Abstract:AIM:To analyze the effect of conbercept treatment on different types of macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion(RVO-ME)using optical coherence tomography(OCT)images.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who first received conbercept injections for RVO-ME at Yijishan Hospital of Wannan Medical College from December 1, 2017, to March 31, 2022. Data on disease duration, age, hypertension, OCT images, central macular thickness(CMT), and best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA)were collected before and at 4-6 wk after treatment. Patients were divided into 4 groups according to different types of macular edema: cystoid macular edema(CME), sponge-like diffuse retinal thickening(SDRT), serous retinal detachment(SRD), and mixed type(FULL). Changes in CMT and visual acuity before and after treatment were compared among the groups to analyze differences in the effect of conbercept treatment on different ME types, and the effect of baseline CMT and visual acuity on post-treatment visual acuity.
RESULTS: Totally 139 patients(139 eyes)were classified as having macular edema, including 62 males(44.6%)and 77 females(55.4%), with a mean age of 58.9±10.9 years, and they were divided into 4 groups based on different types of macular edema, including 54 cases(54 eyes)(mean age 59.6±11.1 years)in the CME group, 23 cases(23 eyes; mean age 56.6±10.2 years)in the SDRT group, 22 cases(22 eyes; mean age 57.8±12.0 years)in the SDR group, and 40 cases(40 eyes; mean age 60.0±10.7 years)in the FULL group. There were no significant differences in the duration of disease or age between groups(P>0.05). There was a significant difference in preoperative CMT between groups(P=0.01, one-way ANOVA), with the CMT in the FULL group being significantly greater than that in the SDRT group(P=0.03). There were no significant differences in pre-treatment visual acuity between the four groups(P=0.26). After conbercept treatment, the macular central recess thickness was reduced and visual acuity was improved in all four groups, among which the CMT in the CME and FULL groups was reduced significantly compared with the other two groups(P<0.05), and the visual acuity in the CME and SRD groups was improved significantly compared with the other two groups(P<0.05). Postoperative visual acuity was negatively correlated with preoperative CMT(P=0.044)and positively correlated with preoperative visual acuity(P<0.01).
CONCLUSION:The efficacy of intravitreal conbercept in the treatment of RVO and macular edema may be related to the type of edema observed on OCT images, in which the efficacy is best in patients with CME but poor in patients with SDRT.

Abstract:AIM: To investigate the changes of retinal vascular parameters and retinal layer thickness in patients with multiple sclerosis(MS).
METHODS: This single-centered case-control study was performed on a MS group of 42 patients diagnosed with MS and a control group of 43 healthy hospital staff matched in terms of age and sex at Iran University, department of neurology and ophthalmology from March 2020 to March 2021. The ophthalmic parameters of each patient were recorded, and optical coherence tomography was used to evaluate the retinal thickness in the layers.
RESULTS: This study enrolled a total of 85 participants, with a mean age of 40.44±11.52 years, including 61 females(72%). The control group consisted of 43 individuals with a mean age of 39.49±11.07 years, while the MS group comprised 42 participants with a mean age of 41.40±12.01 years. The mean disease duration in the MS group was 8.45±6.04 a. The thickness of the ganglion cell layer in the right eye was significantly lower in the MS group compared to the control group(P=0.034). In addition, except for the left nasal sector(P=0.106), the mean peripapillary neurofibrillation in all examined sectors were significantly lower in the MS group than in the control group(P<0.05). The average vessel density in both the deep and superficial capillary plexuses across all regions of both eyes was lower in the MS group than in the control group, with all comparisons for the superficial capillary plexus showing statistical significance(P<0.05 for all except the left nasal sector).
CONCLUSION: The thickness of the retina of patients with MS is significantly reduced. Therefore, optical coherence tomography results can be used as a reliable tool to evaluate disease progression and prognosis in MS patients.

Abstract:AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of 3% diquafosol sodium eye drops in children wearing orthokeratology lenses and with dry eye disease(DED)or at risk of DED.
METHODS: Randomized controlled trials. Children with DED or at risk of DED were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either 3% diquafosol sodium eye drops 6 times daily or a blank control at Chongqing Aier Children's Eye Hospital from November 2023 to November 2024. The primary endpoint was the change in the Dry Eye Questionnaire-5(DEQ-5)score from baseline at 12 wk. Secondary assessments included non-invasive breakup time(NIBUT), tear meniscus height, Schirmer's test, corneal fluorescein staining score, and axial length.
RESULTS: A total of 80 participants(80 eyes)were enrolled(40 in each group), the average age of the participants was 11.11±1.88 years, with 43 females(54%)and 37 males(46%), and all completed the trial. After 12 wk, the DEQ-5 scores for the diquafosol sodium group and the blank control group were 1.88±2.02 and 2.88±2.79, respectively(P=0.079). The diquafosol sodium group demonstrated a significant improvement in DEQ-5 dryness symptom scores(-0.33±0.66 vs. 0.05±0.81, P=0.023)and NIBUT(6.18±3.73 vs. -1.09±4.40 s, P<0.001)at 12 wk. Additionally, the diquafosol sodium group showed no axial length elongation, in contrast to the blank control group, which exhibited elongation(0.00±0.08 vs. 0.05±0.10 mm, P=0.013). No other significant differences were found in the secondary endpoints. No adverse events occurred during the trial.
CONCLUSION: Although no statistically significant improvements were noted in the overall DEQ-5 scores, the 3% diquafosol sodium eye drops significantly improved dryness symptoms and NIBUT when compared to the blank control group.

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the effect of fibroblast growth factor 21(FGF21)on high glucose-induced oxidative stress in retinal pigment epithelial(RPE)cells and to clarify the underlying molecular mechanisms.
METHODS:Single-cell sequencing data from the GEO database were analyzed to determine the expression profile of the FGF21 receptor FGFR1 in RPE cells. Human ARPE-19 cells were cultured and randomly assigned to control, high glucose(30 mmol/L), and high glucose+FGF21 analog treatment groups, with additional siFGFR1 and PI3K inhibitor groups. Cell viability in different treatment groups was assessed using CCK-8 assay, intracellular reactive oxygen species(ROS)levels were quantified using DCFH-DA fluorescent probing combined with immunofluorescence staining and flow cytometry. Transcriptome sequencing was performed on cells from the high glucose group and high glucose+FGF21 group to analyze the enrichment level of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Western blotting was performed to detect phosphorylation levels of PI3K/Akt pathway components.
RESULTS:Single-cell sequencing revealed specific expression of FGFR1 in RPE cells of retinal tissues from diabetic model mice. Under In vitro experiments, high glucose(30 mmol/L)exposure reduced ARPE-19 cell viability by 49.7% and increased ROS levels by approximately 2-fold. Whereas treatment with the FGF21 analog(60 ng/mL)restored cell viability and attenuated high glucose-induced ROS accumulation. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that FGFR1 knockdown inhibited the antioxidative stress of FGF21. Further validation of the molecular mechanism revealed that high glucose significantly suppressed the PI3K/Akt pathway activation(the levels of p-Akt and p-PI3K were decreased by 33.9% and 36.6%, respectively), while FGF21 effectively reversed this inhibitory effect and restored the expression of p-Akt and p-PI3K. Treatment with the PI3K inhibitor LY294002 inhibited the cytoprotective effect of FGF21 and significantly increased the ROS-positive cells, these findings confirm that PI3K/Akt signaling is indispensable downstream mechanism for FGF21 to exert its effects.
CONCLUSION:FGF21 alleviates high glucose-induced oxidative stress and cellular injury in RPE cells by activating the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway through its receptor FGFR1.

Abstract:AIM: To explore the effect of dihydroquercetin on visual function in mice with form deprivation myopia based on the NOD-like receptor thermoprotein domain-related protein 3(NLRP3)inflammasome pathway.
METHODS: The C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into control group and form deprivation myopia model group, and the form deprivation myopia model group was constructed by covering the right eye with a translucent eye patch. After successful modeling, the mice in the model group of form deprivation myopia were randomly divided into model group, low-, medium- and high-dose dihydroquercetin groups, and high-dose dihydroquercetin + NLRP3 agonist group. The diopter and axial length of mice in each group were detected. The kit was used to detect the levels of superoxide dismutase(SOD)and malondialdehyde(MDA)in retinal tissue. RT-qPCR was used to detect the mRNA expressions of NLRP3, apoptosis-associated spot-like protein(ASC), Caspase-1, IL-1β and IL-18 in retinal tissues. Western blot was used to detect the expression of NLRP3, ASC, cleaved Caspase-1, IL-1β and IL-18 proteins in retinal tissues. TUNEL staining was used to detect apoptosis in retinal tissue.
RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the diopter of the mice in the model group decreased, and axial length increased, and the SOD decreased whereas MDA, NLRP3, ASC, Caspase-1, IL-1β, IL-18 increased, and the rate of apoptosis in retinal tissue increased(all P<0.05). Compared with the model group, the diopter of mice in the low-, medium- and high-dose dihydroquercetin groups increased, axial length shortened, the SOD increased, whereas MDA, NLRP3, ASC, Caspase-1, IL-1β, IL-18 decreased, and the rate of apoptosis in retinal tissue decreased(all P<0.05). Compared with the high-dose dihydroquercetin group, the high-dose dihydroquercetin+NLRP3 agonist group had reduced diopter, increased axial length, decreased SOD levels, elevated MDA, NLRP3, ASC, Caspase-1, IL-1β, and IL-18 levels, as well as increased apoptosis rate in retinal tissue(all P<0.05).
CONCLUSION: Dihydroquercetin can improve visual function in mice with form deprivation myopia by inhibiting pyroptosis and oxidative stress responses, which may be related to the suppression of NLRP3 inflammasome. NLRP3 agonists can partially mitigate the effects of high-dose dihydroquercetin on form deprivation myopia in mice.

Abstract:AIM: To investigate expression differences and mechanism of action of serine/threonine kinase 1(AKT1), ATP synthase F1 subunit(ATP5F1), and Bcl-2-associated anti-apoptotic gene 3(BAG3)in the occurrence and progression of pterygium.
METHODS:Pterygium-related gene expression data were retrieved from GEO database to screen differentially expressed genes(DEGs). String and Cytoscape were used to construct protein-protein interaction(PPI)networks and identify core targets. GO/KEGG enrichment analyzed mitochondrial metabolic pathways. The pterygium samples(head/body)were collected; pathological features were evaluated by HE staining, and the expression of AKT1, ATP5F1, and BAG3 was detected via immunohistochemistry(IHC).
RESULTS:A total of 1 264 DEGs were identified(585 upregulated, 679 downregulated). GO analysis showed significant enrichment of mitochondrial pathways regarding to biological processes, cell components and molecular functions; KEGG analysis highlighted oxidative phosphorylation and chemical carcinogenesis-reactive oxygen species(ROS)pathways. The head and body pterygium samples were collected from 28 cases(28 eyes)that received pterygium surgery, including 7 males(7 eyes)and 21 females(21 eyes), with a mean age of 69.32±8.98 years. HE staining showed more severe dysplasia, disordered stroma, and inflammation in the pterygium head versus the body. IHC detection confirmed significantly lower AKT1, ATP5F1, and BAG3 expression in the head compared with the body(all P<0.05).
CONCLUSION:GEO-based bioinformatics and experiments confirmed that AKT1/ATP5F1/BAG3(mitochondrial genes)had significant differential expression in pterygium, correlating with pathological progression. They may regulate mitochondrial metabolism to mediate pterygium progression, offering new insights for targeted therapy.

Abstract:AIM: To compare the clinical efficacy of goniosynechialysis versus trabeculectomy combined with cataract phacoemulsification in treating glaucoma complicated with cataract.
METHODS:From January 2019 to January 2024, patients with glaucoma complicated with cataract diagnosed in our hospital were included as the study subjects. They were assigned into trabeculectomy group and goniosynechialysis group based on different surgical methods. The trabeculectomy group was treated with cataract phacoemulsification combined with trabeculectomy, while the goniosynechialysis group was treated with cataract phacoemulsification combined with goniosynechialysis. The improvement of visual acuity, anterior chamber depth, chamber angle width, intraocular pressure, whole en face vessel density within the optic disc head and in the peripapillary region, and complications were compared between two groups.
RESULTS: A total of 120 patients(120 eyes)with glaucoma combined with cataract were included in this study, among which 60 eyes were in the trabeculectomy group and 60 eyes in the goniosynechialysis group. The age of the trabeculectomy group was 60.72±6.16 years, including 28 males and 32 females. The age of the goniosynechialysis group was 61.04±6.24 years, including 31 males and 29 females. At 3 mo after surgery, the visual acuity of patients in both groups improved significantly, and the improvement of visual acuity in the goniosynechialysis group was significantly better than that in the trabeculectomy group(all P<0.01). At 3 mo after surgery, the anterior chamber depth and chamber angle width of patients in both groups were higher than those before surgery, and with the goniosynechialysis group being higher than the trabeculectomy group(all P<0.01), while the intraocular pressure was lower than that before surgery, and with the goniosynechialysis group being lower than the trabeculectomy group(all P<0.01). Before surgery, there was no significant difference in the whole en face vessel density within the optic disc head between the two groups(P>0.05), however, the whole en face vessel density within the optic disc head in both groups on 1 d after surgery were significantly lower than before surgery(all P<0.05); and compared with 1 d after surgery, there was a significant increase at 1 wk, 1, and 3 mo after surgery(all P<0.05); the whole en face vessel density within the optic disc head in the goniosynechialysis group was significantly higher than that in the trabeculectomy group at various time points after surgery(all P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the whole en face vessel density in the peripapillary region between the two groups before surgery and various time points after surgery(all P>0.05). Within 3 mo after surgery, the incidence of complications in the goniosynechialysis group(8.3%)was significantly lower than that in the trabeculectomy group(21.7%; P<0.05).
CONCLUSION:Goniosynechialysis combined with phacoemulsification is more effective than trabeculectomy combined with phacoemulsification in the treatment of patients with glaucoma complicated with cataract in improving the visual acuity and whole en face vessel density within the optic disc head of patients, increasing the anterior chamber depth and chamber angle width, reducing intraocular pressure and the risk of complications. It has high safety and ideal short-term efficacy.

Abstract:Mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes(MAMs)are crucial structural links between the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, formed by a complex protein network. They play a central role in cellular calcium signaling homeostasis, mitochondrial stability, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and inflammatory response. In recent years, advances in subcellular ultrastructure research techniques have gradually uncovered the relationship between MAMs dysfunction and blinding ocular diseases. Studies indicate that structural or functional impairments in MAMs can disrupt retinal pigment epithelial cells homeostasis, compromise the survival microenvironment of retinal ganglion cells, and trigger corneal endothelial cells apoptosis, thereby contributing to the pathogenesis of various blinding ocular diseases including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy, and glaucoma. This article reviews the molecular mechanisms linking MAMs in common blinding ocular diseases.

Abstract:Glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, remains a central focus of ophthalmic research, particularly with regard to surgical management. Conventional procedures, such as trabeculectomy with mitomycin and glaucoma drainage device implantation, continue to be considered the gold standard because of their strong intraocular pressure lowering efficacy. However, these operations are associated with relatively high rates of postoperative complications, and perioperative fluctuations in intraocular parameters can introduce refractive prediction errors that ultimately compromise visual quality. In recent years, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery(MIGS)has gained increasing attention for its advantages in reducing complications, shortening operative time, minimizing incision size, and accelerating visual recovery, while better preserving postoperative refractive stability. This review systematically summarizes the differences in refractive outcomes between conventional surgery and MIGS, examines the underlying mechanisms, and discusses practical clinical strategies to manage refractive shifts. The aim is to provide a theoretical foundation for precise refractive management in glaucoma surgery, thereby enhancing patients' visual quality and overall quality of life.

Abstract:Diabetic macular edema(DME)may occur at any stage of diabetic retinopathy(DR)and represents a significant cause of visual impairment in patients with DR. The pathogenesis of DME is complex, involving numerous risk factors. Recent studies have increasingly revealed that the occurrence and development of DME represents an intertwined pathophysiological process involving metabolic disorders, disruption of the blood-retinal barrier, amplified inflammatory responses, hemodynamic alterations, and the formation of hypoxic microenvironments. Multiple risk factors, including hyperglycaemia, dyslipidaemia, and genetic factors, synergistically drive this process. Risk factors and pathogenesis are a dynamic, interactive relationship in the progression of disease. Comprehensive management of risk factors such as blood glucose and blood lipids, along with multi-target interventions on core pathogenic mechanisms—such as combined anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)and anti-inflammatory treatments, exploration of gene therapy and regulation of metabolic pathways—are expected to become key strategies for delaying the progression of DME.

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is the most prevalent microvascular complication associated with diabetes mellitus(DM). Its pathological mechanisms encompass various factors, including microvascular lesions, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolic memory effects. Nevertheless, current clinical practices in the diagnosis and treatment encounter significant challenges, particularly regarding early detection and the limited efficacy of therapeutic interventions. Recently, RNA methylation modifications, particularly N6-methyladenosine(m6A), have emerged as a central mechanism in the epigenetic regulation of the transcriptome, playing a crucial role in the pathophysiological processes underlying DR. The regulation of m6A modification is a synergistic process involving methyltransferases(such as METTL3), demethylases(such as FTO and ALKBH5), and binding proteins(such as the YTHDF family), which collectively influence RNA metabolism and participate in various pathological processes. Additionally, m6A interacts within a complex cooperative regulatory network alongside non-coding RNAs(including miRNA, lncRNA, and circRNA), significantly contributing to the key pathological mechanisms of DR. This article systematically reviews the existing literature, with the objective of constructing a regulatory network map for DR centered on RNA methylation. This review not only enhances the understanding of the pathogenesis of DR but also provides a theoretical foundation for developing novel diagnostic markers and targeted treatment strategies based on m6A.

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is one of the most common and serious microvascular complications of diabetes, posing a significant threat to patients' visual health. In recent years, epigenetic mechanisms have garnered increasing attention in the scientific community for their pivotal role in the onset and progression of DR. This paper systematically examines the regulatory roles of epigenetic mechanisms in DR, covering key pathways such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, chromatin remodeling, and non-coding RNAs. Under hyperglycemic conditions in diabetes, these epigenetic mechanisms modulate gene expression, thereby influencing critical pathological processes such as oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, mitochondrial dysfunction, and metabolic memory. This article reviews recent advances in epigenetic regulation in DR, providing an in-depth analysis of its underlying molecular mechanisms and complex regulatory networks, and explores the potential of epigenetic markers as diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Additionally, this article highlights emerging therapeutic strategies targeting epigenetic modifications, aiming to provide a theoretical foundation and research direction for the early diagnosis and precision treatment of this disease.

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy(DR), the most common microvascular complication of diabetes, has become a leading cause of visual impairment and blindness across all age groups. The early diagnosis and severity assessment of DR rely on the precise evaluation of retinal microvascular alterations. The periarterial capillary-free zone(paCFZ), a physiological avascular region surrounding retinal arteries, has recently been recognized as an important biomarker reflecting the status of retinal microcirculation. Advances in optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)have enabled noninvasive, high-resolution quantification of the paCFZ, offering a novel approach for the early detection and stratification of DR. This review systematically summarizes the definition and developmental mechanism of the paCFZ, as well as its morphological characteristics across different stages of DR, with a particular focus on the advantages of OCTA in visualizing and quantifying the paCFZ. We further discuss the differential manifestations of the paCFZ in nonproliferative DR and proliferative DR, and its associations with retinal ischemia and oxygenation status. In addition, the potential clinical value of paCFZ in evaluating responses to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)therapy and predicting disease progression is summarized. Finally, the challenges in clinical translation and future research directions are addressed, aiming to provide theoretical support and new perspectives for early screening, risk stratification, and personalized management of DR.

Abstract:Central nervous system adaptation represents a core compensatory mechanism whereby the nervous system dynamically adjusts structure and function to counteract pathological damages, relying on the synergistic effects of multi-level neural plasticity. Amblyopia training may enhance cortical function through dichoptic augmented reality and visual attention exercises, cognitive training and neuroimmunomodulation may facilitate multifocal intraocular lens adaptation after cataract surgery, transcranial alternating current stimulation may improve visual fields in glaucoma, and perceptual learning may optimize eccentric fixation in age-related macular degeneration rehabilitation. These therapeutic approaches may shift the focus of managements from traditional structural repair to neural functional remodeling in ophthalmic diseases, which will open a new way for enhancing patients' visual function and quality of vision. This review aims to systematically review the mechanisms underlying central nervous system adaptability, its current applications in ocular disease rehabilitation and future prospects.

Abstract:Myopia has become a significant eye health problem, which is thought to result from the complex interactions of genetic and environmental factors. This review focuses on two types of hereditary retinal diseases caused by mutations in photoreceptor genes, including rod-cone cell dystrophy(retinitis pigmentosa)and cone dysfunction syndromes(achromatopsia, blue cone monochromatism and Bornholm eye disease). It systematically explores the intrinsic connection between these diseases and the myopia phenotype, and elaborates on the core mechanisms by which pathogenic genes such as RPGR and OPN1LW/OPN1MW, which cause defects in ciliary structure and protein transport and interfere with the visual signal pathway, jointly induce choroidal thinning and scleral remodeling, ultimately driving the elongation of axial length and the occurrence of myopia. By tracing the association of photoreceptor gene mutations with myopia, this article provides a new perspective for in-depth understanding of the genetic mechanism of myopia and is of great significance for the development of early risk warning and targeted intervention strategies.

Abstract:N-glycosylation is a crucial posttranslational modification of proteins that can modulate their functions and plays key roles in various biological processes. Current research has revealed that alterations in protein N-glycosylation are closely associated with the pathogenesis and progression of multiple ocular diseases. N-glycosylation detection methods can identify changes in N-glycans on proteins; therefore, understanding these techniques and their application value in ocular diseases is important. This article provides a systematic review of the current state of N-glycosylation detection methods, including techniques such as capillary electrophoresis, liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. It also offers a detailed discussion on the specific applications of these technologies in the study of various ocular diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and vernal keratoconjunctivitis/atopic keratoconjunctivitis.

Abstract:With the rapid advancement of modern medicine, clinical observations indicate a growing trend of ischemic ocular disease with an increasingly younger age of onset. This condition remains a prominent and challenging focus in ophthalmic clinical practice. Treatment approaches focused solely on ophthalmic interventions yield less than satisfactory clinical outcomes. Some ischemic ocular disease patients concurrently suffer from obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS). These patients show rapid Ischemic ocular disease progression, difficulty in stabilizing blood pressure, and increased susceptibility to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events during ophthalmic treatment. This review primarily examines the correlation between ischemic ocular disease and OSAHS, the pathophysiological changes in ischemic ocular disease patients and the risk factors in OSAHS patients. It aims to provide a theoretical basis for clinical management and disease prevention in this patient population.

Abstract:Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy(TAO)is a common autoimmune complication in thyroid diseases. Its pathogenesis is complex and involves the abnormal activation of multiple signaling pathways. With the rapid development of molecular biology and genomics technologies, the signal transduction mechanisms and regulatory networks related to TAO have been deeply analyzed. At present, studies have found that the interaction between the TSH receptor(TSHR)and the insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor(IGF-1R)signaling pathway, as well as immune inflammation-related pathways, oxidative stress, and calcium signaling pathways, play important roles in the pathogenesis of TAO. In addition, the research on the regulatory mechanism of non-coding RNA and fibrosis-related signaling molecules has gradually become the focus. Despite much advancement, there are still many unsolved mysteries regarding the exact pathogenesis of TAO. This article aims to systematically review the latest research progress of the main signaling pathways of TAO. By combining the latest achievements in gene expression profiles, single-cell sequencing and drug design, it analyzes potential therapeutic targets and the development directions of innovative drugs, providing a theoretical basis for the pathological mechanism of TAO and a scientific basis for the optimization of clinical treatment strategies at the same time.

Abstract:Vision is the primary perceptual mode through which humans and higher animals acquire external information. Visual perception encompasses various aspects of visual processing and has been widely applied in ophthalmic clinical practice. Based on the principle of neural plasticity, visual perception training relies on the visual signal processing mechanism. After receiving external visual signals, the retina transmits them via the optic nerve to the brain, where the cerebral cortex decodes, extracts, and processes the information. By stimulating specific visual information, visual perception training activates visual processing pathways, strengthens synaptic connections among neurons within these pathways, and ultimately enhances the cerebral cortex's ability to integrate and process information, thereby improving patients' visual function and experience. This article explores the application of visual perception training in conditions such as amblyopia, myopia, presbyopia, strabismus, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and optic pathway lesions, discussing its value in improving visual function. It provides theoretical references for the intervention and treatment of related diseases. Visual perception training has been widely applied in various ophthalmic diseases with confirmed clinical efficacy, and it may play a broader role in neurologically related systemic diseases, demonstrating certain clinical application value.

Abstract:High myopia(HM)is one of the leading causes of irreversible visual impairment, characterized by pathological changes such as axial elongation and multidimensional abnormalities in fundus biometric parameters. This review systematically summarizes the dynamic characteristics of fundus biometric parameters(including those of the retina, optic disc, macula, and choroid)in HM patients, as visualized via multimodal imaging techniques \〖e.g., optical coherence tomography(OCT)and optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)\〗, and their association with HM progression and related complications. The article further highlights the strategies and advantages of multimodal imaging integration and discusses recent advances and challenges in combining artificial intelligence(AI)with these imaging modalities to automate fundus parameter analysis, lesion detection, risk stratification, and clinical decision-making for HM. This review aims to provide an evidence-based foundation for the early warning, precise intervention, and personalized management of HM, thereby facilitating a clinical paradigm shift from “reactive treatment” to “active health management”.

Abstract:AIM: To investigate variation patterns of corneal biomechanical parameters and binocular symmetry among children of different genders aged 8-16 years.
METHODS:A retrospective study was conducted, and children who underwent optometric examinations at the ophthalmology department of our hospital were enrolled between January 2022 and December 2024. Measurements included the flat keratometry(K1), steep keratometry(K2), and mean curvature(Km)of the anterior corneal surface, horizontal visible iris diameter(HVID), central corneal thickness(CCT), corneal endothelial cell density(CECD), average cell size(ACS), coefficient of variation(CV), and hexagonality(HEX). Corneal parameters and binocular differences were compared between genders and across age groups.
RESULTS:A total of 621 children(1 242 eyes)were enrolled in this study, including 284 males(568 eyes), 337 females(674 eyes), 528 children aged 8-12 years(1 056 eyes), and 93 children aged 13-16 years(186 eyes). In children aged 8-16 years, the K1, K2, Km and CV of both eyes, as well as the interocular CCT differences in boys were significantly lower than those in girls(all P<0.05), while the HVID and HEX of both eyes, as well as the CCT of the left eye in boys were significantly higher than those in girls(all P<0.05). Children aged 8-12 years had significantly higher K1, Km, CECD and HEX in both eyes, and significantly lower ACS in both eyes than those aged 13-16 years(all P<0.05). K1, K2, Km, CECD and HEX in both eyes were negatively correlated with age(P<0.05); ACS in both eyes was positively correlated with age(P<0.001); K1 and Km of the right eye were positively correlated with the CECD of the right eye(P<0.05), and K1 and CCT of the left eye were positively correlated with the CECD of the left eye(P<0.05).
CONCLUSION:Significant gender differences exist in corneal parameters among children aged 8 to 16 years, while binocular symmetry remained stable.

Abstract:AIM: To explore the impacts of wearing orthokeratology lenses on the ocular surface and meibomian gland of children and adolescents in high-altitude areas.
METHODS: Retrospective study. Myopic children and adolescents who visited at the ophthalmology department and received orthokeratology lens from June 2023 to December 2023 were selected as orthokeratology group, and those who visited and wore regular spectacle group during the same period were selected as regular spectacle group. Then the ocular surface disease index(OSDI)score, tear meniscus height, non-invasive breakup time(NIBUT)\〖first NIBUT(fNIBUT), average NIBUT(avNIBUT)\〗, and meibomian gland score were compared between the two groups before wearing lenses, and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 mo after wearing lenses.
RESULTS: A total of 80 children(160 eyes)with myopia were included in this study. Among them, 40 cases(80 eyes)were in the orthokeratology lens group, with 25 males and 15 females and an average age of 11.33±2.76 years old, and 40 cases(80 eyes)were in the regular spectacle group, with 23 males and 17 females and an average age of 11.58±2.94 years old. The OSDI scores and tear meniscus heights showed no clear difference between two groups at various time points before and after wearing glasses(all P>0.05). The fNIBUT and avNIBUT of the orthokeratology lens group decreased compared with the regular spectacle group at 6 and 12 mo after wearing lenses, and meibomian gland score of the orthokeratology group was higher than that of the regular spectacle group at 12 mo after wearing lenses(all P<0.001). Among them, the fNIBUT and avNIBUT of the orthokeratology lenses group at 3, 6, and 12 mo after wearing glasses were lower than those before wearing glasses(all P<0.05). Moreover, the meibomian gland scores of the orthokeratology lenses group at 12 mo after wearing glasses were higher than those before wearing glasses, and 1, 3, and 6 mo after wearing glasses(all P<0.05), while there was no statistical difference in fNIBUT, avNIBUT, and meibomian gland score at each time point in the regular spectacle group(all P>0.05).
CONCLUSION: Long term wearing of orthokeratology lenses can shorten the NIBUT of myopic children and adolescents in high-altitude areas, and have a certain impact on their meibomian gland function.

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the predictive value of aqueous humor stromal cell-derived factor-1(SDF-1)and epithelial neutrophil-activating peptide-78(ENA78)for visual impairment following vitrectomy in patients with diabetic retinopathy(DR).
METHODS: Patients with DR who underwent vitrectomy in the ophthalmology department of our hospital from March 2022 to March 2024 were enrolled as study group. According to the results of uncorrected visual acuity examination during the 1-year follow-up after surgery, they were further divided into visual impairment group and good visual acuity group. In addition, patients with cataracts who were treated in our hospital during the same period were recruited as control group. The levels of SDF-1 and ENA78 in aqueous humor were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). Pearson correlation analysis was used to evaluate the correlation of indicators. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the influencing factors of postoperative visual impairment in DR patients. Relative risk analysis was conducted to assess the impact of different aqueous humor SDF-1 and ENA78 levels on postoperative visual impairment in DR patients. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve analysis was applied to determine the predictive value of aqueous humor SDF-1 and ENA78 levels for postoperative visual impairment in DR patients.
RESULTS: Totally 156 cases(156 eyes)were enrolled in the study group, including 87 males and 69 females, with a mean age of 60.65±8.91 years old; and 91 cases(91 eyes)were enrolled in the control group, including 53 males and 38 females, with a mean age of 58.72±8.43 years old. The levels of SDF-1 and ENA78 in aqueous humor of the study group were significantly higher than those of the control group(P<0.001). According to the results of uncorrected visual acuity during the 1-year follow-up after surgery, the study group was further divided into the visual impairment group(n=49)and the good visual acuity group(n=107), including 28 males and 21 females in the visual impairment group, with a mean age of 63.73±7.41 years, and 59 males and 48 females in the good visual acuity group, with a mean age of 59.24±8.47 years. The age and glycated hemoglobin(HbA1c)levels of the visual impairment group were higher than those of the good visual acuity group(all P<0.05). Compared with the good visual acuity group, the levels of SDF-1 and ENA78 in aqueous humor of the visual impairment group were significantly elevated(all P<0.05). A positive correlation was found in the study group between the levels of SDF-1, ENA78 in aqueous humor and HbA1c(r=0.314, 0.362, all P<0.05). Elevated levels of aqueous humor SDF-1(OR=2.936, 95% CI: 1.628-5.296)and ENA78(OR=3.092, 95% CI: 1.738-5.502)were identified as risk factors for postoperative visual impairment in DR patients(all P<0.05). High levels of SDF-1 and ENA78 increased the risk of postoperative visual impairment by 1.958-fold and 2.030-fold compared with the low-level groups, respectively; the area under the curve(AUC)of combined detection of aqueous humor SDF-1 and ENA78 for predicting postoperative visual impairment in DR patients was 0.936, which was superior to the predictive value of SDF-1 or ENA78 alone(Zcombination-SDF-1=2.850, Zcombination-ENA78=2.445, all P<0.05).
CONCLUSION: Elevated levels of aqueous humor SDF-1 and ENA78 are risk factors for postoperative visual impairment in DR patients, and the combined detection of SDF-1 and ENA78 has high clinical application value for predicting postoperative visual impairment in DR patients.

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the associations of triglyceride glucose(TyG)index, triglyceride glucose-body mass index(TyG-BMI), and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR)with diabetic retinopathy(DR), and to evaluate their diagnostic value.
METHODS: This study was a single-center retrospective study. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)who were hospitalized in the endocrinology department of 3201 Hospital from January 1, 2023 to March 1, 2025 were included. According to the diagnostic criteria for DR, participants were classified into DR group and non-DR(NDR)group. Then the association of TyG index, TyG-BMI, and HOMA-IR index with DR of the two groups of patients were alalyzed.
RESULTS:A total of 969 patients with T2DM were enrolled in this study, including 816 patients in the DR group. Among DR group, 271 were males(33.2%)and 545 were females(66.8%), with a mean age of 56.78±11.88 years. The NDR group consisted of 153 patients, including 41 males(26.8%)and 112 females(73.2%), with a mean age of 59.40±10.52 years. Statistically significant differences were observed between the DR group and the NDR group in terms of age, BMI, TyG index, TyG-BMI, HOMA-IR index, fasting blood glucose(FBG), 2-h postprandial blood glucose(2 hPBG), fasting insulin(FINS), 2-h postprandial insulin(2 hPINS), fasting C-peptide(FCP), 2-h postprandial C-peptide(2 hPCP), total cholesterol(CHO), triglyceride(TG), low-density lipoprotein(LDL-C), blood urea nitrogen(BUN), uric acid(UA), direct bilirubin(DBIL), glycated hemoglobin(HbA1c), milligrams per total protein(M-TP), microalbuminuria(MALB), urinary albumin to creatinine ratio(UACR), 24-hour urine protein, white blood cell(WBC), neutrophil(N), and platelets(PLT; all P<0.05), while no significant differences were found in the remaining indicators(all P>0.05). In multivariable Logistic regression, both TyG index(aOR=198.65, 95% CI: 66.73-591.41, P<0.001)and TyG-BMI(aOR=1.03, 95% CI: 1.02-1.04, P<0.001)remained independently positive associated with DR. Quartile analysis indicated a progressive increase in DR risk with ascending quartiles of TyG index and TyG-BMI(all Ptrend<0.001). In contrast, HOMA-IR was not significantly associated with DR. Restricted cubic spline analysis, fully adjusted for confounders, showed a nonlinear upward trend in DR risk with increasing TyG index(Pnonlinearity<0.001), whereas TyG-BMI exhibited a U-shaped association(Pnonlinearity<0.05). No significant association was found between HOMA-IR and DR after propensity score matching. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve demonstrated area under curve(AUC)values of 0.870(95% CI: 0.839-0.901)for TyG index, 0.710(95% CI: 0.665-0.755)for TyG-BMI, and 0.657(95% CI: 0.608-0.706)for HOMA-IR.
CONCLUSION:The TyG index and TyG-BMI are risk factors for DR. A dose-dependent increase in DR risk was associated with elevated TyG index values. TyG-BMI exhibited an inverted U-shaped relationship with DR risk. The TyG index had better diagnostic efficiency for DR compared to both TyG-BMI and HOMA-IR index.

Abstract:AIM: To compare the efficacy and safety of posterior scleral, peripupillary, and intravitreal injections of triamcinolone acetonide(TA)in treating retinal vein occlusion-macular edema(RVO-ME).
METHODS: From June 2021 to September 2024, patients with RVO-ME admitted to our hospital were assigned to three groups: group A(posterior scleral injection), group B(peripupillary injection), and group C(intravitreal injection). At 3 mo after treatment, the efficacy, best corrected visual acuity(BCVA LogMAR), central macular thickness(CMT), central retinal artery blood flow parameters, and incidence of complications were compared among the three groups of patients.
RESULTS: A total of 93 cases(93 eyes)of RVO-ME were included, with 31 cases(31 eyes)in each group. The mean age in the group A was 50.37±5.71 years old, with 15 males and 16 females, the group B was 48.92±5.36 years old, with 14 males and 17 females, and the group C was 49.66±5.54 years old, with 18 males and 13 females. The overall efficacy rate in the group A(94%)was higher than that in the groups B and C(68% and 74%), and the complication rate(6%)was lower than in the groups B and C(29% and 32%; P<0.05). At 1 and 3 mo after treatment, the BCVA of group A was 0.46±0.06, 0.36±0.04, the end diastolic velocity(EDV)was 11.45±1.79, 13.97±2.28 cm/s, and the peak systolic velocity(PSV)was 2.16±0.31, 2.83±0.42 cm/s; the BCVA of group B was 0.55±0.07, 0.46±0.05, EDV was 9.57±1.38, 12.03±2.14 cm/s, and PSV was 1.93±0.26, 2.41±0.39 cm/s. The BCVA of group C was 0.57±0.09, 0.48±0.06, EDV was 9.39±1.25, 11.91±2.06 cm/s, PSV was 1.87±0.24, 2.35±0.36 cm/s. The BCVA in the group A was better than that of the groups B and C, and EDV and PSV in the group A were greater than those of the groups B and C(all P<0.05); at 1 and 3 mo after treatment, the CMT of patients in the group A was 249.62±29.33 and 141.13±21.59 μm, and resistance index(RI)was 0.71±0.08 and 0.70±0.08, patients in the group B had CMT of 307.13±34.86 and 227.99±28.43 μm, and RI of 0.77±0.09 and 0.76±0.09, while patients in the group C had CMT of 311.42±40.66 and 232.56±31.44 μm, and RI of 0.79±0.11 and 0.78±0.10, with CMT and RI significantly lower in the group A than those in the groups B and C(all P<0.05).
CONCLUSION: All three methods improved visual acuity, reduced macular edema, and optimized retinal blood flow parameters. However, posterior scleral injection demonstrated the most significant improvement across all efficacy metrics. In contrast, although peripupillary injection and intravitreal injection demonstrated therapeutic effects, their improvements were relatively limited, and both had a higher incidence of complications. Therefore, posterior scleral injection may represent a superior treatment for RVO-ME.

Abstract:AIM: To investigate the diagnostic and prognostic value of differential expression of Cyclin D1 and p53 in eyelid tumors.
METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled patients who underwent surgical resection for eyelid tumors at our hospital between March 2018 and March 2023. Participants were categorized into benign and malignant groups based on tumor characteristics. Clinical data were collected. Genetic data for eyelid tumors were obtained from the GEO database, and differential gene analysis, including volcano plot visualization and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis, was performed using the Sangerbox 3.0 platform. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression levels of Cyclin D1, p53, and BAX in tissue samples. Correlations with clinical features were analyzed using Spearman analysis, and prognostic factors were identified via Logistic regression analysis.
RESULTS: This study included 69 patients with eyelid tumors(78 eyes), categorized into a benign group(37 patients, 41 eyes)and a malignant group(32 patients, 37 eyes)based on tumor characteristics. There were significant differences between the two groups in histological subtype, TNM staging, vascular invasion, differentiation status, and local infiltration(all P<0.05). Among benign tumors: pigmented nevi in 11 eyes(27%), hemangiomas in 9 eyes(22%), squamous cell papillomas in 5 eyes(12%), epidermoid cysts in 5 eyes(12%), seborrheic keratoses in 4 eyes(10%), neurofibromas in 3 eyes(7%), and both calcifying epithelioma and xanthelasma in 2 eyes each(5%); among malignant tumors: basal cell carcinoma in 18 eyes(49%), meibomian gland carcinoma in 8 eyes(22%), squamous cell carcinoma in 5 eyes(14%), sebaceous gland carcinoma in 4 eyes(11%), lymphoma and malignant melanoma each in 1 eye(3%). At the follow-up cutoff date of March 2025, the 2-year survival rate in the benign group(95%)was significantly higher than that in the malignant group(78%; P<0.05). Bioinformatics analysis identified 4 103 differentially expressed genes, including Cyclin D1, p53, and BAX, which were predominantly involved in pathways such as the p53 signaling pathway and calcium-related signaling. Spearman analysis revealed that local invasion(rs=0.71, P<0.05)and TNM stage(rs=0.73, P<0.05)correlated with Cyclin D1 expression; local invasion(rs=0.76, P<0.05)and histological subtype(rs=0.65, P<0.05)correlated with p53 expression. Logistic regression results indicated that Cyclin D1, p53, TNM staging, and local invasion were prognostic risk factors. ROC curve analysis demonstrated that the combined detection of these four indicators had the highest predictive value for prognosis(AUC=0.83).
CONCLUSION: High expression of cyclin D1 and p53 serves as molecular markers for distinguishing benign from malignant eyelid tumors and assessing prognosis. Combined detection of these markers with TNM staging and local invasion demonstrates high predictive value for prognosis.

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the current status and influencing factors of knowledge-attitude-practice in myopia prevention and control among children and adolescents in Ningbo City, thereby providing a scientific basis for formulating targeted prevention strategies.
METHODS: Children and adolescents aged 6-12 years old were selected from the medical-school collaborative myopia prevention network in Ningbo City between August 2024 and May 2025 using stratified cluster sampling. Information on myopia prevention knowledge(15 items)and practice(9 items)was collected through questionnaire surveys. Logistic regression models were used to analyze factors influencing myopia occurrence in children and adolescents.
RESULTS: A total of 664 children and adolescents aged 6-12 years were enrolled in this study. Participants were divided by age into three groups: 6-7 years old(n=221), 8-9 years old(n=221), and 10-12 years old(n=222). Of the 664 questionnaires distributed, 637 valid questionnaires were returned(201 from the 6-7 age group, 235 from the 8-9 age group, and 201 from the 10-12 age group), yielding an effective response rate of 95.9%. Based on myopia screening results, the non-myopic group comprised 203 participants(31.9%), including 100 males and 103 females, with a mean age of 8.82±1.98 years old. The myopic group comprised 434 participants(68.1%), including 213 males and 221 females, with a mean age of 9.10±1.95 years old. The myopia prevalence rates in the 6-7, 8-9, and 10-12 age groups were 37.8%(76/201), 71.9%(169/235), and 94.0%(189/201), respectively(P<0.001). Regarding the knowledge and practice of myopia prevention, the overall awareness rate in the non-myopic group(59.7%±9.7%)was significantly higher than that in the myopic group(48.7%±8.5%; P<0.001). Additionally, the non-myopic group scored higher on the key practice of “regular eye examinations”(4.27±0.96)compared to the myopic group(4.10±1.05; P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis indicated that age was the primary risk factor for myopia occurrence.
CONCLUSION: Age is the dominant factor in the onset of myopia, and there is a phenomenon of “knowledge-practice gap”; the traditional health education model has limitations, and a precise prevention and control system based on developmental patterns should be established.

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the predictive value of central corneal thickness(CCT)and coefficient of variation(CV)of endothelial cell area for secondary glaucoma in patients with uveitis.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on uveitis patients admitted to our hospital from July 2023 to April 2025. Based on the occurrence of secondary glaucoma, patients were divided into an occurrence group and a non-occurrence group, and the clinical data of the two groups were compared. Univariate and multivariate Logistic regression analyses were performed to screen for factors affecting poor prognosis. The predictive value of CCT and CV for secondary glaucoma in patients with uveitis was analyzed using receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves.
RESULTS: A total of 100 uveitis patients(100 eyes)were included and categorized into an occurrence group(16 cases, 16 eyes)and a non-occurrence group(84 cases, 84 eyes), there were 9 males and 7 females in the occurrence group, with a mean age of 45.25±10.32 years, and there were 40 males and 44 females in the non-occurence group, with a mean age of 43.89±12.47 years. The CCT in the occurrence group was significantly lower than that in the non-occurrence group, while the CV was significantly higher than that in the non-occurrence group(both P<0.001). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that CCT was a protective factor, and CV was a risk factor for secondary glaucoma in patients with uveitis(both P<0.01). The areas under the ROC curve(AUC)for CCT and CV in predicting secondary glaucoma were 0.794 and 0.792, respectively. The combined predictive model yielded an AUC of 0.888, with a sensitivity of 98.15% and a specificity of 67.74%, demonstrating good predictive efficacy.
CONCLUSION: CCT and CV have certain clinical value in predicting secondary glaucoma in uveitis patients. The combined diagnostic approach demonstrates higher efficacy and serves as an auxiliary indicator for assessing the risk of secondary glaucoma in patients with uveitis, allowing for targeted clinical prevention and treatment measures.

Abstract:AIM: To evaluate the surgical outcomes and changes in the ocular surface microenvironment following radiofrequency minimally invasive treatment for conjunctivochalasis-induced epiphora.
METHODS: Patients with epiphora primarily caused by conjunctivochalasis were enrolled. All patients had conjunctivochalasis of ≥grade II, and their symptoms showed no significant improvement after previous pharmacological treatment. All patients underwent radiofrequency minimally invasive correction of conjunctivochalasis, supplemented with artificial tears, anti-inflammatory therapy, and ocular surface repair treatment postoperatively. At 8 wk post-surgery, the ocular surface disease index(OSDI), eye redness, tear secretion, non-invasive tear break-up time, lipid layer thickness, tear ferning test, and conjunctival impression cytology were assessed to compare treatment efficacy and observe changes in the ocular surface microenvironment.
RESULTS: A total of 43 cases(43 eyes)of conjunctivochalasis and with a main complaint of epiphora were included, including 23 males and 20 males, with a mean age of 64.69±3.36 years. The total effective rate of surgery was 91% at 8 wk postoperatively. Compared with preoperative values, the OSDI scores significantly decreased and the non-invasive tear break-up time was prolonged at 8 wk post-surgery(all P<0.05). No statistically significant differences were observed in lipid layer thickness or tear secretion at 8 wk postoperatively(all P>0.05). The normal rate of chloramphenicol taste test increased from 21% preoperatively to 63% postoperatively; the normal rate of eye redness increased from 40% to 70%; normal rate of tear ferning grading improved from 30% to 63%; and normal conjunctival impression cytology grading increased from 21% to 74%.
CONCLUSION: Radiofrequency minimally invasive treatment is effective for conjunctivochalasis and is straightforward to perform. Patients with conjunctivochalasis often present with other ocular surface issues beyond conjunctivochalasis itself, such as insufficient tear secretion, reduced lipid layer thickness, and other dry eye-related problems. Therefore, a comprehensive approach emphasizing tear dynamics should be adopted during treatment.

Abstract:AIM: To investigate the clinical efficacy of seamless corneal limbal stem cell transplantation combined with bandage soft contact lens in the treatment of pterygium.
METHODS: A retrospective collection was conducted on patients with pterygium admitted to the hospital from January 2020 to January 2025. They were divided into two groups according to different treatment methods. Group A received seamless corneal limbal stem cell transplantation surgery combined with bandage soft contact lens, while group B received simple seamless corneal limbal stem cell transplantation surgery. The complete repair and healing of corneal epithelium, ocular comfort and corneal refractive status at different time points after surgery were compared between the two groups, and the occurrence of postoperative complications in the two groups was recorded.
RESULTS: This study included 120 cases(120 eyes)of patients with pterygium, including 60 cases(60 eyes)in the group A and 60 cases(60 eyes)in the group B. Group A had an age of 51.88±5.22 years, with 33 males and 27 females. Group B had an age of 52.48±6.00 years, with 30 males and 30 females. The complete repair and healing rate of corneal epithelium in the group A was higher than that in the group B at 1 and 2 wk after surgery(all P<0.05). At 1 and 2 wk after surgery, the scores of the eye comfort assessment table in both groups decreased compared to the day of surgery, and the group A was lower than the group B at all time points(all P<0.05). At 1 and 3 mo after surgery, the surface asymmetry index(SAI), corneal astigmatism(CA), and corneal surface regularity index(SRI)of the corneal topography in both groups decreased compared to preoperative values, and the group A was lower than the group B at all time points(all P<0.05). The incidence of postoperative complications in the group A was slightly lower than that in the group B, but the difference was not statistically significant(all P>0.05).
CONCLUSION: The seamless corneal limbal stem cell transplantation surgery combined with bandage soft contact lens treatment can promote postoperative corneal epithelial healing in patients with pterygium, increase short-term eye comfort after surgery, improve short-term corneal refractive status after surgery, and reduce the occurrence of postoperative complications to a certain extent.

Abstract:AIM: To analyze the factors influencing total corneal surgically induced astigmatism(SIA)following implantable collamer lens(ICL)implantation.
METHODS:This prospective study enrolled 162 patients(162 eyes)who underwent ICL implantation at our hospital between July 2023 and January 2024. Based on preoperative assessment of anticipated postoperative residual astigmatism, different incisions were selected. Superior incision was selected for patients with expected residual astigmatism with the rule in 75 eyes, and temporal incision was selected for patients with expected residual astigmatism againist the rule in 87 eyes. Parameters including total corneal refractive power, incision length, internal ostium-to-visual axis distance, central corneal thickness, preoperative total corneal astigmatism, and corneal diameter were measured using the Pentacam anterior segment analyzer before and at 3 mo after surgery. Postoperative total corneal SIA was calculated based on the changes in total corneal refractive power. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to assess the influence of the above parameters on postoperative total corneal SIA.
RESULTS:A total of 162 cases(162 eyes)that implanted with ICL were included in the analysis, and 8 cases were lost to follow-up, with a loss rate of 4.9%. Eventually 154 cases(154 eyes)completed the research. The superior incision group comprised 72 cases(72 eyes), including 17 males and 55 females, with a mean age of 25.96±6.17 years, while the temporal incision group comprised 82 cases(82 eyes), including 20 males and 62 females, with a mean age of 27.79±6.47 years. No significant difference in postoperative total corneal SIA was observed between the two groups \〖0.31(0.21, 0.49)D vs. 0.27(0.13, 0.485)D, P=0.159\〗. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that internal ostium-to-visual axis distance and preoperative total corneal astigmatism significantly influenced postoperative total corneal SIA in the superior incision group(P=0.001). The regression equation was: postoperative total corneal SIA=0.71-0.381×internal ostium-to-visual axis distance+0.16×preoperative total corneal astigmatism. No significant influencing factors for postoperative total corneal SIA were identified in the temporal incision group.
CONCLUSION: During ICL implantation, the magnitude of total corneal SIA is comparable between superior and temporal incisions. For patients receiving a superior incision, the internal ostium-to-visual axis distance and preoperative total corneal astigmatism value can be used to quantitatively predict postoperative total corneal SIA to a certain extent, thereby aiding in the optimization of postoperative visual quality.

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the visual development of children under 6 years old in Wuhan, and provide evidence-based support for the formulation and optimization of regional policies for children's eye health care.
METHODS:Suresight refractive screener was applied to rapid refractive status examination in 4 989 preschool children under 6 years old in Wuhan City, with results determined according to the manufacturer's age-specific referral criteria. All screened pre-school children completed vision screening and comprehensive ophthalmic examination.
RESULTS: A total of 4 989 children under 6 years old were screened out, including 2 641 males and 2 348 females. They were divided into 6 groups according to age: 426 aged from 6-month to 1-year-old, 903 aged >1 to 2 years old, 1 078 aged >2 to 3 years old, 442 aged >3 to 4 years old, 808 aged >4 to 5 years old, and 1 332 aged >5 to 6 years old. The abnormal rate in the 6-month to 1-year-old group was 44.60%, in the >1 to 2 years old group was 26.02%, in the >2 to 3 years old group was 15.58%, in the >3 to 4 years old group was 10.86%, in the >4 to 5 years old group was 21.91%, in the >5 to 6 years old group was 23.27%, and the total refractive abnormal rate for children aged 6 mo to 6 years old was 22.61%. The refractive abnormal rate generally showed a decreasing trend with increasing age(P<0.001); the refractive abnormal rate in boys aged 6-month to 6 years old was 12.33%, and in girls was 10.28%, with no statistically significant difference in the abnormal rate between boys and girls(P>0.05); among children aged 6-month to 6 years old, the abnormal rate of single-eye myopia was 0.98%, of single-eye hyperopia was 5.41%, of single-eye astigmatism was 9.92%, of binocular myopia was 0.98%, of binocular hyperopia was 2.79%, and of binocular astigmatism was 8.14%; the prevalence of astigmatism in children aged 6-month to 1-year-old was 40.38%, in those aged >1 to 2 years old was 19.82%, in those aged >2 to 3 years old was 12.34%, in those aged >3 to 4 years old was 9.05%, in those aged >4 to 5 years old was 18.81%, and in those aged >5 to 6 years old was 16.89%; the prevalence of astigmatism in children aged 6-month to 6 years old was 18.06%. The abnormal rate of astigmatism in the four age groups ranging from 6-month to 4 years old decreased continuously with age(P<0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in the abnormal rate of astigmatism between the >4 to 5 years old group and the >5 to 6 years old group(P>0.05).
CONCLUSION:Refractive error has become a common eye disease among preschool children. Through early vision screening, establishing a systematic refractive management file, and early intervention, the best treatment period can be seized to avoid missing it and causing adverse consequences.
