<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Thenatural vitreous body has a fine structure and complex functions. The imitation of the natural vitreous body by vitreous substitutes is a challenging work for both researchers and ophthalmologists. Gases, silicone oil, heavy silicone oil and hydrogels, particularly the former two vitreous substitutes are clinically widely used with certain complications. Those, however, are not real artificial vitreous due to lack of structure and function like the natural vitreous body. This article reviews the situations, challenges, and future directions in the development of vitreous substitutes, particularly the experimental and clinical use of a new artificial foldable capsular vitreous body .]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[Pterygium, a common ocular surface disorder, has a complex pathophysiology that may mimic tumorigenesis. There is altered expression of cell cycle/proliferation-related factors in pterygium tissues. Therefore, similar to cancer treatments, the management of pterygium ought to be multifactorial based on the patient’s condition. Current therapeutic methods for pterygium are focused on surgical resection in conjunction with antimetabolite use, in addition tissue graft is usually performed in the context of the avoidance of bare sclera. However, future directions in the management of pterygia will likely focus on genetic approaches. This perspective views the pathogenesis of pterygium, its existing therapies as well as current and future challenges in its treatment.]]></description>

<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[As a contagious bacterial infection that affects the conjunctival covering of the eye, the cornea and the eyelids, trachoma is controlled by an endorsed integrated strategy consisting of surgery for trichiasis, antibiotic therapy, facial cleanliness and environmental improvement, namely, the SAFE strategy developed by World Health Organization. Developed based on evidence from previous field trials and constantly modified in practice, SAFE strategy has greatly boosted the progress in trachoma control. Regardless of the fact that there are still many pending questions, national program coordinators are convinced that trachoma control initiative based on SAFE strategy would be effective.]]></description>
