individual studies showed that the final follow-up result was not stable. Subgroup analyses revealed that an earlier surgical procedure could lead to a better outcome in the 4-year boundary subgroup as well as the bilateral lateral rectus recession (BLR) subgroup for the final follow-up (OR4y=2.64, 95%CI 1.57-4.44, P=0.00; ORBLR=2.25, 95%CI 1.36-3.74, P=0.00).
CONCLUSION: Early surgery for IXT provides a better long term follow-up outcome when patients are younger than 4 years old or choose the BLR surgical method.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To verify the association between retinopathy, nephropathy, and periodontitis in type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients.
METHODS: Several electronic databases were available for our comprehensive search including China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese VIP Information (VIP), Wanfang, Web of Science, ScienceDirect and PubMed and were queried for relevant citations (updated to Mar. 2019). RevMan was utilized to perform Meta analysis and publication bias detection. After evaluation of the methodological quality of included studies, a fixed or random effect model was utilized to analyze data from included studies.
RESULTS: A total of eight articles were finally included in this Meta analysis. In all 3987 subjects, there were 1207 T2D patients accompanying with microvascular complications and 1734 patients with periodontitis as well. The Meta forest plot presented little heterogeneity of the eight studies (P<0.00001, I2=89%). The total effect demonstrated periodontitis was associated with overall microvascular complications (OR: 1.96, 95%CI: 1.67-2.30, Z=8.25, P<0.00001). Subgroup investigations among the studies in Asian (OR: 2.33, 95%CI: 1.91-2.85) and North American (OR: 1.42, 95%CI: 1.08-1.86) populations confirmed the existed association between retinopathy, nephropathy, and periodontitis. While the strength of such associations between periodontitis and diabetic microvascular complications were more obvious in the Asians than North Americans. All the results indicated that periodontitis was associated with diabetic retinopathy (OR: 3.77, 95%CI: 2.71-5.24), diabetic nephropathy (OR: 1.55, 95%CI: 1.24-1.94) in T2D patients.
CONCLUSION: The periodontitis is associated with diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy among T2D patients and further large sample size clinical trials are in need to confirm the findings.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of non-penetrating glaucoma surgery (NPGS) plus phacoemulsification (Phaco-NPGS) and NPGS-alone.
METHODS: We systematically searched various databases and reviewed studies that had evaluated the effects of Phaco-NPGS or NPGS-alone for patients with glaucoma. Primary outcomes included postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) and the number of postoperative antiglaucoma medications. Secondary outcomes were the prevalence of complications, incidence of needling or goniopuncture, and surgical success rate.
RESULTS: In total, 380 and 424 eyes in NPGS-alone and Phaco-NPGS groups respectively were included. Both postoperative IOP and number of medications were significantly lowered in the Phaco-NPGS group than that in the NPDS-alone group [weighted mean difference (WMD)=-1.12, 95% confidence interval (CI): -2.11 to -0.12, P=0.03; WMD= -0.31, 95%CI: -0.53 to -0.09, P=0.006]. Moreover, Phaco-NPGS had a significantly lower prevalence of complications and postoperative procedures compared to NPGS-alone, while no significant difference existed for surgical success.
CONCLUSION: Phaco-NPGS superior to NPGS-alone in the reduction of IOP and medications. Phaco-NPGS can be recommended for glaucoma patients with coexisting cataracts owing to its superior efficacy, fewer complications, and postoperative procedures.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To investigate the potential differences between topography-guided (TG) and wavefront-optimized (WFO) laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for the treatment of myopia.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed to determine relevant trials comparing LASIK with TG and WFO from the time of library construction to August 2020, and The PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, EMBASE and Chinese databases (i.e. CNKI, CBM, WAN FANG and VIP) were accessed. The data on visual acuity, refractive status and wavefront aberration were retrieved and evaluated from three to six months after surgery. STATA (version 14.0) software was used for statistical analysis. A cumulative Meta-analysis was simultaneously performed.
RESULTS: Eleven studies with a total of 1425 eyes were incorporated. No statistically significant differences were evident between TG and WFO ablation in the proportion of eyes achieving an uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCVA) of 20/20 or better (P=0.377), gaining one line or more (P=0.05), postoperative cylinder (P=0.40), vertical coma (P=0.593) and horizontal coma (P=0.957). After TG ablation, the proportion of the patients’ eyes of which postoperative refraction is within ±0.5 diopter of the target refraction was significantly higher than that undergoes WFO (P=0.003). As opposed to the WFO group, manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE; P=0.000) was lower, and UCVA (P=0.005) was better in the TG group. The higher-order aberrations (HOAs; P=0.000), spherical aberration (P=0.000) and coma (P=0.000) were significantly lower in TG group. The cumulative Meta-analysis illustrated that the proportion of eyes achieving UCVA of 20/20 or better, postoperative refraction within ±0.5 diopter, and MRSE has steady between the two groups.
CONCLUSION: Both TG-LASIK and WFO-LASIK are safe, effective, and predictable for correcting myopia. TG-LASIK may produce fewer aberration and is more precise than WFO-LASIK.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To compare the efficacy and safety of intravitreal aflibercept with dexamethasone implant in the treatment of macular edema (ME) associated with diabetic retinopathy (DR) or retinal vein occlusion (RVO).METHODS: A comprehensive search of studies comparing dexamethasone and aflibercept in patients with ME was conducted at PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from the beginning of library to April 16, 2021. Extracting the data including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT), number of injections and serious adverse events (SAEs) from the final qualified articles. RevMan 5.3 software was used for Meta-analysis of the included studies.RESULTS: Totally 7 studies with 369 eyes were included. The causes of ME in the final screening study included RVO and DR. Compared with the aflibercept treatment group, the BCVA of the dexamethasone implant treatment group showed no significant difference in the follow-up for 3mo [mean difference (MD): -0.05, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.11, 0.02; P=0.17] and 12mo (MD: -0.01, 95%CI: -0.38, 0.37; P=0.98), but it was slightly worse than the aflibercept group at 6mo (MD: 0.12, 95%CI: 0.03, 0.21; P=0.008). In terms of CRT reduction, there was no significant difference between the two groups at 3mo (MD: -28.14, 95%CI: -79.95, 23.67; P=0.29), 6mo (MD: 27.67, 95%CI: -84.89, 140.24; P=0.63), and 12mo (MD: -59.00, 95%CI: -127.37,9.37; P=0.09). However, dexamethasone implant had fewer injections, but more adverse events such as elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and cataract.CONCLUSION: Intravitreal injection of aflibercept and dexamethasone implant can both effectively increase BCVA and reduce CRT. Compared with aflibercept, dexamethasone implant is not inferior in improving vision and reducing CRT in the initial treatment period (3mo) and long-term treatment period (12mo). Besides, it has fewer injections and more likely to cause elevated IOP and cataract.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To assess the differences in average and sectoral peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in patients with non-arteritic anterior ischemic neuropathy (NAION) compared with those with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).METHODS: A comprehensive literature search of the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases were performed prior to October, 2021. Studies that compared the pRNFL thickness in NAION eyes with that in POAG eyes with matched mean deviation of the visual fields were included. The weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to pool continuous outcomes.RESULTS: Ten cross-sectional studies (11 datasets) comprising a total of 625 eyes (278 NAION eyes, 347 POAG eyes) were included in the qualitative and quantitative analyses. The pooled results demonstrated that the superior pRNFL was significantly thinner in NAION eyes than in POAG eyes (WMD=-6.40, 95%CI: -12.22 to -0.58, P=0.031), whereas the inferior pRNFL was significant thinner in POAG eyes than in NAION eyes (WMD=11.10, 95%CI: 7.06 to 15.14, P≤0.001). No difference was noted concerning the average, nasal, and temporal pRNFL thickness (average: WMD=1.45, 95%CI: -0.75 to 3.66, P=0.196; nasal: WMD= -2.12, 95%CI: -4.43 to 0.19, P=0.072; temporal: WMD= -1.24, 95%CI: -3.96 to 1.47, P=0.370).CONCLUSION: SD-OCT based evaluation of inferior and superior pRNFL thickness can be potentially utilized to differentiate NAION from POAG, and help to understand the different pathophysiological mechanisms between these two diseases. Further longitudinal studies and studies using eight-quadrant or clock-hour classification method are required to validate the obtained findings.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To quantitatively evaluate the risk of anxiety and depression in patients with uveitis via performing a Meta-analysis.METHODS: Three electronic database (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases) were searched for studies recording data about uveitis and anxiety as well as depression simultaneously up to January 2021. The incidence rate and standard mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were calculated to analyse the association using random-effects models based on heterogeneity tests.RESULTS: In total, 12 observational studies containing 874 patients with uveitis were included. The results showed that there was a significant association between uveitis and anxiety (SMD=0.97, 95%CI: 0.39 to 1.54, P=0.0009) and depression (SMD=0.79, 95%CI: 0.51 to 1.07, P<0.00001). The overall morbidities of anxiety and depression in patients with uveitis were 39% and 17%, respectively. With subgroup analysis, the heterogeneity actually came from different kinds of uveitis. Specifically, the incidence rates of both anxiety and depression were relatively low in patients with anterior uveitis (33% and 15%), moderate in patients with infectious uveitis (46% and 22%), and high in patients with unspecified uveitis (59% and 35%).CONCLUSION: It is preliminarily indicated that patients with uveitis may have a high risk of anxiety and depression. Ophthalmologists and psychologists should pay more attention to the psychological state when dealing with patients with uveitis. Further high-quality studies with detailed direct data are needed to draw more precise conclusions.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To conduct a Meta-analysis pooling randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to compare hydrophobic with hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses in terms of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) development.METHODS: Electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were queried from their starting till January 2020. RCTs investigating the impact of hydrophobic versus hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses on PCO were considered eligible in this study. The pooled effect estimates were calculated using the random-effects model.RESULTS: Thirteen RCTs comprising of 939 patients (1263 eyes) were covered in this study. Patients with hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses had a lower PCO score than those with a hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses [standard mean difference: -1.80; 95% confidence interval (CI): -2.62 to -0.98; P&#x003C;0.001]. Moreover, the frequency of neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) capsulotomy in patients with hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses was significantly lower than patients with hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses (relative risk: 0.38; 95%CI: 0.20-0.71; P=0.003).CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses are superior to hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses in patients after cataract surgery due to lower PCO score and reduced Nd:YAG capsulotomy. While similar studies are conducted by other researchers, the present study conducted subgroup analyses that show superior results with hydrophobic lenses in trials conducted in western countries.]]></description>

Studies that were designed pre and post anti-TNF drug treatment, were selected. After determining the search strategy for this study, the relevant data were extracted.RESULTS: The initial search was performed in the target databases and a total of about 1458 articles were found. Fifteen articles were selected for systematic review and only 12 of them had inclusion criteria for Meta-analysis (with visual acuity data). The mean dose of prednisolone before and after biological treatments was reported in 5 studies (28.56 and 7.56 mg/kg, respectively). Also, the preliminary results indicate a significant reduction in visual acuity logMAR levels (MD=-1.5 IU/L, 95%CI: -2.1, -0.01).CONCLUSION: Biological drugs significantly reduce the dose of prednisolone and affect visual acuity values.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the overall endophthalmitis incidence and the effectiveness of potential prophylaxis measures following phacoemulsification cataract surgery (PCS).METHODS: The PubMed and Web of Science databases were searched from inception to April 30th, 2021. We included studies that reported on the incidence of endophthalmitis following PCS. The quality of the included studies was critically evaluated with the Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale. The random effect or the fixed-effects model was used to evaluated the pooled incidence based on the heterogeneity. The publication bias was assessed by Egger's linear regression and Begg's rank correlation tests.RESULTS: A total of 39 studies containing 5 878 114 eyes were included and critically appraised in the Meta-analysis. For overall incidence of endophthalmitis after PCS, the Meta-analysis yielded a pooled estimate of 0.092% (95%CI: 0.083%-0.101%). The incidence appeared to decrease with time (before 2000: 0.097%, 95%CI: 0.060%-0.135%; 2000 to 2010: 0.089%, 95%CI: 0.076%-0.101%; after 2010: 0.063%, 95%CI: 0.050%-0.077%). Compared with typical povidone-iodine solution (0.178%, 95%CI: 0.071%-0.285%) and antibiotics subconjunctival injections (0.047%, 95%CI: 0.001%-0.095%), the use of intracameral antibiotics significantly reduced the incidence of endophthalmitis after PCS (0.045%, 95%CI: 0.034%-0.055%, RR: 7.942, 95%CI: 4.510-13.985).CONCLUSION: Due to the advancement of phacoemulsification technology and the widespread use of intracameral antibiotics, the incidence of endophthalmitis following PCS shows a decreasing trend over time. The use of intracameral antibiotics administration will significantly reduce the risk of endophthalmitis.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To summarize the data of epidemiological studies on cataract prevalence over 50 years old in urban and rural areas of China from 2000 to 2020, and to analyze the prevalence of cataract and operation rate in China.
METHODS: By searching PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Wanfang Data and CNKI, Chinese and English literatures on the prevalence of cataract in China were retrieved, and the relevant characteristic data were extracted. Then, Stata v15SE software was used for Meta-analysis and heterogeneity test. According to the results of heterogeneity, the corresponding effect models were selected to combine the extracted data.
RESULTS: A total of 20 studies were included in this study, with a total of 111 434 cases. Meta-analysis showed heterogeneity. According to the random effect model, the overall prevalence of cataract in Chinese people over 50 years old was 27.45%, that in rural was 28.79%, and that in urban was 26.66%. The overall coverage rate of cataract surgery was 9.19%.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of cataract is high in China, and there is still room for improvement in surgical coverage, so it is very important to promote cataract screening and prevention.]]></description>

Change of spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and axial change (AL) were extracted from the literatures that met the inclusion criteria, and RevMan5.3 software was used for Meta-analysis.RESULTS: A total of 4 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included in this Meta-analysis, involving 770 myopic children. The results showed that PDLs could delay the progression of myopia in children with myopia compared with single vision spectacle lenses (SVLs; WMD=0.21 D, 95%CI: 0.01, 0.41, P=0.04). However, there was no significant difference in controlling the growth of axial length (AL) in myopic children (WMD=-0.10 mm, 95%CI: -0.21, 0.01, P=0.07). The results of the effectiveness of myopia control between the two spectacle lenses showed that PDLs were more effective in controlling the progression of myopia (OR=5.73, 95%CI: 2.58, 12.70, P<0.001) and delaying the growth of AL (OR=44.25, 95%CI: 8.84, 221.58, P<0.001) than SVLs, and the differences were statistically significant.CONCLUSION: PDLs can control the progression of myopia compared with SVLs, but cannot delay the growth of AL, and the effectiveness of PDLs in myopia control better than SVLs.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ultrasound cycloplasty (UCP) for glaucoma.METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases was used to select studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis was performed by Review Manager and StataCorp LLC.RESULTS: A total of 19 articles met the inclusion criteria. Overall, UCP is effective and safe in the glaucoma treatment, the risk ratio (RR) of the success rate was 2.28 (95%CI, 1.82-2.84). After UCP, patients had a significant reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP; mm Hg), the weighted mean difference (WMD) was 11.39 (95%CI, 9.88-12.90). In addition, UCP brings fewer postoperative complications with RR of 0.30 (95%CI, 0.19-0.49). Most of the complications were short-term and mild. Postoperatively, patients’ use of IOP-lowering medications reduced, the standardized mean difference (SMD) was 0.78 (95%CI, 0.40-1.17). However, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA; logMAR) did not have obvious improvement after UCP, the WMD was 0.01 (95%CI, -0.06-0.09). This procedure does provide painfulness relief, with RR of 3.06 (95%CI, 1.95-4.81).CONCLUSION: UCP is effective and safe for suitable glaucoma. It can effectively decrease IOP in glaucoma patients, reduce the patients’ dependence on IOP-lowering medications after surgery, relief the painfulness and has fewer long-term or severe postoperative complications, but the BCVA did not improve much.]]></description>

<title xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="text"><![CDATA[Efficacy and safety of atropine at different concentrations in prevention of myopia progression in Asian children: a systematic review and Meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials]]></title>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To assess the efficacy versus the adverse effects of various concentrations of atropine in the prevention of myopia in Asian children.METHODS: Databases (PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library and Web of science) were comprehensively searched from inception to April 2022. Types of studies included were randomized clinical trials (RCTs). The published languages were limited to English. Two researchers assessed the quality of included studies independently using Cochrane risk of bias tool based on the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. Funnel plots and Egger’s test were used for detection of publication bias. Meta-analyses were conducted using STATA (version 15.0; StataCorp).RESULTS: A total of 15 RCTs involving 2268 patients were included in the study. In the atropine group, spherical equivalent progressed at a significantly lower rate [weighted mean difference (WMD)=0.39, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.23, 0.54] than in the control group. A WMD of 0.15 mm was associated with less axial elongation (95%CI -0.19, -0.10). Different doses showed statistically significant differences (P<0.05) and an improved effect could result from a higher concentration. Changes in photopic pupil size and mesopic pupil size in atropine group is 0.70 mm (95%CI: 0.33, 1.06) and 0.38 mm (95%CI: 0.22, 0.54) more than the control group. In the present Meta-analysis, no changes in accommodative amplitude (AA) were associated with atropine administration. Atropine administration increased the risk of adverse effects by 1.37 times.CONCLUSION: Concentrations of less than 1% atropine are able to effectively retard diopter and axis growth of myopia in Asian children in a dose-dependent manner. Meanwhile, it caused pupil enlargement, but induced no change in the AA within this range. Further study is required to determine the dosage needed to achieve maximum efficacy and minimal side effects.]]></description>

<title xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="text"><![CDATA[Comparison of efficacy of conbercept, aflibercept, and ranibizumab ophthalmic injection in the treatment of macular edema caused by retinal vein occlusion: a Meta-analysis]]></title>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate and compare the anatomical and functional outcomes and negative effects of the three anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs in the treatment of macular edema (ME) due to retinal vein occlusion (RVO) based on the evidence pooled from current clinical trials and observational studies.METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on nine online databases from inception until April 30, 2022. The main endpoints were best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), and adverse events (AEs). Cumulative Meta-analysis was conducted to synthesize the outcomes of the drugs. The retrieved data were analyzed using Stata software (version 12.0).RESULTS: A total of 20 studies comprising 1674 eyes met the inclusion criteria to the Meta-analysis. It was observed that conbercept and aflibercept had better visual acuity effects compared with ranibizumab at 1mo [weight mean difference (WMD)=-0.03, P=0.001; WMD=-0.05, P=0.019], but the effects were not different from that of ranibizumab at 6mo. Moreover, there was not statistically significant difference in the proportion of patients gaining ≥15 letters at 12-24mo between aflibercept and ranibizumab [odds ratio (OR)=1.16, P=0.427]. Conbercept had higher mean CMT change effects at 1mo (WMD= -14.43, P=0.014) and 6mo (WMD=-35.63, P≤0.001) compared with ranibizumab. Meanwhile, the mean CMT change effects at 1mo (WMD=-10.14, P=0.170), 6mo (WMD=-26.98, P=0.140) and 12-24mo (WMD=-12.34, P=0.071) were comparable among the groups. Similarly, AEs were not significantly different among the treatments (OR=0.75, P=0.305; OR=1.04, P=0.89). The stability of effect size of mean BCVA and CMT improved with the increase in sample size. Aflibercept and conbercept required fewer injections compared with ranibizumab.CONCLUSION: This is the first study to evaluate the efficacy and AEs of intravitreal administration of conbercept, ranibizumab, and aflibercept in the treatment of RVO-ME. Intravitreal aflibercept or conbercept results in better mean change in vision and CMT reduction compared with ranibizumab. Conbercept can be considered to be a promising and innovative drug with good anti-VEGF effects.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To evaluate the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) volume and height using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in glaucoma patients.METHODS: Literatures retrieval was carried out through PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Studies that compared the volume and height of LGN in glaucoma patients with that in control subjects were included. The volume and height of LGN were extracted from the included studies. The Review Manager 5.4.1 software was used for the Meta-analysis.RESULTS: This Meta-analysis included 10 cross-sectional studies, including the eyes of 223 glaucoma patients and 185 healthy controls. Compared with the control subjects, the volume and height of LGN in glaucoma patients measured by MRI were significantly reduced {-29.13 mm3, 95% [confidence interval (CI): -44.82 to -13.43, P=0.0003; -0.61 mm, 95%CI: -0.78 to -0.44, P<0.00001, respectively]}. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that the differences of LGN volume and height between glaucoma patients and control subjects in the older group were smaller than that in the younger group, and LGN volume decreased with the increase of glaucoma severity.CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate that the volume and height of LGN are decreased in glaucoma patients, and LGN volume can be considered a parameter of glaucoma severity.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To compare the postoperative efficacy, safety, predictability, and visual quality of implantable collamer lens (ICL) implantation versus small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in myopia eyes.METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and several Chinese databases were searched at May 2021 to select relevant studies in comparison of clinical outcomes between ICL implantation and SMILE for myopia. The primary outcomes were efficacy, safety, and predictability. And the secondary outcomes were postoperative higher-order ocular aberrations (HOAs), modulation transfer function cutoff frequency (MTF), objective scatter index (OSI), contrast sensitivity and a quality of vision (QoV) questionnaire.RESULTS: A total of 1036 eyes from 10 studies, of which 503 eyes underwent ICL implantation and 533 eyes underwent SMILE, were enrolled in this Meta-analysis. Pooled results revealed that ICL group had a better safety index and post-corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) (P=0.007, &#x003C;0.00001, respectively), and a lower percentage of eyes with a postoperative CDVA lost 1 line (P=0.007) than the SMILE group. No significant differences were found in comparison of the other primary outcomes. In the long-term follow-up (&#x003E;6mo), ICL group had a lower total HOA, coma, and spherical aberration than SMILE group (P=0.003, &#x003C;0.00001, 0.04). Yet higher trefoil was found in ICL group at 6mo after surgery (P=0.003). Additionally, ICL group also had a higher MTF value (P=0.02), and a higher contrast sensitivity score for spatial frequencies of 1.5, 6, and 12 cpds (P=0.02, 0.005, 0.02, respectively). And it also had a lower score of bothersome in QoV questionnaire than SMILE group (P=0.003).CONCLUSION: ICL implantation and SMILE have similar and comparable outcomes in term of the efficacy and predictability for correcting high myopia. However, ICL group is relatively safer and also has better visual quality in comparison of SMILE group.]]></description>

<title xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="text"><![CDATA[Choroidal thickness, myopia, and myopia control interventions in children: a Meta-analysis and systemic review]]></title>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To investigate changes of choroidal thickness (ChT) in children with myopia and the effect of current myopia control interventions on ChT.METHODS: Major literature databases were searched for studies relevant to myopia in children. All studies used swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) or enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) to measure the ChT value. The weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were pooled to evaluate ChT in myopia children.RESULTS: A total of 11 eligible articles, including 1693 myopic and 1132 non-myopic eyes, were included in the first Meta-analysis. The sub-foveal choroidal thickness (SFCT; WMD=-40.06, 95%CI, -59.36 to -20.75, P&#x003C;0.001) and ChT at other sectors were significantly thinner in myopic eyes compared with the non-myopic eyes. The Meta-analysis revealed that the ChT decreased horizontally from the temporal sector toward the nasal sector in the pediatric myopia population. Another 11 studies reporting the effect of myopia control interventions were included in the second Meta-analysis for the relationship between myopia control treatments and ChT. SFCT significantly increased after orthokeratology (OK) treatment and OK combined with 0.01% atropine (OKA) treatment (WMD=19.47, 95%CI, 15.96 to 22.98, P&#x003C;0.001; WMD=21.81, 95%CI, 12.92 to 29.70, P&#x003C;0.001, respectively). The forest plots showed that SFCT changed little in myopic children receiving 0.01% atropine (P=0.30). Furthermore, the Meta-analysis showed that OK treatment had a stronger effect on the value of SFCT in myopic children as compared with 0.01% atropine (WMD=9.86; 95%CI, -0.21 to 19.93, P=0.05). There is no difference between the treatment with OK and OKA treatment in ChT in myopic children (P=0.37).CONCLUSION: The ChT in myopic eyes is thinner than that in non-myopic eyes in pediatric population. Myopia control interventions including OK and OKA lead to ChT thickening, but other treatments such as 0.01% atropine did not show an increase in ChT.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[AIM: To assess the efficacy of ketotifen in treating allergic conjunctivitis.METHODS: A systematic search of systematic reviews and Meta-analyses was conducted on the PubMed and Web Science of Science until October 2021 to address this knowledge gap. Mean difference with 95%CI and P values were used to assess the efficacy of ketotifen. The heterogeneity (I2) was used to evaluate the impact of heterogeneity.RESULTS: Eight randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 1589 patients were included in this Meta-analysis. The results revealed that after treating with ketotifen, itching (MD=-0.91, 95%CI: -1.63 to -0.20, I2=94%, P=0.01), tearing (MD=-0.40, 95%CI: -0.61 to -0.18, I2=75%, P=0.0003) and total signs and symptoms (MD=-0.85, 95%CI: -1.12 to -0.58, I2=0, P<0.00001) showed better benefit effect compared to the placebo group.CONCLUSION: Topical ketotifen is an effective treatment for patients with allergic conjunctivitis.]]></description>
